Who is Tony Bennett?

Tony Bennett is an American vocalist who performs conventional pop standards, big band, show tunes, and jazz. He was born on August 3, 1926. He’s also a painter, with works in public collections under his birth name. In Astoria, Queens, New York, he established the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.

Bennett started singing when he was quite young. He was a U.S. Army infantryman in the European Theater during the last phases of World War II. He improved his vocal technique after that, signed with Columbia Records, and had his first number-one hit with “Because of You” in 1951. Early in 1953, many tunes were released, including “Rags to Riches.”

He subsequently improved his technique to include jazz singing. Albums like The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings helped him achieve his artistic peak in the late 1950s. “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” Bennett’s hallmark song, was recorded in 1962.

During the height of the rock music period, his career and personal life took a long turn for the worse. Bennett made a return in the late 1980s and 1990s, releasing gold records and increasing his audience to include the MTV generation while maintaining his musical approach.

Bennett’s popular and critically acclaimed work lasted well into the twenty-first century. He rose to prominence as a result of his collaborations with Lady Gaga, which began with the album Cheek to Cheek (2014) and continued throughout 2014 and 2015.

Bennett surpassed the record for the longest stretch of top-10 albums on the Billboard 200 list for any living artist with the release of the duo’s second album, Love for Sale (2021); his first top-10 album was I Left My Heart in San Francisco in 1962. At the age of 95 years and 60 days, Bennett also set the Guinness World Record for the oldest individual to release a new album.

Bennett has won 19 Grammy Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards during his career. He’s a Kennedy Center Honoree and an NEA Jazz Master. Bennett’s albums have sold more than 50 million copies around the world.

Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, and it was publicised in February 2021. He continued to record, tour, and play until his physical issues forced him to retire from live appearances in August 2021. Bennett made his debut appearance in Israel with his jazz trio in September 2014, garnering a standing ovation at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium in Tel Aviv.

He also made a surprise cameo on stage with Lady Gaga the night before at Hayarkon Park in Tel Aviv.  The concert took place just days before the release of the two stars’ long-awaited collaboration and Grammy-winning album, Cheek to Cheek, which debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, extending Bennett’s record as the oldest artist to do so, earning him the Guinness World Records title of “oldest person to reach No. 1 on the US Album Chart with a newly recorded album” at the age of 88 years and 69 days.

Bennett and Lady Gaga’s co-headlining Cheek to Cheek Tour began in late 2014. A Barnes & Noble commercial also featured the two.The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern was released on September 25, 2015, and it features Bill Charlap on piano.

Before Game 5 of the baseball World Series between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets at Citi Field on November 1, 2015, Bennett sang “America the Beautiful” with the Frank Sinatra School choir.

Bennett was honoured by the unveiling of an 8-foot tall statue in his likeness in front of the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco on August 19, 2016, just a few weeks after his 90th birthday. Bennett was serenaded by a young-adult choir singing “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” with Senator Dianne Feinstein, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and several San Francisco mayors in attendance.

In 1961, Bennett sang the song for the first time at the hotel. On November 24, he performed at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and on November 30, he lit the tree at Rockefeller Center. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, NBC broadcasted a special concert.

Bennett re-recorded George Gershwin’s “Fascinating Rhythm” in September 2018, claiming the distinction of “longest duration between the release of an original recording and a re-recording of the same single by the same artist” after 68 years and 342 days, according to the Guinness World Records adjudicator.

On September 14, the song was included on Diana Krall’s collaborative album Love Is Here to Stay. Bennett’s retirement from performances was announced by his son and manager Danny Bennett on August 12, 2021, a week after his 95th birthday while playing at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.

Danny noted that, while his father was still a capable vocalist, he was growing physically feeble and, if he continued touring, he risked a serious fall. On September 30, 2021, he released his final album, Love for Sale, which was a collaboration with Lady Gaga.

The album was well-received and debuted at number eight in the United States. Despite Bennett’s age and health problems, Alexis Petridis called the singer’s performance on the album “quite extraordinary” in his review for The Guardian. Bennett set a new record for the longest streak of top-10 albums on the Billboard 200 list by a living artist, with I Left My Heart in San Francisco in 1962, his first top-10 album.

At the age of 95 years and 60 days, Bennett also set the Guinness World Record for the oldest individual to release a new album.  Bennett’s final broadcast appearance was alongside Lady Gaga at MTV Unplugged on December 16, 2021. The programme, which included duets from Love for Sale, was taped in July in front of a small studio audience in New York City.

Bennett continues to rehearse three times a week with his music director despite his retirement, according to Danny Bennett. Bennett has also found success as a painter, working under the names Anthony Benedetto and simply Benedetto.

Throughout his life, he has pursued his boyhood passion through professional training, work, and museum visits. When he’s on tour, he often draws or paints vistas out of hotel windows. His work has been shown in galleries all over the world. He was named the official artist for the 2001 Kentucky Derby, and the United Nations commissioned him to paint two paintings, one of which was for the race’s fiftieth anniversary.

The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, has his picture Homage to Hockney (for his friend David Hockney, painted after Hockney drew him). The National Arts Club in Gramercy Park in New York has a permanent collection of his Boy on Sailboat, Sydney Bay, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. has a permanent collection of his Central Park.

His works have been published in ARTnews and other publications, and they sell for up to $80,000 each.  In 1996, Tony Bennett: What My Heart Has Seen published a collection of his works. Tony Bennett in the Studio: A Life of Art & Music, a book based on his paintings, was a best-seller among art books in 2007.

While filming The Oscar in 1965, Bennett met and fell in love with promising actress Sandra Grant. After several years of living together, the pair married privately in New York on December 29, 1971.  They went to Los Angeles, where they had two daughters, Joanna (born 1970) and Antonia (born 1974).  They married in 1983 and had three children.

Bennett married Susan Crow, a former New York City schoolteacher, in the late 1980s and they had a long-term romance. Susan Marion Crow, who was born on September 9, 1966, is 40 years Tony’s junior and grew up in a household of Bennett admirers, with the singer posing with Crow’s mother, Marion, while she was pregnant with her.

Crow was the founder of Bennett’s Bay Area fan group when he was a youngster. Bennett and Crow established Exploring the Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to the creation, promotion, and support of arts education.

At the same time, they established (and named after Bennett’s buddy) the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Queens, a public high school dedicated to the instruction of the performing arts, which debuted in 2001 and had a high graduation rate.  Bennett married Crow in a private civil wedding witnessed by former Governor Mario Cuomo on June 21, 2007, in New York.
