Who is Janet Devlin?

Janet Devlin  is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter, who competed in the eighth series of The X Factor in 2011, where she finished in fifth place. Devlin’s debut album was released in October 2012 via PledgeMusic on 1 July 2013. After a string of EPs and singles, her Janet Maureen Aoife Devlin was born on 12 November 1994. She is the youngest of four children to Aquinas and Patricia Devlin and has three elder brothers: Jason, Gavin and Aaron. Prior to entering The X Factor, she lived with her parents and brothers in Gortin, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

She attended an Irish language pre-school, and later attended Drumragh Integrated College where she completed her GCSEs. In 2011, Devlin auditioned for the eighth series of The X Factor. Her audition was screened on 20 August 2011, where she performed Elton John’s “Your Song” in front of judges Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland and Tulisa.  Her audition was successful as all four judges put her through to bootcamp. After passing the 2 challenges at bootcamp, Devlin progressed to the judges’ houses round in Rowland’s Girls category  and was later put through to the live shows alongside Misha B, Amelia Lily and Sophie Habibis.

She performed Coldplay’s “Fix You” in week 1 of the live shows and was put through to the next round by Rowland, as there was no public vote in the first week. Devlin received the most public votes during the first four weeks of voting, topping the public vote more frequently than any other act and advanced to the quarterfinal before joining Misha B in the bottom two. Due to Rowland’s refusal to vote during one of her own performances and Barlow being denied the opportunity to vote, she was eliminated by Walsh and Tulisa.

Devlin would have gone to the semi-final and Misha B would have been eliminated, according to voting data, which showed that Devlin garnered more votes than Misha B. “Chasing Cars” was Devlin’s song for the sing-off. Courtney Love tweeted Simon Cowell during the live performances with an offer to play one of Nirvana’s songs for Devlin during the programme, but it never happened.  According to rumours, Devlin had at least three offers for recording contracts.  After the event, Devlin received an offer for a recording deal from RKA Records, a label that is partially owned by Dragons’ Den entrepreneur and star Duncan Bannatyne.

Following the X Factor Live Tour, Devlin began production on her debut album at Steelworks Recording Studios, Sheffield. On May 28, 2012, she entered the recording studio for the first time. There, she collaborated with Grammy Award and Ivor Novella Award-winning producer Eliot Kennedy and his group to write and record three songs: “Crown of Thorns,” “Thinking Back Yesterday,” and “Who Am I Today?” One of the first songs she co-wrote with Jim Jayawardena and Philippa Hanna , “Crown of Thorns,” rapidly made its way into her live performances.

Devlin wrote every song on her debut album, generally with just one other co-writer. In collaboration with Joe Janiak, Helen Boulding, and Ethan Ash, she has written songs. She has also collaborated with songwriters such as the Faulkner brothers, Toby and Newton Faulkner, Joshua Radin, and Jack Savoretti on potential songs for her debut album.

Devlin said in 2013 that she had written about 25 songs and planned to keep writing more to produce the finest possible album.  She released two brand-new live versions of songs on her YouTube account on October 26, 2012. They were the previously mentioned “Crown of Thorns” and “Wonderful,” which were co-written with Newton Faulkner.

There was an opportunity to record backup vocals with Devlin when her debut album was launched on PledgeMusic, but this did not take place. The album was scheduled to be published in 2013, with 45% of the pledge goal being fulfilled in the first two weeks, according to a statement made in December 2012. Devlin started recording her album in early 2013 after hitting 100% on New Year’s Eve 2012. She completed recording her debut album’s limited edition on June 26, 2013. On July 1st, 2013, Hide & Seek was made available to pledgers.  On August 14, 2013, Janet gave pledgers access to a unique additional acoustic EP called Nothing Lost.

Devlin and Newton Faulkner collaborated once more on June 25, 2013, when Devlin contributed vocals to Newton’s studio zoo album project. She contributed backing vocals to two songs and more prominently featured backing vocals on the song “Plastic Hearts” as well. On December 6, 2013, she debuted a live rendition of her song “Things We Lost in the Fire” on her YouTube channel.

Although Devlin has said she is not aware of any link, Courtney Love has indicated in interviews that she thinks Janet and her family are distant relatives of Kurt Cobain. Prior to the X Factor auditions, Devlin’s only performance experience was singing in her school, bars, and neighbourhood talent events. She had posted a lot of singing-related videos to her official YouTube page. Confessional, the second studio album, was released on June 5, 2020.
