Who is Samantha Barks?

Samantha Barks is a Manx actress and singer who was born on the 2nd of October 1990. She sprang to prominence in 2008 when she finished in third place in the talent show-themed television series I’d Do Anything, which was produced by the BBC. She made her cinematic debut as Éponine in the 2012 production of Les Misérables directed by Tom Hooper, and she has recorded three studio albums: Looking in Your Eyes, Samantha Barks, and Into the Unknown. Due to her outstanding performance in the movie, she was presented with the Empire Award for Best Female Newcomer as well as a National Board of Review Award, which she and the rest of the cast of the movie split.

Barks published her first studio album, titled Looking in Your Eyes, in April of 2007, and it went on to sell around 600 copies. The album contained a number of songs that she had a hand in writing, and it was distributed by the independent record company Brunswick Studios. In June of 2007, she was the opening act for the Peel Bay Festival, where she supported Matt Willis and the Sugababes. Barks competed in the Maltese International Song Competition as a representative of the Isle of Man in December 2007. There, she was awarded the top prize of €2,000 and the title of Best Foreign Singer. She sang “Nothing Else,” a track from her album, as well as “Play On,” a tune that was popular in Malta.

Barks participated in the competition I’d Do Anything in 2008, in which she was one of the finalists. The competition was held to find a new, undiscovered lead to portray the role of Nancy in a West End production of the British musical Oliver! She competed in the final round, where she ended up placing third. Barks spent his childhood in Laxey, which is located on the Isle of Man. Her mother is of Irish descent and hails from Malahide. Barks received his education at Laxey Primary School and then continued his studies at St. Ninian’s High School in Douglas.

Barks made the trip to London by herself when she was 16 years old so that she could finish her A levels at the Arts Educational School (ArtsEd) in Chiswick. River Island was the location of her first employment outside of the fashion business. Barks began his dancing instruction at the age of three at Dancers Barre, where he studied ballet, contemporary dance, and tap. He then attended Stagecoach Isle of Man, Theatrix, Stage One Drama School, and the Manx Ballet Company for further training.

As a show of support for Sam, Tourism Minister Adrian Earnshaw rechristened the Isle of Man as the “Isle of Sam” on April 29, 2008, which was exactly halfway through the tournament. After the renaming event, the greeting signs at Ronaldsway Airport and Douglas Sea Terminal were updated to reflect the new names.

Barks gave a performance of “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked during the eighth week of the competition. In the week preceding the performance, she got encouragement from the American actress Idina Menzel, who created the character of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West in the musical Wicked.

In the ninth week of the competition, Barks garnered the fewest amount of votes from the general public and thus had to compete in the sing-off against Rachel Tucker. They performed the song “Memory” from Cats the Musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber made the decision to save Barks’s life while taking Tucker’s. He explained his reasoning by stating, “Last night Cameron and I were both saying that we thought both of you would be fantastic Nancys and now here am I faced with this.” Barks was the winner of the competition. Tucker was eliminated. But I have to make a choice, and I have to consider the direction that the program will go in the long run for Cameron, and I believe that I have no choice but to side with you, Samantha.

During the week building up to the two-part final on May 31, the Nancy finalists recreated some of Madonna’s most famous photographs for press shots. These pictures were taken during the week before the final. Liza Minnelli taught each Nancy individually at a “Master Class” that was held in London.

At the conclusion of the first phase of the competition, it was revealed that Barks had achieved third place, and Andrew Lloyd Webber said, “Do you know what, I did think this would happen.” Samantha, you have accomplished a lot to get to this point; kudos to you! Barks is quoted as having commented, “It’s been the most amazing experience of my life.” Thank you to everyone, including the panel, for having it turn out to be so amazing.

Barks featured with Jonathan Bailey in the musical comedy Groove High which aired on the Disney Channel from 2012 to 2013, and then again in the London production of the musical The Last Five Years that took place in 2016. In 2018, she made her Broadway debut in Pretty Woman: The Musical, playing the part of Vivian Ward for the first time. She has been performing as Elsa in the West End version of Frozen ever since 2021.
