Who is Ryan Kesler ?

Ryan James Kesler (born August 31, 1984) is a retired ice hockey centre from the United States. Kesler spent the first ten years of his NHL career with the Vancouver Canucks, having been selected in the first round, 23rd overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

On June 27, 2014, he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks, where he played his final season. He is best known as a two-way forward who won the Selke Trophy in 2011 and is known for his agitating style of play. Kesler played junior hockey for the United States National Team Development Program before accepting a college hockey scholarship to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).

He was named CCHA Rookie of the Week three times and CCHA Rookie of the Month once in one season with the Buckeyes, earning him honourable mention for the CCHA All-Rookie Team. Kesler has played for the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League (AHL), where he was named to the 2005 AHL All-Star Game, in addition to the United States National Team Development Program and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Kesler has won one World U18 Championship gold medal, one World Junior Championship gold medal, one 2010 Winter Olympics silver medal, and one 2001 World U-17 Hockey Challenge gold medal while representing the United States at seven events sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation.

Linda and Mike Kesler welcomed Ryan Kesler into the world on August 31, 1984, in Livonia, Michigan. After brother Todd and sister Jenny, he is the youngest of three children. Mike, his father, was a 37-year supervisor for the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association after playing college hockey at Colorado College.

He began introducing his children to ice skating at a young age; Ryan remembers skating when he was around four years old. Mike also runs a hockey school in Livonia, where Kesler attended every summer from the age of six to seventeen.

Mike was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer in April 2007 and underwent surgery to remove seven inches of his small intestine. In the Midwest Elite Hockey League, Kesler played minor ice hockey for teams like Compuware, Honeybaked, and Little Caesars (MWEHL).

He was a member of the Little Caesars team that competed in the 1998 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. Kesler was cut from every AAA team he auditioned for when he was 13 years old. As a result, he played for and coached for his father’s Livonia Hockey Association bantam team.

Kesler attributes his involvement in hockey to his brother, who is nine years his senior. He formed a lasting friendship with Chris Conner, who was later drafted by the Dallas Stars, during his minor league career. He was a Minnesota North Stars fan, despite growing up in Michigan.

Mike Modano, a Livonia native, was a role model for Kesler when he was a young hockey player. During his childhood, he favoured Joe Sakic of the Quebec Nordiques and Colorado Avalanche. Kesler was announced as the cover athlete for the NHL 2K11 video game by 2K Sports in March 2010, and the game was released a few months later in August. He previously did motion capture for NHL 2K10 for 2K Sports.

Kesler debuted his own athletic and casual clothing line in November 2010. The line was dubbed “RK17” in collaboration with Vancouver’s Firstar Sports. Kesler was featured in ESPN’s Body Issue magazine and named in a feature entitled “Most Beautiful People of B.C.” by a local publication after a promotional photograph of him modelling athletic underwear garnered widespread media attention in Vancouver.

His speed and wrist shot are two of his most well-known abilities, the latter of which has improved in recent years as his offensive output has increased. He’s also a good faceoff taker. He is an effective shot blocker on the penalty kill, using his body to keep pucks out of the net.

He frequently uses his size and strength to maintain position in front of the opposing net to either screen the goaltender or deflect shots while playing on the powerplay.Kesler’s competitiveness and desire to outwork opponents have been credited with his success as a player.

Kesler, on the other hand, has admitted that his competitive nature has led him to lose his cool on numerous occasions. Canucks management encouraged him to play with more focus in the off-season of 2010, to keep his emotions in check, and to avoid physical and verbal confrontations with opposing players. During the 2010–11 season, he received media attention for adapting his game to the situation while having his best season yet.

Kesler attributes the shift to his role as a father, who wants to set a mature example for his kids when they watch him play. Kesler was named to the American team’s 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin orientation camp, which was held at World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado from September 5–8, 2005.

Kesler, who was one of the camp’s younger players, did not make the Games’ final roster. Instead, at the 2006 Men’s World Ice Hockey Championships in Riga, Latvia, Kesler made his national men’s team debut three months after the Olympics.

In the United States’ 3–0 victory over Denmark, Kesler had one point in seven games, assisting on a Yan Stastny goal. In the US’s 6–0 quarter-final loss to Sweden, he was named player of the game.  During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Kesler was a member of the US men’s national ice hockey team, which won a silver medal. For the 2014 Winter Olympics, Kesler was a member of the United States men’s national team.

Kesler was an early contender for a spot on the American team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he played his NHL hockey at the time. In the final game of the preliminary round, the United States took on Canada to determine the pool’s top spot.

With the US up by one goal in the final minute, Kesler dove past opposing forward Corey Perry to score an empty-netter and seal the 5–3 victory. In a rematch of the gold medal game, Kesler scored on a deflection from Patrick Kane in the second period, but ultimately lost 3–2 in overtime to Sidney Crosby’s game-winning goal.
