Who is Angela Lansbury ?

Dame Angela Brigid Lansbury DBE (born 16 October 1925) is an Irish-British and American actress and singer who has appeared in a number of films, stage productions, and television shows. Her career has extended over 80 years, with the majority of it spent in the United States; her work has also earned widespread worldwide notice. Lansbury became the first living Academy Award nominee and one of the final performers from Hollywood’s Golden Age after Olivia de Havilland died in July 2020.

Lansbury is the daughter of Irish actress Moyna Macgill and English politician Edgar Lansbury, and was born into an upper-middle-class household in central London. To get away from the Blitz, she travelled to New York City in 1940 to pursue acting. In 1942, she moved to Hollywood and signed with MGM, where she got her first film roles in Gaslight (1944) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), for which she received two Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe Award.

She went on to star in 11 more MGM films, largely in supporting roles, after her contract with the studio expired in 1952. Although she was mostly regarded as a B-list actress during this time, her performance in The Manchurian Candidate (1962) was much praised and is regarded as one of her best, earning her her third Academy Award nomination.

Lansbury rose to prominence in musical theatre after starring in the Broadway musical Mame (1966), which garnered her her first Tony Award and cemented her reputation as a homosexual icon.Lansbury relocated from California to County Cork, Ireland in 1970, despite personal hardships, and continued to work in theatre and film throughout the decade.

Leading parts in the stage musicals Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, and The King and I, as well as the classic Disney feature Bedknobs and Broomsticks, were among his many credits (1971). In 1984, she made her television debut as fictitious writer and sleuth Jessica Fletcher in the American whodunit series Murder, She Wrote, which ran for 12 seasons until 1996 and became one of television’s longest-running and most successful detective drama programmes.

Lansbury gained control of the series and served as its executive producer for the remaining four seasons through Corymore Productions, a company she co-owned with her husband Peter Shaw. She also became a voice actress, appearing in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) and Don Bluth’s Anastasia (1997). Queen Elizabeth II named Angela Lansbury a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2014. Three biographies have been published about her. Lansbury’s father died of stomach cancer when she was nine years old, and as a coping method, she retreated into creating characters.

Due to financial difficulties, her mother married a Scottish colonel, Leckie Forbes, and moved into his Hampstead home, where Lansbury attended South Hampstead High School from 1934 to 1939. Despite this, she regarded herself to be mostly self-taught, having learned from literature, the theatre, and the movies.

She described herself as a “total movie junkie,” going to the movies on a daily basis and envisioning herself in various roles. She began studying acting at the Webber Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art in Kensington, West London, in 1940, after temporarily studying music at the Ritman School of Dancing.

She made her theatrical debut as a lady-in-waiting in the school’s performance of Maxwell Anderson’s Mary of Scotland. Angela’s grandfather died that year, and with the outbreak of the Blitz, Macgill chose to send Angela, Bruce, and Edgar to America, while Isolde stayed in the UK with her new husband, actor Peter Ustinov.

In mid-August, Macgill landed a job supervising 60 British youngsters being evacuated to North America onboard the Duchess of Athol. She then travelled to New York City by train, where she was financially sponsored by Charles T. Smith, a Wall Street tycoon, and moved in with his family in Mahopac, New York.

Lansbury received an American Theatre Wing scholarship to study at the Feagin School of Drama and Radio, where she appeared in productions of William Congreve’s The Way of the World and Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan. The family had moved to a flat on Morton Street in Greenwich Village by the time she graduated in March 1942.

Following his recovery, Anthony worked as a television director, directing 68 episodes of Murder, She Wrote, as well as marrying and raising three children. [required citation] Deirdre married a chef and founded a restaurant in West Los Angeles with her husband.

“Angela Lansbury towers over a great cast…rests on no laurels and steals her every scene,” wrote Daniel Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter about Lansbury. She won her first Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical Theatre Production for her portrayal as Arcati in April 2015, at the age of 89, and the Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre in November 2015.

Lansbury’s return to Broadway in a revival of Enid Bagnold’s 1955 drama The Chalk Garden was formally announced on June 2, 2016. Scott Rudin directed the play, which will be staged at a later date.

Lansbury, however, announced in an interview released on September 20, 2016, that she will not be acting in The Chalk Garden, adding, “At my age, I’ve decided that I want to be with my family more, and being alone in New York doing a play needs an amazing amount of time left alone.”

On November 18, 2019, Lansbury made her Broadway comeback as Lady Bracknell in Roundabout Theatre Company’s American Airlines Theatre production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.
