Norman Milton Lear (born July 27, 1922) is an American television writer, film and television producer, and producer of over 100 series.  All in the Family, Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, and Good Times are just a few of the classic 1970s sitcoms that Lear was responsible for.

Lear continued to produce television, with the 2017 remake of One Day at a Time and the 2021 Netflix revival of Good Times. Five Emmys, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honors have all been bestowed upon Lear. He is a TV Academy Hall of Fame inductee. Lear is also well-known for his political engagement and support for liberal and progressive causes and candidates.

To fight the dominance of the Christian right in politics, Lear created the advocacy group People for the American Way in 1980, and he staged a tour of the Declaration of Independence in the early 2000s. Lear was born in the city of New Haven, Connecticut, in the United States of America.  Hyman “Herman” Lear, a travelling salesman, and Jeanette (née Seicol) Lear’s son. When his father was imprisoned for peddling forged bonds, [interview with Norman Lear on NPR – air date January 16, 2022]  Lear saw his father as a “rascal,” and claimed that the character of Archie Bunker (played by Lear as a white Protestant on the show) was influenced in part by him, while Edith Bunker was inspired in part by his mother.

However, when Lear was nine years old, he came across prominent anti-semitic Catholic radio priest Father Charles Coughlin while tinkering with his crystal radio set, and this episode inspired him to devote his life to advocacy.

Lear further stated that he would listen to more of Coughlin’s radio sermons over time, and that he discovered that Coughlin would sometimes find new ways to propagate anti-Semitism, such as by criticising persons who Jews considered to be “great heroes,” such as US President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In 1940, Lear graduated from Weaver High School in Hartford, Connecticut, and went on to Emerson College in Boston, but dropped out in 1942 to join the US Army Air Forces. In September 1942, Lear joined the US Army.

Elaine, Lear’s first cousin, who was married to Ed Simmons and intended to be a comedy writer, lived in Los Angeles. Simmons and Lear teamed together to sell home goods door-to-door for The Gans Brothers, and then sold family pictures. Lear and Simmons created comic routines for television appearances by Martin and Lewis, Rowan and Martin, and others throughout the 1950s.

In a 1953 Billboard magazine story, Lear and Simmons were guaranteed a record-breaking $52,000 each to write for five more Martin and Lewis appearances on the Colgate Comedy Hour that year. In a 2015 interview with Vanity Magazine, Lear revealed that Jerry Lewis hired him and Simmons to work as writers for Martin and Lewis three weeks before the comedy duo’s debut on the Colgate Comedy Hour in 1950.

In 1986, Lear and Simmons admitted that they were the main writers for three years on The Martin and Lewis Show. Lear was hired as a writer in 1954, attempting to save the new CBS sitcom Honestly, Celeste! starring Celeste Holm, but the show was cancelled after only eight episodes. After Nat Hiken resigned his position as series director, he became the producer of NBC’s short-lived (26 episodes) sitcom The Martha Raye Show.

The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show aired from 1956 to 1961, and Lear authored some of the opening monologues for it. The Deputy, a half-hour western starring Henry Fonda, was Lear’s debut television series, which he created for Revue Studios in 1959. Right-wing Christians such as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Jimmy Swaggart have accused Lear of atheism and anti-Christian bigotry.Martin E. Marty (a Lutheran professor of church history at the University of Chicago Divinity School from 1963 to 1998), a Lear associate, refuted those allegations in the January 21, 1987 issue of The Christian Century, stating that the television producer honoured religious moral values and complimenting Lear’s understanding of Christianity.

While Lear and his family had never embraced Orthodox Judaism, Marty remarked that the television producer was a devout adherent of the faith. Right-wing Christian nationalists claimed Lear was an atheist and prejudiced towards Christianity in a 2009 interview with US News journalist Dan Gilgoff.

Lear is a devout Christian, and his Born Again American ad includes some evangelical Christian terminology. He does believe, however, that religion and politics should be kept separate. Lear characterised himself as a “complete Jew” but never a practising Jew in a 2014 interview with The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles journalist Rob Eshman.
