Phillip Francis Housley (born March 9, 1964) is a former player and current coach in the American professional ice hockey league. Currently, he works as an assistant coach with the National Hockey League’s Arizona Coyotes (NHL). From 2017 until 2019, Housley served as head coach of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres.
Housley was picked in the first round of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft by the Sabres as a defenseman, and he went on to play for the Sabres, Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Housley was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 for his accomplishments as a player. With 1,232 points (338–894), Housley is the second highest scorer among Americans. Until Mike Modano broke it on November 7, 2007, he held the record for the most points by an American-born NHL player.
Housley never won the Stanley Cup, though he came close with the Capitals in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998, when the Detroit Red Wings swept them. Until the retirement of Shane Doan in 2017, Housley had played more NHL games than any other player without winning the Stanley Cup.
Housley broke Craig Ludwig’s record of 1,257 NHL games on January 21, 2000. Housley went on to play a total of 1,495 games in the NHL. For over seven years, he held the record for the most games played by an American-born player, until Chris Chelios broke it on November 24, 2006.
Housley was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 9, 2015, after being inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. He was inducted into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame on February 7, 2007, during a pre-game ceremony that included former head coach Scotty Bowman.
Housley coached high school hockey at Stillwater Area High School in Stillwater, Minnesota, from 2004 to 2013, assisting in the rebuilding of the programme. Housley worked with the Nashville Predators as an assistant coach from 2013 through 2017, particularly with defensemen.
Housley led Team USA to victory in the 2013 IIHF World U20 Championship in Ufa, Russia, on January 5, 2013. In 2007, and 2011, he was an assistant coach for Team USA at the World Junior Championships. The Buffalo Sabres hired Housley as their next head coach on June 15, 2017.
In his first season, he guided the Sabres to a 31st-place finish, and early in his second season, the team went on a 10-game winning streak before collapsing down the line. On April 7, 2019, the Sabres dismissed Housley following the 2018–19 season.
Housley signed a multi-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes as an assistant coach on June 26, 2019. Housley is the defensive coordinator as well as the power play coach for the Coyotes.
