Who is Michael Sheen?
Michael Sheen is a Welsh actor who was born on the 5th of February 1969. After receiving his training at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he spent most of the 1990s working in theater, with stage parts in productions such as Romeo and Juliet, Don’t Fool with Love, Peer Gynt, The Seagull, The Homecoming, and Henry V. During this time, he also trained at London’s RADA. Olivier Award nominations came his way in 1998 and 1999 for his work in the productions of Amadeus at the Old Vic and Look Back in Anger at the National Theatre.
Because of his performance in Caligula at the Donmar Warehouse in 2003, he was put in consideration for a third Olivier Award nomination. Since the year 2009, Sheen has appeared in a more diverse array of roles. In 2009, he made appearances in the fantasy films Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The following year, in 2010, he was featured as a guest on the NBC comedy series 30 Rock for a total of four episodes.
He had an appearance in the science fiction movie Tron: Legacy as well as the romantic comedy Midnight in Paris directed by Woody Allen. In “The Passion,” which was performed at National Theatre Wales, he both directed and starred. At the Young Vic, he portrayed Hamlet beginning in late 2011 and continuing until early 2012 in the title role. In 2012, he appeared in the film The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, in which he had a leading part. He was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2013 for his performance in the television drama Masters of Sex, which was shown on Showtime.
Sheen portrayed an imprisoned serial murderer surgeon on the drama series Prodigal Son, Aziraphale on the fantasy comedy series Good Omens, and Chris Tarrant in the film Quiz. During the whole time that COVID-19 was under lockdown, he starred with his friend and co-star on Good Omens, David Tennant, in the comedy show Staged He portrayed himself in the production. Sheen was born on February 5, 1969, in Newport, which is located in the county of Monmouthshire in Wales. He is the son of Irene, who worked as a secretary, and Meyrick, who worked as a personnel manager for the British Steel Corporation.
He only has a younger sister whose name is Joanne. The family spent the better part of a decade living at Llanmartin, which is located close to Newport. When he was five years old, his family relocated for work to Wallasey, but after three years, they finally made their home at Port Talbot, which is his parents’ hometown in Glamorgan. Sheen spent most of his career in the 1990s working in the theater, and he has said in subsequent interviews that he will never feel “slightly more at home” on stage.
“It’s more of a medium that actors work in. You are your own editor, and nobody else decides what is shown about you to the public. His first part in a professional production was in the 1991 production of When She Danced at the Globe Theatre. At the time, he was in his third and final year of study at RADA. He said that the job was “a big break” for him later on. One day I was at RADA taking a movement lesson, and the following day I was at a read-through with Frances de la Tour and Vanessa Redgrave.
The Evening Standard’s Milton Shulman referred to the performance as “excellent,” while The Observer referred to it as “a notable West End debut.” In 1992, Sheen was nominated for a MEN Theatre Award for his performance in Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Exchange. This caused theatre reviewer Michael Coveney to proclaim Sheen “the most exciting young actor of his generation… a volatile, electrifying, and technically fearless performer.” Sheen’s performance in Romeo and Juliet was performed at the Royal Exchange.
He received a nomination for the Ian Charleson Award in 1993 for his performance as Perdican in Alfred de Musset’s Don’t Fool With Love, which was staged at the Donmar Warehouse. It was referred to be “quite thrilling” by The Independent. In the same year, 1993, Sheen made his debut on television in the BBC miniseries Gallowglass and also participated in the world premiere of Harold Pinter’s play Moonlight at the Almeida Theatre. Moonlight was performed at the Almeida Theatre.
Sheen has been referred to as “a stage monster” by director Sam Mendes, who believes that the actor’s Welsh heritage is responsible for this trait: “I’m serious. He is fiery, erratic, and unpredictable, much like Anthony Hopkins and Richard Burton. He is Welsh in the style of those two actors. Sheen was spotted and given a spot on Arsenal’s youth squad when he was 12 years old; however, his family was not prepared to move to London at that time. Sheen is an avid football player. Later on, he expressed his appreciation to his parents for their choice, stating that the likelihood of him having a successful career as a professional football player was “so slim.”
Sheen was brought up in a theatrical household, with both of his parents participating in local amateur operatics and musicals. Later in life, Sheen’s father worked as a part-time professional Jack Nicholson lookalike. Sheen’s mother was also active in local amateur operatics and musicals. When Sheen was a teenager, he was active with the West Glamorgan Youth Theatre as well as the National Youth Theatre of Wales later on. Sheen has been quoted as saying, “It was an outstanding youth theater, and it taught me not only a great deal about acting but also about work ethic; it was very disciplined.”
He cites the performances of Laurence Olivier and the writings of theatrical critic Kenneth Tynan as two of the things that had an impact on him, adding that “the combination of those two things kind of blew my head off.” Sheen attended Blaenbaglan Primary School, Glan Afan Comprehensive School, and, lastly, Neath Port Talbot College, where he received his A-levels in English, Drama, and Sociology. He is now working as an actor. He gave some thought to enrolling in an English program at a university, but ultimately opted to go to theater school instead. He traveled to London in 1988 in order to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Prior to this, he had spent the previous year working as a cashier at a Welsh fast-food restaurant known as Burger Master in order to make some extra cash. During his second year at RADA, the Society of London Theatre honored Sheen by bestowing upon him the Laurence Olivier Bursary. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting in 1991.
Sheen is politically active, and in 2017, after undertaking a study on Wales’s connection with England, he handed back the OBE he had received for his services. Since the 2000s, Sheen has been more well-known for his work as an actor in cinema, particularly due to his performances in a variety of biographical films. His portrayal of former Prime Minister Tony Blair in the films The Deal, The Queen, and The Special Relationship, written by Peter Morgan, earned him nominations for both a BAFTA Award and an Emmy.
The Deal was a television film. The Queen and The Special Relationship were all feature films. In addition, he was considered for a BAFTA award for his performance as the unstable comedic actor Kenneth Williams in BBC Four’s 2006 Fantabulosa! He was also considered for a fourth Olivier Award in 2006 for his portrayal of the broadcaster David Frost in Frost/Nixon, a part that he reprised in the film version of the play that was released in 2008. In the 2009 film, “The Damned United,” he played the role of Brian Clough, a football manager who was known for his controversial tactics.
