Who is Wayne Gretzky ?

Wayne Douglas Gretzky ( born January 26, 1961) is a retired professional ice hockey player and head coach from Canada. Between 1979 and 1999, he played for four different teams in the National Hockey League (NHL). Based on comprehensive polls of hockey writers, ex-players, general managers, and coaches, he has been dubbed “the Great One”by many sportswriters, players, the NHL itself, and The Hockey News.

Gretzky is the all-time leading goal scorer, assist maker, and point scorer in NHL history, with more assists than any other player. He is the only NHL player to score more than 200 points four times in a single season. Gretzky also had 16 professional seasons with 100 points or more, 14 of which were consecutive.

He held 61 NHL records at the time of his retirement in 1999: 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records, and six All-Star records. Gretzky had scored 378 goals and 139 assists with the Brantford Nadrofsky Steelers in just one season by the age of ten.

His play drew national attention, including a profile in the Toronto Telegram by John Iaboni in October 1971. Gretzky got 26 points while playing for Brantford in the 1974 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.  He had almost 1,000 goals before the age of 13.

His behaviour drew a lot of criticism from other players’ parents, especially his teammates’, and he was booed frequently.  On “Brantford Day” at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens in February 1975, the “capper” was booed, according to Walter.

Gretzky’s family arranged for him to move to Toronto and play hockey when he was 14, partially to further his career and partly to get him away from the unwelcome pressure he was experiencing in his hometown. The Gretzkys had to go to court to get Wayne the ability to play in a separate location, which was previously forbidden.

Wayne played Junior B hockey for the Toronto Nationals, in a league with 20-year-olds, after the Gretzkys won. With 60 points in 28 games in 1975–76, he was named Rookie of the Year in the Metro Junior B Hockey League. He had 72 points in 32 games with the same team, called the Seneca Nationals, the following year when he was 15–16 years old.

Despite his offensive numbers – 132 points in 60 games in Junior B – he is a defensive player. In the 1977 Ontario Major Junior Hockey League draught of 16-year-olds, he was passed over by two teams. Tom McCarthy was chosen first overall by the Oshawa Generals, while Steve Peters was selected second overall by the Niagara Falls Flyers.

The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds selected Wayne Gretzky with the third overall pick, despite the fact that Walter Gretzky had warned the organisation that Wayne would not be moving to Sault Ste. Marie, a northern Ontario city where the junior team is subjected to a rigorous travel schedule.

Wayne Gretzky joined the Greyhounds at the age of 16 after making an arrangement with a local family he knew. Gretzky first wore the number 99 on his jersey when playing for the Greyhounds. He wanted to wear number 9 in honour of Gordie Howe, his hockey hero, but teammate Brian Gualazzi was already wearing it.

Gretzky chose 99 after being advised by coach Muzz MacPherson. On June 25, 1984, Gretzky was made an officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to hockey. Because the Order ceremonies are always performed during the hockey season, he had to wait 13 years and 7 months—and two Governors General—to accept the honour.

In 2009, he was named Companion of the Order of Canada “for his sustained contributions to the world of hockey, particularly as one of the greatest players of all time, as well as his social engagement as a philanthropist, volunteer, and role model for countless young people.”

Gretzky led the NHL in goals scored five times between 1981-1982 and 1986-1987.  In 1985, 1987, and 1988, Gretzky led the Oilers to three Stanley Cup victories. Gretzky’s personal services contract with Oilers owner Peter Pocklington allowed him to continue playing when the Oilers joined the NHL. By the mid-1980s, reports surfaced that Pocklington had used the contract as collateral to gain a $31 million loan from Alberta Treasury Branches, which was owned by the Alberta government.

In 1987, Gretzky and Pocklington agreed to replace the personal services contract with a standard NHL contract, citing growing concerns in the NHL that a financial institution might be able to claim Gretzky’s rights if the heavily leveraged Pocklington went bankrupt, as well as growing dissatisfaction on the part of Gretzky and his advisers.

In a trade for Patrice Tardif, Roman Vopat, Craig Johnson, and two draught picks, Gretzky joined the St. Louis Blues on February 27, 1996. (Peter Hogan and Matt Zultek).  Following claims that he was unhappy in Los Angeles, he partially organised the trade.

The Blues and New York Rangers were the front-runners at the time of the move, but the Blues were willing to meet his wage demands.  Gretzky was chosen the team’s captain almost immediately. The Blues came within one game of the Conference Finals after he scored 37 points in 31 games for the team during the regular season and playoffs.

The projected chemistry between winger Brett Hull and the rest of the team never materialised. For the first time in his career, Gretzky was subjected to public criticism from his head coach. Mike Keenan had refused to moderate his coaching style even while coaching Gretzky with Team Canada during international competitions long before either he or Gretzky joined the Blues.

As a result, Gretzky’s professional relationship with Keenan was never particularly friendly, and the coach’s public rebukes basically put an end to any realistic chance of Gretzky remaining in St. Louis once he became a free agent.  Gretzky turned down a three-year, $15 million deal with the Blues and instead signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers on July 21, reuniting with old Oilers colleague Mark Messier for a two-year, $8 million  agreement.
