Alexander McQueen was more of a shooting star than a comet when it comes to the fashion universe, which is dominated by names that have the longevity of comets, such as Coco Chanel and Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, and Vivienne Westwood. Alexander McQueen’s career was cut short by his suicide in 2010, when he was 40 years old. At that point, he had created 36 collections for his own label over the course of 18 years; this does not include his work at Givenchy, where he was appointed head designer in 1996.

He had worked for his own label for a total of 18 years. McQueen was a self-described “working-class kid” and the son of a cab driver. He got his start as a 16-year-old apprentice on London’s high-end tailoring strip, Savile Row, and celebrated his East End roots as he rose through the ranks of fashion. Of course, McQueen’s cheeky approach with the British press and spectacle-driven shows.

His time at Givenchy established him as a global rockstar of the fashion industry. He was lauded by Vogue, and celebrities such as Madonna and David Bowie wore his designs. He was also headhunted by Gucci creative director Tom Ford, who eventually led to the company purchasing a majority stake in Alexander McQueen’s label in the year 2000. Along with Oasis, the Spice Girls, Damien Hirst, Austin Powers, and Ministry of Sound, McQueen was riding the wave of the Cool Britannia movement at the time.

But most significantly, the quality of his work was remarkable. This is made abundantly clear in a new exhibition that is currently being held at the National Gallery of Victoria. The exhibition features more than 120 garments and accessories, along with runway footage and backstage photography, as well as a series of artworks that point to the designer’s varied influences.

It was for the European luxury bottled water company Mattoni that she filmed her first commercial for international television, which went on to win a CLIO award.
