Who is Sara Ramirez?

Actress and singer Sara Ramrez is of Mexican and Mexican-American descent. Ramrez was born in the city of Mazatlán in the state of Sinaloa. He went to the United States when he was eight years old and ultimately earned a degree in fine arts from the Juilliard School. Ramrez was born on August 31, 1975, in the city of Mazatlán, which is located in the state of Sinaloa in the northwest corner of Mexico. Both of Ramrez’s parents are originally from Mexico. After their parents split when Ramrez was eight years old, Ramrez moved in with his mother and finally settled in Tierrasanta, which is located in the city of San Diego in the state of California. Their mother was inspired by Ramrez’s love for music to enroll them in the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, which is where their mother made the fortunate discovery of their singing ability during an audition. When Ramrez was a senior in high school, he began appearing in theatre shows.

While Ramrez was still enrolled at Juilliard, he was seen by a casting director, who gave him the part of Wahzinak in the Broadway musical The Capeman, which was written by Paul Simon and performed in 1998. Although the show received a lot of harsh feedback, Ramirez was singled out for their “outstanding” performance. The musical was based on the life of the Puerto Rican mobster Salvador Agron. They both made their début in the film industry in the same year, appearing in the romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail in a small but “memorable” part each. In the movie, Ramrez played the role of Rose, a cashier at Zabar’s who was “very serious about her line’s cash-only policy.”

The movie starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. In the video game UmJammer Lammy, a spin-off of PaRappa the Rapper, which was played on the PlayStation system by Sony, Ramirez provided the voice acting for the main character, Lammy. They subsequently played a similar but less significant part in the sequel to the latter game, which was released for the PlayStation 2.

Ramrez had an appearance in the 1999 film The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm, which was directed by Mark Lamos. They were nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award, which is a testament to the quality of their performance, which gained them much acclaim. Their “beautiful, smoky voice” was commended by Charles Isherwood of Variety, although he was scathing of their “torchy” interpretation of “The Man I Love,” which overlooked “the wry irony that infuses Ira’s lyrics.” After then, Ramirez was seen in the production of Edward Kleban’s A Class Act on Broadway in the year 2001.

They decided to cast someone else in the character of Felecia, the protagonist Ed’s superior, instead of bringing back off-Broadway actress Julia Murney. They participated in the performance of The Vagina Monologues in 2002 with Tovah Feldshuh and Suzanne Bertish. The same year, they appeared in additional shows such as Fascinating Rhythm and Dreamgirls. During this time period, Ramrez also performed in guest appearances on a number of other television programs, some of which include: NYPD Blue, Law & Order: SVU, Third Watch, and Spin City.

The part of the Lady of the Lake in the musical Spamalot, which was written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, proved to be Ramrez’s breakthrough performance. The musical, which is based on the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail from 1975, had its debut on Broadway in 2005 to a great deal of critical acclaim. Ramrez was singled out for their performance, earning multiple honors including the 2005 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance. Both of these prizes were given in recognition of Ramrez’s outstanding work.

One reviewer for The Playgoer said that their “intensity is totally serious and totally ludicrous and totally on key,” while another reviewer for The New York Times referred to them as “a toothsome devourer of scenery.”  Ben Brantley of The New York Times referred to them as “a toothsome devourer of scenery.” They were given the highest praise possible in a review that was published in Entertainment Weekly, which called them a show-stealer.

After performing in parts such as the Witch in Into the Woods, Dolly in Hello, Dolly!, and Miss Hannigan in Annie, Ramrez was suggested to attend the Juilliard School in New York City. There, they earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and graduated. While attending Juilliard, Ramrez continued to develop their acting abilities and began training as a singer. Ramrez is completely proficient in the use of both Spanish and English.

After beginning their acting career on Broadway, where they made their first performance in Paul Simon’s The Capeman, Ramrez went on to pursue acting opportunities in cinema and television. Their performance as the original Lady of the Lake in the Broadway musical Spamalot in 2005 earned Ramrez the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. This was Ramrez’s big break in the entertainment industry. It was provided to Ramrez to choose their own primetime television program from among the many offerings on ABC’s schedules. Ramrez selected Grey’s Anatomy. They played the role of Dr. Callie Torres, one of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer characters in American television history who appeared in a total of 239 episodes over the course of 11 seasons.

One of the first regular gay roles on primetime television was a character that Ramrez offered to make bisexual, making it one of the earliest examples of a queer part in a series. After leaving the show, Ramirez revealed that she was bisexual and, subsequently, non-binary, referring to herself with they/them pronouns. After that, they went on to play the bisexual and non-binary characters Kat Sandoval on Madam Secretary and Che D’az on And Just Like That…, respectively.

Ramirez made her debut as a voice actress in the 1999 computer game named “Um Jammer Lammy.” Since then, she has provided her voice for the character of Queen Miranda in the anime series “Sofia the First”. 2009 was the year that Ramrez released their first song, titled “Silent Night.” In 2011, their EP with the same name made its debut on the Billboard 200 at position 37.

In 2015, the Ally for Equality Award was bestowed on Ramrez by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation in recognition of his substantial activism on behalf of LGBT rights. In addition to winning a Tony Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Satellite Award, Ramrez has also been honored with a number of other prestigious awards.
