Who is Jaleel White?

American actor Jaleel White was born on November 27, 1976. His work as Steve Urkel on the comedy Family Matters is what made him most famous.  White’s first television role, which he began playing at the age of three, was a 1984 guest appearance on The Jeffersons. Later, he went through the audition process to play Rudy Huxtable on The Cosby Show. When Bill Cosby wanted to model his television family after his actual family, Keshia Knight Pulliam allegedly took White’s place in the part.

He was cast in the CBS sitcom Charlie and Company the next year to play the role of Flip Wilson and Gladys Knight’s kid. The show was created as CBS’ response to the immensely popular Cosby Show, which had its NBC debut in 1984.  Charlie and Company, in contrast to The Cosby Show, failed to appeal to viewers and was cancelled in May 1986.  He played a guest role on Mr. Belvedere and made an appearance in the Good Morning, Miss Bliss pilot episode in 1987. White appeared in Cadets, a sitcom starring Soleil Moon Frye, as a supporting character in 1988. On September 25, 1988, ABC broadcast a preview special that included the pilot episode. However, the network decided not to air the series.

He had a couple guest appearances in the 1980s on NBC’s One to Grow On. White created his most well-known character, Steve Urkel, on Family Matters when he was just 12 years old. Originally intended to be a one-off performance, White was granted a permanent starring role after the character’s popularity was discovered. He also portrayed a number of other Urkel family members, including Myrtle Urkel and his alter ego Stefan Urquelle.

The character of Urkel was promoted with breakfast cereal and an Urkel doll at the height of Family Matters’ success.  White didn’t just act in the show; he also created some of the episodes, including one at the age of 19 that had the best rating for the season that year.  One of the longest-running sitcoms with a predominately black cast in television history, the series was a mainstay of ABC’s TGIF schedule.

He appeared in The Jaleel White Special in 1992 as both Steve Urkel and a fictitious version of himself who was filming a movie.White, who was 21 years old at the time the series ended in 1998, had grown weary of the part and had been deeply affected by the passing of his close friend and co-star Michelle Thomas from an aggressive type of stomach cancer. In a 1999 interview conducted soon after the series’ termination, he said, “If you ever see me play that character again, take me out and shoot me in the head and put me out of my agony.” White had a hard time landing other jobs because his Urkel persona was so well-liked and closely defined him.

White later came to terms with the personality. He discussed the 1999 election in a Vanity Fair interview from 2011 “It’s sad how remarks are taken out of context, as stated in the quote in the “bullet” above. I clearly recall the interview. I cherished acting as those characters. But the truth is that I was developing. To be really honest, I was holding back on my own development as a man in order to keep that role as authentic as possible.” White said when asked if he would ever play Steve Urkel again: “I’ll always say, “Never say never,” because I’m quite imaginative. I’m having trouble picturing how I could pull it off in a way that would be humorous and irreverent for me and the viewers “.

White played a part in the Camp Cucamonga television movie on NBC. Jennifer Aniston, Brian Robbins, and Sherman Hemsley are among the movie’s ensemble cast members. Chad Allen, Candace Cameron, Danica McKellar, Josh Saviano, and Breckin Meyer are among the other child performers from the time who also make an appearance.

The role was originally planned to be a one-time guest appearance on the show, but viewers took to him immediately, and White ended up joining the ensemble regularly. Nine seasons in total of the show were shown, largely on ABC’s TGIF lineup on Friday nights from 1989 to 1997 and on CBS’s ill-fated CBS Block Party from 1997 to 1998. Then, in the 2019 television series Scooby-Doo and Guess Who, White returned to the character of Urkel for the first time in 21 years. White was born in Culver City, California, as the only child of dentist Michael White and homemaker Gail White. Later, his mother took over as his manager.

Before graduating from UCLA in 2001, White attended South Pasadena High School and John Marshall Fundamental High School in Pasadena, California.  White started playing the part of a child after consulting his preschool teacher. At age three, he began appearing in TV ads. In a Jell-O pudding pops commercial with Bill Cosby, White made a significant appearance.

In addition, White was the first actor to portray the well-known Sonic the Hedgehog character from the Sega video games in animated media. He did this in the DIC Entertainment studio’s Sonic Underground, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. In the 2013 Sonic fan film, he later played Sonic again.

White went on to star in the brief-lived UPN comedy series Grown Ups after Family Matters ended. After a brief break from performing, White enrolled at UCLA in Los Angeles, California, where he received a degree in film and television in 2001. He made a comeback to acting in Dreamgirls and made guest appearances on Boston Legal, Castle, Fox’s House, ABC’s Castle, and USA’s Psych.

He played Dr. McCormick in the 2010 science fiction movie Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus. White began competing in season 14 of Dancing with the Stars in March 2012 and finished in seventh place overall after being eliminated in May of that same year. White served as the host of the Syfy game show Total Blackout in April 2012. Officer Adams, played by White, first featured in Bones in January 2017. In the Netflix series The Big Show Show, which ran for one season in 2020, White played a recurring part.
