Who is Michael Zegen?
Born on the 20th of February in 1979, Michael Zegen is a well-known actor in the United States. His performances in the television show Rescue Me, Boardwalk Empire, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel have brought him the most fame. When Zegen was five years old, his family relocated from Glen Rock, New Jersey, to Ridgewood, which is located nearby. Zegen’s mother was a schoolteacher, while his father was a lawyer. There are two brothers in all.
He has Jewish ancestry. His mother was born in a displaced people camp in Austria, and his mother’s parents were Holocaust survivors from Ukraine and Poland. His mother’s paternal grandparents were also survivors. While he was a student at Ridgewood High School, he participated in the school’s productions of plays and musicals. Skidmore College awarded Zegen his diploma in the year 2001. His first appearance on Rescue Me was as a recurrent character in seasons one through three. In those seasons, he played the nephew of the series’ main character, Tommy Gavin.
When his character started training to become a fireman in the fifth and sixth seasons, he was elevated to the main cast and given more prominent roles in the show. When Michael Zegen first saw the screenplay for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” he was under the impression that Joel Maisel’s character would not do well. “Mrs. Maisel” was nominated for and won almost every award that can be given to a television program during its first season. It was also longer than most programs, dropping in historical places that were difficult to build. This gave it a larger scope. “It was just like lightning in a bottle,” recalls Zegen.
“I had no idea that it was going to take up this much space. I had no doubt that it would be well received. I’ve worked on television shows that people watch, but this elevated everything to a whole new level. There is also a shirtless sequence in which Joel demonstrates quite plainly that he has been working out. This is one of those anything. Zegen adds with a grin, “I like to take care of myself.” “I like to take care of myself.” “If I have to brag about my accomplishments, so be it. You should constantly think about things in that manner.
Joel was a regular face in the crowd whenever Midge was doing her standup routine. Watching her, Zegen adds, was a thrill. “There is no limit to what Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Midge, is capable of. She never stops talking about how anxious she is feeling. I don’t buy it. It was a pleasure to collaborate with her on any project. In all of our scenes together, I always looked forward to them the most. She was born with a stage presence. I have no idea whether she has what it takes to be a stand-up comic, but I have no doubt that she could pull it off.”
The event generated a social media storm and helped launch Joel Maisel into another universe. Over the years, he has experienced a wide universe of folks that didn’t engage with Midge. When the two worlds collided, “Mrs. Maisel” was amazing, the 44-year-old actress says.
Much of the series’ popularity may be due to creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who understands how to organize soldiers. “There’s a level of trust involved with her that’s unparalleled,” Zegen adds. The key to her success: “She’s a former dancer and she thinks like a dancer. Even our background actors, a lot of them are dancers and it’s always like a dance.
“I thought he was going to be a guest star… and then they received the cast breakdown and it stated he was a series regular, so I was like, ‘Oh, even better.’ I had no clue. I honestly believed this was it for him. The fact that “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was willing to experiment with new elements and didn’t mind if it took more than 20 minutes to complete a task makes the show stand apart from other comedies.
“The scripts are always long,” Zegen explains. “The length of our performance is estimated to be between 55 and 60 pages. Our scripts are around 90 to 100 pages. And the spectacle is enormous. It’s been huge from the beginning. We traveled to Paris in the second season, the Catskills, and Miami, so there are a lot of things. And yet, it’s still ‘Maisel.’”
Now that shooting is complete, the actors haven’t drifted apart. They still text and converse. “I don’t think it’ll ever quite feel ‘over,’” Zegen adds. “I know the reality of it – we’re not going to be filming anymore – and that’s devastating.”
In the first season of the series, Zegen’s Joel Maisel and his wife, Midge, divorce. She begins a standup comedy career while he hops from the family firm to his own venture. In five seasons, he takes tremendous swings and remains an essential element of the Emmy-winning series.
“They were able to create this whole journey and evolution for the character,” Zegen explains. “He’s still in Midge’s orbit but he’s probably like Pluto as opposed to Venus.” Now, in its last season, “Mrs. Maisel” informs viewers about her job achievement, his economic prowess, and the future ambitions of their children. As in past seasons, the series covers a lot of terrains and shocks with story twists most didn’t see coming.
In 2010, Zegen was cast as mobster Bugsy Siegel for the second, third, and fifth seasons of the HBO series, Boardwalk Empire. In 2011, Zegen, along with James Ransone, was cast in supporting parts in the HBO comedy series How To Make It In America. Midway through the production of the second season of The Walking Dead on AMC, Zegen was given a part as a recurrent guest star on the show. In the gloomy comedy Bad Jews, which premiered off-Broadway in 2014, he originated the character of Liam.
In 2015, Zegan made his first appearance on Broadway in the play A View from the Bridge. In the 2017 season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Zegen plays the role of Joel Maisel. Because of his work in this role, he has been recognized by the Screen Actors Guild with two awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. In 2021, he made his comeback to the Broadway stage to feature in Alice Childress’s play Trouble in Mind.
