Who is Maud Adams?

Maud Adams was born Maud Solveig Christina Wikstrom on February 12, 1945, and is a Swedish actress and model. She is best known for her roles as two different Bond girls, the first of which was in The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), and the second of which was as the title character in Octopussy (1983). She also made many other appearances in films and television shows, such as The Christian Licorice Store (1971), Rollerball (1975), Killer Force (1976), and Merciless (1989). Maud Solveig Christina Adams was born in Lule, Sweden, under the name Maud Solveig Christina Wikstrom.

Her mother, Thyra, was a government tax inspector, and her father, Gustav Wikstrom, was a comptroller. She is proficient in five different languages and has considered a career as an interpreter in the past.  In 1963, she was found in a shop by a photographer who asked her to take her picture. The photographer then entered the picture in the Miss Sweden contest that was organised by the magazine Allers. After that, her career as a model took off. Adams followed Eileen Ford to New York City after beginning their employment together in Paris.

Her career as an actress got its start when she was asked to appear in the 1970 film The Boys in the Band. In that film, she had a small role as a photo-shoot model during the opening credits. In the 1970s, she appeared as a guest star on a number of American television series, including Hawaii Five-O and Kojak. In the film “The Man with the Golden Gun,” which catapulted Adams to international fame, she played the role of the tragic mistress of the film’s antagonist, Christopher Lee (1974).

In a short amount of time, she had roles in the futuristic film Rollerball (1975) directed by Norman Jewison, as well as several films produced in Europe. In 1981, she starred alongside Bruce Dern in the obsession thriller Tattoo. She was so well regarded by James Bond film series producer Albert Broccoli that she was asked to return in Octopussy in 1983, this time as a lead, the character of the title—an exotic and mysterious smuggler, again opposite Roger Moore. This was because she was cast opposite Roger Moore in that film.

Adams had Swedish co-stars in all three of her Bond films: Britt Ekland as Mary Goodnight in The Man with the Golden Gun; Kristina Wayborn as Magda and Mary Stavin as an Octopussy girl in Octopussy; and in A View to a Kill (1985), in which she appeared only as an extra, Mary Stavin played agent Kimberley Jones, and Dolph Lundgren played Venz.  Adams notes that playing a Bond girl does not always indicate that an actress will continue to enjoy success in her career “When you think about it, there’s no way you can’t enjoy the fact that you were a Bond Girl.

How could you? It’s part of popular culture, and having a place in it is something to be proud of.” Adams had a recurring role in the American television series Emerald Point NAS during the years 1983 and 1984. However, she was unable to maintain her high profile and was forced to settle for supporting roles in films of lower quality, such as Jane and the Lost City in 1987. She also made an appearance in the September issue of Playboy that same year, which was devoted to the Bond girls.

In 1994, she was the host of the Swedish television show Kafé Lule, and in 1998, she appeared in an episode of the Swedish soap opera Vita longer as a guest star. She made a guest appearance on That ’70s Show in the year 2000, playing the role of a bridesmaid to Tanya Roberts. She did so alongside Kristina Wayborn (her co-star in Octopussy), as well as Barbara Carrera; all four of these actresses are referred to as “Bond girls.”In addition to that, she served as president of a beauty products manufacturer known as Scandinavian Biocosmetics.

In 1966, Adams wed photographer Roy Adams, and they later divorced the following decade in 1975. In 1999, she wed her present husband, private mediator and retired judge Charles Rubin and they have one child together. Adams did not produce any offspring from either of his marriages.
