Who is Jon Stewart?

Jon Stewart, an American comedian, political pundit, actor, filmmaker, and television host, was born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz on November 28, 1962. From 1999 until 2015, he was the anchor of Comedy Central’s satirical news programme The Daily Show. He currently presents The Trouble with Jon Stewart, which debuted on Apple TV+ in September 2021. Stewart was conceived by Marian, a teacher who later became an educational consultant, and Donald Leibowitz, an energy coordinator for the New Jersey Department of the Treasury. He was born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz at Doctors Hospital in New York City’s Upper East Side.

Family members of Stewart are Ashkenazi Jews who immigrated to America from Belarus, Poland, and the Ukraine. His grandfather was one who was born in Manzhouli. He has an older brother, Lawrence, a younger brother, Dan, and two brothers, Matthew. He is the second of four sons.  Stewart earned his degree in psychology from The College of William & Mary in 1984 after first majoring in chemistry there. Stewart joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity while attending William & Mary, but after six months he started to distance himself from the group and eventually left.

He subsequently recalled, “My college career was waking up late, memorising someone else’s notes, using bongs, and attending soccer practise.  He played three seasons as a starter for the Tribe men’s soccer team in 1981, 1982, and 1983. With a team that went 40-15-9 in his three seasons with the programme, he recorded 10 goals and 12 assists.  In the William & Mary Athletics’ official records, he is identified as Jon Leibowitz.  Jon is described as “athletic, fierce, and quick” by Al Albert, the former head coach of the Tribe men’s soccer team from 1971 to 2003. He also said that he “wasn’t the most technical or clinical player, but he could make things happen.”

Following graduation from college, Stewart worked a variety of jobs, including contingency planner for the New Jersey Department of Human Services, contract administrator for the City University of New York, puppeteer for special-needs kids, soccer coach at Gloucester High School in Virginia, caterer, busboy, shelf stocker at Woolworth’s, bartender at the Franklin Corner Tavern, and bartender at Trenton, New Jersey’s storied City Gardens.

He claimed that his time spent working at City Gardens was a turning point in his life: “Upon discovering City Gardens, I thought, “Well, maybe I’m not a gigantic oddball. Perhaps there are others who share this sense of longing for something different from what they already have. Well, I think that motivated a lot of people. It was a highly imaginative setting. There was a lot of potential there.” When Stewart was eleven years old, his parents got divorced, and he spent much of his time avoiding his father.

He abandoned his last name and started going by his middle name due to his tense relationship with his father, which he described as “still ‘difficult'” in 2015. As Stewart said, “The idea of taking my mother’s maiden name crossed my mind, but I decided it would offend my father too much. Did my father and I ever have any issues? Yes. But everyone always looks at  through the lens of ethnicity.”  In 2001, he formally changed his last name to Stewart.

Growing up, Stewart and his brother Lawrence attended Lawrence High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Lawrence was previously the chief operating officer of NYSE Euronext, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.  Stewart claims that when he was younger, he experienced antisemitic bullying.  He described himself as “really into Eugene Debs and a bit of a communist” in high school.

Stewart was raised during the Watergate affair and the Vietnam War era, which gave him “a healthy mistrust towards official reports.” He jokingly claims that one of the “scarring events” of his upbringing was being fired by Lawrence while working alongside his brother at their first job, a Woolworth’s store.  As someone who “raised me,” he has also thanked the late television producer Norman Lear.

Stewart began his career as a stand-up comic before transitioning to television as the host of Comedy Central’s Short Attention Span Theater. Later, he hosted You Wrote It, You Watch It and The Jon Stewart Show, both on MTV, before the latter was reworked, cancelled by the network, and moved to syndication. He has also acted in a number of movies, such as Big Daddy  and Death to Smoochy. However, following taking the helm of The Daily Show in 1999, where he also served as co-executive producer and a writer, he has done fewer film ventures.

The Daily Show quickly grew in popularity and reputation after Stewart joined it. During his time there, the show won 22 Primetime Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and was nominated for prizes for journalistic reporting. He was awarded the Mark Twain Award for American Humor in 2022. The 78th and 80th Academy Awards were hosted by Stewart. He is a co-author of two books: Earth: A Visitor’s Guide to the Human Race, published in 2010, and America: A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction, one of the best-selling books in the US in 2004.

Stewart has largely kept a low profile in the entertainment sector since leaving The Daily Show, but he has utilised his notoriety and voice to advocate consistently for the health benefits of combat veterans and first responders to the 9/11 attacks. For his “tireless activism, creativity, and leadership  pass the permanent authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act,” he was awarded the New York City Bronze Medallion in 2019.  By playing a key role in the passage of the Remembering our PACT Act of 2022, which increases healthcare access and funding for veterans exposed to harmful compounds during their service, such as burn pits, he continues to use his platform as an advocate for veterans.
