Who is Kate Nash?

Kate  Nash  is an English singer-songwriter and actor.Nash debuted her singing career in 2005. Her 2007 song “Foundations” became a smash and propelled her to public prominence in the UK. Her first album, Made of Bricks, landed at No. 1 in the UK and was a minor worldwide hit. Nash subsequently won the title for Best British Female Artist at the 2008 Brit Awards. Her second studio album, My Best Friend Is You, was released in 2010 and reached the top 10 in the UK and Germany. After she departed from a big label, Nash self-released her third studio album, Girl Talk, in 2013, although it failed to equal the economic success of her prior recordings.

Her fourth and most current studio album, Yesterday Was Forever, was also published independently in 2018, supported by her fans through a Kickstarter effort. Kate Marie Nash was born in the London Borough of Harrow in London on 6 July 1987, the second of three daughters born to an English father and Irish mother. Her father, Steve, is a systems analyst, while her mother, Marie, was a hospice nurse.

She learnt to play the piano at an early age. At 18, she had cardiac radiofrequency ablation in attempt to eliminate tachycardia.  The procedure later inspired her song “Death Proof”.  She attended the BRIT School and initially planned to pursue acting, but shifted to music when she was rejected from many theatre institutions and universities, including the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Prior to her musical career, she worked at a River Island shop and a Nando’s restaurant. Nash debuted on a musical career in 2005, when she started recording after tumbling down the stairs and injuring her foot, which left her homebound. She began playing live, presenting her first gigs in bars, at open mic evenings, and an anti-folk festival in Brighton.

After many concerts, she uploaded her songs to MySpace where she acquired a management and received attention due to backing from Lily Allen.  Her first single, comprising tracks “Caroline’s a Victim” and “Birds”, was recorded and produced in Iceland by Valgeir Sigurðsson, and released via Moshi Moshi Records in February 2007. The release was limited to 2,000 copies and available exclusively on 7-inch vinyl. Due to demand, additional 1,000 copies were created and they too sold out. CD promo CDs were prepared for distribution to the press and DJs and are infrequently available for sale. The music video for “Caroline’s a Victim” was directed by Kinga Burza and gained rotation on MTV2. The song was then included on the CD Moshi Moshi Singles Compilation and the single’s B-side, “Birds”, was included on Nash’s first album.

Both songs have also been distributed on digital music services. During mid-2007, Nash played at various festivals, including the Wireless Festival, Bestival, Electric Gardens, Glastonbury, Latitude, Reading and Leeds, Oxegen and T in the Park. Throughout late 2007 and early 2008, she released three additional singles from Made of Bricks. “Mouthwash” and “Pumpkin Soup” both hit the Top 40 on the UK Singles Chart.

Although her fifth single “Merry Happy” didn’t chart well in the UK, the song found small success in other countries, notably the United States and Canada. Made of Bricks peaked at number 36 on the US Billboard 200 chart in January 2008.  It would subsequently be rated Platinum in the UK and Gold in Germany.  In February 2008, Nash was rewarded with the Best British Female Solo Artist title at the 2008 Brit Awards.  She also received the Q Award for Breakthrough Artist and the NME Award for Best Solo Artist.  Nash began on her maiden tour in Australia and the US in 2008 and played the 2008 Glastonbury Festival.

In April 2007, Nash was signed to the Polydor spinoff Fiction Records and made her formal TV performance debut on Later… with Jools Holland the following month. Her second song, “Foundations”, which she co-wrote with producer Paul Epworth, was released by Fiction on 18 June 2007, and reached number two in the official UK Singles Chart. Following this success, the label announced intentions to push up the release of Nash’s first album Made of Bricks to 6 August 2007. Produced by Paul Epworth, the CD comprised many of the tunes she had been playing throughout her two countrywide tours.

Made of Bricks was leaked to filesharing networks a few days before its official commercial release and subsequently garnered varied reviews; The Independent characterised it as being in “pole position for worst album of the year”, while a BBC review termed it “an album of unexpected vigour and diversity”.  It proved to be financially successful when it debuted and peaked on the UK Albums Top at number 1, and lasted in the chart for nearly forty consecutive weeks.
