Who is Missy Elliott?

Missy Elliott is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. She was born Melissa Arnette Elliott on July 1, 1971, and is also known by the alias Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott. Missy Elliott is her more common name. She began her career in music in the early to middle 1990s as a member of the R&B girl group Sista. Later, she became a member of the Swing Mob collective along with her childhood friend and longtime collaborator Timbaland. Together, they worked on projects for American R&B acts Aaliyah, 702, Total, and SWV.

Timbaland is one of her longest-standing collaborators. She began her solo career in 1997 with the release of her debut album, Supa Dupa Fly, which produced the top 20 single “Sock It 2 Me.” Prior to this, she had participated in a number of collaborations and guest appearances. The album started off on the Billboard 200 chart at position number three, which was the highest charting debut for a female rapper at the time.

Da Real World, Elliott’s second album, was released in 1999 and featured the singles “She’s a Bitch,” “All n My Grill,” and “Hot Boyz,” which all peaked in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the issue dated January 15, 2000, the remix of the latter song established a new record for the most weeks spent at number one on the US R&B chart. Additionally, the remix spent 18 weeks at number one on the Hot Rap Singles chart between the months of December 1999 and March 2000.

Elliott launched his international career with the albums Miss E… So Addictive (2001), Under Construction (2002), and This Is Not a Test (2003). These albums spawned a string of hits for Elliott, including “Get Ur Freak On,” “One Minute Man,” “4 My People,” “Gossip Folks,” and “Work It.” The latter performance was recognized by the Grammys as the best female rap solo performance of the year.  In 2019, she came out with her first extended play, which was titled Iconology.  Melissa Arnette Elliott came into the world on July 1, 1971, at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, which is located in Portsmouth, Virginia.

She is the only child of her mother Patricia Elliott, who worked as a dispatcher for a power company, and her father Ronnie Elliott, who served in the United States Marine Corps in the past. Elliott was raised in a family that was very involved in their local church choir, so singing was a natural part of her childhood. She had the ambition to become a performer when she was only four years old, and her biographer Veronica A.

Davis writes that she “would sing and perform for her family.” Because she was the class jokester all through school, she worried that no one would ever take her seriously in later years.  During the time that her father served on active duty in the Marine Corps, the family made their home in a manufactured home community in Jacksonville, North Carolina. During this period of her life, Elliott reached her full potential.

Even though she was not particularly interested in the academic material, she found that she enjoyed her time at school because of the friends she made there. She would later receive marks on intelligence tests that were well above the average, and she would be promoted two years ahead of the class she had previously been in.  Her promotion to the next grade caused her to become socially isolated, so she purposefully underperformed and was eventually moved back to the class she had been in before.  After her father finished his service in the Marines, the family moved back to Virginia, where they continued to struggle financially due to their financial situation.

In 1991, Elliott joined forces with her close friends La’Shawn Shellman, Chonita Coleman, and Radiah Scott to launch an all-female R&B band initially dubbed Fayze, which would later be rebranded as Sista.  She enlisted her childhood friend Timothy Mosley, better known as Timbaland, to serve as the band’s producer and immediately began recording demo tracks, among which was the 1991 promotional single “First Move.”

Later that same year, in 1991, Fayze caught the attention of Jodeci member and producer DeVante Swing.  by singing a cappella renditions of Jodeci songs for him backstage following one of his group’s performances. Within a short period of time, Fayze relocated to New York City, signed a recording contract with Elektra Records via DeVante’s Swing Mob imprint, and renamed the band Sista. ”

Brand New” was the title of the first single released by Sista, which came out in the year 1993. Elliott brought along Mosley, who DeVante had renamed Timbaland, as well as their mutual friend Melvin “Magoo” Barcliff. In 2008, Elliott expressed her desire to have children, but she admitted that she was terrified of becoming a mother. She said, “I am not sure if I will be able to withstand that level of pain.

In the year 2020, perhaps it will be possible to simply pop a baby out and everything will be fine. At this point in time, however, I’d rather just adopt.” Elliott and her father have a sporadic conversation here and there, but she insists that she has not forgiven him for the way he treated her mother. Graves’ disease, a form of hyperthyroidism, was the cause of Elliott’s absence from the music industry, as she explained it to People magazine in June 2011.
