Who is Eric Stoltz?

An actor and producer with a background in theatre, Eric Cameron Stoltz has acted in indie and mainstream motion pictures. He was conceived on September 30, 1961, in Whittier, California, to elementary school teacher Jack Stoltz and musician Evelyn Vawter.

His heritage includes Scottish, German, and English. Eric was raised in American Samoa and Santa Barbara, California. At the age of fourteen, he began playing the piano for local musical theatre productions, such as “Mame,” starring Anthony Edwards, with whom he had previously co-starred in Fast Times at Ridgemont High as two of Jeff Spicoli’s stoner friends (1982).

When both were students at the University of Southern California, the two became close and eventually shared a room. After quitting school in his junior year, Eric joined a repertory group that performed ten plays at the Scottish festival of Edinburgh. He relocated to New York in 1981, trained with Peggy Feury and Stella Adler, and shortly after that, he made his acting debut in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982).

He attracted notoriety in the 1980s by playing Rocky Dennis in Mask (1985) and in John Hughes’ Some Wonderful (for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination) (1987). He made his Broadway debut in 1988 with Great Performances: Our Town, for which he received a Tony Award nomination.

He alternated between theatre and cinema in the 1990s, developing a diverse CV that includes studio pictures (Pulp Fiction (1994), indie films (The Waterdance (1992), Sundance Festival Winner), and films he produced (Mr. Jealousy (1997)). He also continued to perform on Broadway and off-Broadway in New York (in “Two Shakespearean Actors,” “Three Sisters”) (“The Importance of Being Ernest”, “And the Glass Menagerie”).

He continued to work in television, playing Helen Hunt’s ex on Mad About You (1992), appearing for a year on Chicago Hope (1994), and appearing in the Arthur Penn-directed films Inside (1996), A Killer in the Family (1983) (costarring Robert Mitchum), and The Passion of Ayn Rand (1999), all of which were available on cable (with Dame Helen Mirren). In New Mexico, Eric Stoltz has dated Ally Sheedy, Lili Taylor, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Bridget Fonda.

He has worked on a television movie, many short films, several independent films, and television programs, including Grey’s Anatomy (2005), Boston Legal (2004), Nashville (2012), and Glee. Since 2002, he has focused mostly on directing (2009). He was named the Madam Secretary producing director for the CBS drama series in 2014.

Stoltz was chosen to play Marty McFly in the 1985 motion picture Back to the Future. Stoltz was sacked, and Michael J. Fox was hired five weeks after production started. Fox was re-shot in scenes that had previously been shot. He played Daniel Graystone in the science fiction drama Caprica in 2010, and he also started directing episodes of Glee regularly.

The son of elementary school teacher Jack Stoltz and violinist Evelyn B. (née Vawter), Stoltz was born in Whittier, California. He has two sisters: Susan, a writer, and Catherine, an opera singer. Stoltz was reared in Santa Barbara, California, and American Samoa, where as a youngster, he once worked as a pianist for nearby musical theatre plays.

After his junior year, he left the University of Southern California, where he had been enrolled. In 1981, he relocated to New York, where he studied under Peggy Feury and Stella Adler. Stoltz joined a repertory group at the Edinburgh Festival in the 1970s that presented eleven plays. He returned to the country in 1979 and enrolled in USC to study theatre, although he later left to seek parts in movies and television.

He was chosen to play Steve Benson in the 1978 television adaption of The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank by Erma Bombeck. During the production of Stoltz’s first feature picture, Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), which Crowe scripted and in which Stoltz had a supporting part, the director Cameron Crowe and the actor became close. Stoltz claims Crowe offered him a position in each of his next movies.

In Crowe’s next four movies, The Wild Life, Say Anything…, Singles, and Jerry Maguire, he made an appearance. When Michael J. Fox, the director’s initial choice for the part, decided to split his time between the film and his television comedy Family Ties, he was replaced by Marty McFly after roughly a month of production. Robert Zemeckis, the filmmaker, said that while Stoltz gave a commendable performance, it lacked the same comic sense he was looking for.

The movie used some of the original footage when Stoltz was there but did not appear. In the 2010 Fringe episode “Peter,” Stoltz’s portrayal of the character is alluded to when, in another reality, a theatre marquee reads, “Back to the Future starring Eric Stoltz.” Stoltz gained notoriety in 1985 after receiving a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Mask as Rocky Dennis. He had a number of parts in the 1980s, including one in the John Hughes-written and -produced 1987 smash Some Wonderful.

Stoltz alternated between the theatre, cinema, and television throughout the 1990s, acting in studio and indie films such as Pulp Fiction (1994) and The Waterdance (1992). Additionally, he was the producer of the movies Mr. Jealousy (1997), Sleep with Me (1994), and Bodies, Rest & Motion (1993).

He continued to perform on the New York stage in Broadway and off-Broadway productions of Three Sisters, Two Shakespearean Actors, and Arms and the Man (The Importance of Being Earnest, The Glass Menagerie, Sly Fox, and Our Town). Because of his portrayal of George Gibbs in the 1989 Broadway production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Featured Actor.

Great Performances: Live from Lincoln Center included a performance of this play and was nominated for a 1989 Emmy. He often appeared on television in the series Mad About You (five episodes, 1994–98), spent a year on Chicago Hope (1994), and appeared in several TV and cable films, including Inside (1996), which Arthur Penn directed, and The Passion of Ayn Rand (1999), which starred Helen Mirren. The Indie Support Award went to Stoltz at the 1998 Los Angeles Film Festival.
