Who is Mischa Barton?
Mischa Anne Marsden Barton is a British-American actress who has worked in film, television, and stage productions. She was born on January 24, 1986. She began her career on the stage, performing in Tony Kushner’s Slavs! and James Lapine’s Twelve Dreams at the Lincoln Center in New York City. She took the lead role in both of these productions. She first appeared on screen in a cameo role in an episode of the American soap opera All My Children (1996), and she also provided the voice of a character in the Nickelodeon cartoon series KaBlam! (1996–97). Lawn Dogs (1997), a drama also starring Sam Rockwell, was the film in which she made her debut in a leading role for the first time.
She had roles in several critically acclaimed films, including the 1999 romantic comedy Notting Hill and the 1999 psychological thriller The Sixth Sense, both directed by M. Night Shyamalan (1999). In addition, she had a role in the independent crime drama Pups (1999). Barton was born in the Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in Hammersmith, London, to an Irish mother, Nuala Quinn-Barton, a producer, and an English father, Paul Marsden Barton, a foreign exchange broker from Manchester. Barton’s mother, Nuala Quinn-Barton, was a producer. Her paternal grandfather taught Irish at Queen’s University in Belfast, and he was a renowned scholar in the field.
She has two sisters, Zoe, who is her older sister, and Hania, who is her younger sister. Zoe is a barrister in London. Barton has stated that she went to St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith for a short period of time but due to her father’s work, the family moved to New York City when Barton was only five years old. She completed the process to become a naturalized citizen of the United States in 2006 but she has kept her citizenship in the United Kingdom.
Additionally, as a result of her mother, she is eligible to apply for Irish citizenship. Barton received her diploma from the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan in 2004. In June and July 2006, she attended a summer short course at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London called Acting Shakespeare at Sir Richard Attenborough’s urging, after he directed her in Closing the Ring. The course was called Acting Shakespeare. At the age of eight, Barton made his acting debut in the Off-Broadway premiere of the Tony Kushner play Slavs!, which was produced in 1994.
Barton’s performance was deemed “so fine” and “chillingly authoritative” by Vincent Canby of The New York Times. She was lauded by New York magazine as “a darling little girl, [that] exhibits consummate charm,” according to the publication. She made her debut in a number of other Off-Broadway productions before landing the lead role in James Lapine’s Twelve Dreams at Lincoln Center, which she performed alongside Marisa Tomei. Canby continued to sing Barton’s praises, this time remarking that she “has a sweet gravity as the doomed Emma.”
In the year 1996, Barton appeared as a supporting character in Catherine Butterfield’s Where the Truth Lies, which made its debut at the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York. The New York Times made the additional observation that “the winning child actresses Brittany Boyd and Mischa Barton are already intelligent enough not to overplay the naivete and precocity of their respective characters.” In the year 1997, she made an appearance in One Flea Spare by Naomi Wallace at The Public Theater. She shared the stage with Dianne Wiest. The play ultimately received the Obie Award for Best Performance in a New York Production.
Lawn Dogs was her first film role, and it was a critical and commercial success, earning her accolades at film festivals all over the world. Critical acclaim was bestowed upon Barton for her portrayal, with Janet Maslin of The New York Times praising her “poised” performance and Empire praising her “hypnotic central performance.” The following year, 1999, Barton was seen in the films Notting Hill and The Sixth Sense (1999). Both movies received positive reviews and did well at the box office, bringing in a total of $363,889,700 and $672,806,292 respectively.
In addition, she starred alongside Burt Reynolds in the film Pups, which was described as “Dog Day Afternoon for the MTV generation”. Film critic Roger Ebert hailed their work in the movie as “two of the most natural and freed performances I have seen by actors of any age.” She had a role in the film Assassination of a High School President (2008), which was the first film to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. The film also starred Bruce Willis. The “captivating” performance that Barton gave was praised by The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition, she had a role in the horror movie Walled In, which was distributed exclusively on DVD in the month of March 2009. Her performance was lauded, with IGN describing it as “terrific,” despite the fact that the film as a whole was met with a range of reactions from critics. Homecoming, her subsequent work in the horror genre, was made available in select theatres in July of 2009. As a result of a medical condition, Barton was unable to be present at the premiere of the psychological thriller. She also had a role in the movie Don’t Fade Away, which was released in 2009.
