Who is Shaggy?

Orville Richard Burrell CD, better known by his stage name Shaggy, is a Jamaican reggae rapper, singer, and songwriter who has achieved success with the songs “It Wasn’t Me,” “Boombastic,” “In The Summertime,” “Oh Carolina,” and “Angel.” Burrell CD was born on October 22, 1968, and is better known by his stage name Shaggy. In addition to winning the Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist in 2002, he has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, winning twice for Best Reggae Album with Boombastic in 1996 and 44/876 with Sting in 2019. The 22nd of October, 1968 saw Burrell being born in Kingston.

At the age of 18, he traveled across the country with his mother to settle in New York City. Shaggy made the decision to pursue a career in music, and his first song, “Oh Carolina,” was a dancehall re-make of a ska tune by the Folkes Brothers that was featured in the movie Sliver. Shaggy’s first hit came in 1993. In the same year, Shaggy had an appearance on Kenny Dope’s album The Unreleased Project, which is considered to be in the hip-hop genre. On the Maxi-Single titled “Nice and Lovely” Hip Hop Remix, he collaborated with a number of different producers, some of which were Sting International, Don One, Lloyd “Spiderman” Campbell, Robert Livingston, and Frankie Cutlass. In 1995, he had another great success with “Boombastic,” which was later used as the title song for a famous Levi’s advertisement. In 1996, he sang on Maxi Priest’s top 20 smash “That Girl,” on which he also featured Maxi Priest.

Shaggy was dismissed by Virgin Records in 1999 because the label believed it was unlikely he would create another single with the same level of popularity as 1995’s “Boombastic.” The next year, he would acquire a recording contract with MCA Records in order to release the album Hot Shot. The album included the massively successful singles “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel,” the latter of which was constructed around two song samples: Chip Taylor’s song “Angel of the Morning, and The Steve Miller Band’s 1973 hit “The Joker.” Both songs reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and had comparable popularity elsewhere in the globe, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Scotland, and France, amongst other countries.

It would go on to be certified 8x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, as well as achieving platinum or multi-platinum status in a number of other countries, and it would rank as the second most successful album of 2001 on the Billboard Year-End charts. Hot Shot made its debut at number one on the Billboard 200. In addition, it would go on to achieve platinum or multi-platinum status in a number of other countries. In 2006, he appeared as a featured artist on the song “Famous” by the Japanese-American singer Ai, which was included on her album What’s Goin’ On Ai. He shared the track with the Turkish singer Yaln. In 2008, the group gave a performance of “Famous” in Los Angeles.
