Who is Ruth Wilson?

Ruth Wilson MBE is a British actress who was born on January 13th, 1982 in the United Kingdom. She is best known for her roles as the title character in the film Jane Eyre, Alice Morgan in the BBC psychological crime drama Luther, Alison Lockhart in the Showtime drama The Affair, and Mrs. Wilson. She has been playing the role of Marisa Coulter in the BBC/HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials since 2019, and for her performance in this role, she was awarded the BAFTA Cymru Award for Best Actress in 2020. Her filmography includes roles in “The Lone Ranger,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House,” and “Dark River,” both of which were released in 2013. Wilson is the daughter of Nigel Wilson, an investment banker, and Mary Metson, who worked as a probation officer before she married Nigel Wilson. Wilson was born in Ashford.

Tobias “Toby” Wilson, Samuel “Sam” Wilson, and Matthew Wilson are her older brothers. Samuel “Sam” Wilson is a journalist for the BBC. She is the grandchild of the author and former MI6 officer Alexander Wilson and his third wife, Alison, whom he bigamously married. She is their granddaughter. Her great-great-grandmother on her father’s side was of Irish descent. Wilson was reared in the Catholic faith and spent his childhood in Shepperton, which is located in Surrey. Prior to her part in Jane Eyre, Wilson had just one professional film credit to her name. This credit was for her appearance in the situation comedy Suburban Shootout, which she shared with Tom Hiddleston. During the 2006–2007 television season, she shot the second season of Suburban Shootout, a new Agatha Christie’s Marple mystery for ITV titled “Nemesis,” and Stephen Poliakoff’s BBC television drama Capturing Mary in which she played the younger version of Mary.

Tanya, the character that Wilson played in Gorky’s Philistines in 2007, was on stage at the Royal National Theatre from May through August of that year. She was the host for the 2007 Lilian Baylis Awards ceremony, which took place in June. Other projects that were completed in 2007 included a guest appearance in the sitcom Freezing as Alison Fennel; narration of the documentary The Polish Ambulance Murders; and the portrayal of a mentally ill doctor in the dramatized documentary The Doctor Who Hears Voices.

In the Donmar Warehouse production of A Streetcar Named Desire that ran from the 23rd of July to the 3rd of October 2009, she played the role of Stella. On 15 November 2009, AMC Television and ITV presented the 2009 TV miniseries version of The Prisoner, in which Wilson portrayed the Village doctor, “No. 313”. She portrayed “Queenie” in an adaptation of Andrea Levy’s Small Island, which debuted on BBC1 in December 2009 and also broadcast in the United States on PBS in 2010.

Since 2010, she has starred in the British psychological police drama Luther as Alice Morgan, a research scientist, and extremely bright woman classified by Luther as a narcissist. In September 2012, the series creator, Neil Cross, said that he was in the midst of producing a spin-off of Luther focusing on Wilson’s character, however, as of 2018 this has not materialized. Cross remarked, “The BBC is really interested in the concept. The only real issue would be how many and how frequently we would do it – whether it would be a one-off miniseries or a recurring miniseries, a co-production or not.”While Wilson could not appear in series four of Luther owing to production coinciding with The Affair, she returned for series five.

From 4 August to 8 October 2011, Wilson played the title role in Eugene O’Neill’s Anna Christie at the Donmar Warehouse with Jude Law. Her performance caused The Guardian to dedicate an editorial to Wilson’s “courageous, edgy, and compelling talent”.

In 2014, Wilson started appearing as Alison Bailey on the drama television series The Affair, developed by Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi. She received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama in January 2015 for her work in the series’ first season. She exited the series in 2018 after four seasons. It was stated in December 2019 that Wilson’s resignation was due to “frustrations with the nudity required of her, friction with Treem over the direction of her character, and what she ultimately felt was a ‘hostile work environment'”.

Wilson made her Broadway debut in Constellations, a play written by Nick Payne, at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. She played opposite Jake Gyllenhaal during the play’s run from 12 January to 14 March 2015. She got a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play for her performance.

She attended Notre Dame School, an independent Catholic school for girls based in Cobham, before entering sixth form at Esher College. As a teenager, she worked as a model. She studied History at the University of Nottingham, and while there was also active in student play at the Nottingham New Theatre. She graduated from Nottingham in 2003 and from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in July 2005. Afterward, she co-founded Hush Productions. During her stay at Nottingham, she participated in the TV military strategy game Stay Commanders, helping her friends battle in the Battle of Pharsalus.

Wilson is a three-time Olivier Award contender and two-time winner, gaining the Best Actress for the eponymous role in Anna Christie, and the Best Supporting Actress for her performance of Stella Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire. She is also a two-time Tony Award-nominated for her performances in Constellations and King Lear on Broadway. She has won a Golden Globe for her work in The Affair and garnered nominations for a British Academy Television Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama for the lead role in Jane Eyre.
