Who is Nancy Kwan?

Nancy Kwan is one of the first Asian performers to create a name for herself in Hollywood. The Hong Kong-born American actress is most known for her eponymous character in her first film, ‘The World of Suzie Wong,’ for which she earned a ‘Golden Globe Award. ’ She was educated in Hong Kong and England. She subsequently learned ballet and received a teaching credential from the ‘Royal Ballet School,’ London. She was seen by Hollywood producer Ray Stark, who gave her a 7-year contract and also planned acting classes for her. Her first film won her enormous praise, and she started to be dubbed as the “Chinese Bardot. ” After acting in various American, European, and Eurasian films, such as ‘The Main Attraction,’ ‘Tamahine,’ and ‘Honeymoon Hotel,’ she spent a decade in Hong Kong, where she created a production business.

Returning to Hollywood in 1979, she resumed working in films, TV, and stage plays. Kwan is a spokesman for the ‘Asian–American Voters Coalition. ’ She is married to producer-director Norbert Meisel. She has an elder brother, Ka Keung, and five younger half-siblings. Her parents split when she was 2 years old. During World War II, her father evacuated Hong Kong (1941), with his servants carrying his two children in wicker baskets. They lived in Western China for 5 years and returned only when the war was done.

Growing up in wealthy circumstances, Kwan enrolled at the ‘Maryknoll Convent School. ’ Interested in sports from infancy, she learned ‘T’ai Chi’ and horseback riding. At 12, Kwan was enrolled at the ‘Kingsmoor School,’ Glossop, England. She learned all dance styles in a ballet school in Manchester. After graduation, she entered the ‘Royal Dance School,’ London, and studied and performed ballet for 4 years, gaining a ballet teaching degree. While holidaying in Hong Kong, Kwan was discovered (in a studio established by her father) by Hollywood producer Ray Stark, who was seeking an Asian/Chinese actor for the film remake of the classic ‘Broadway play ‘The World of Suzie Wong. ’ Although she did not have any previous acting experience, Kwan was contacted for a screen test.

The exam did not go very well. However, because of her Eurasian characteristics and also because of the spark Stark had noticed in her, she was considered for the part. Kwan met the ski instructor Peter Pock during the shooting of ‘The Main Attraction’ in the Austrian Alps in 1962. The two got married the same year. They have a son, Bernhard “Bernie. ” However, they divorced in 1968. In July 1970, she married playwright David Giler in Nevada.

The marriage terminated in 1972. Kwan married Hollywood producer-director Norbert Meisel in 1976. Her only son died of AIDS in 1996, at the age of 33. Kwan was transported to the US, where she attended a Hollywood acting school. She was given a 7-year deal by Stark’s ‘Seven Arts Productions. ’ Besides Kwan, another prominent actor, France Nuyen, who had successfully played the same character on stage, was being considered for the movie. Kwan had a modest part in the theatrical performance and was an understudy for the major character.

Later, ‘Paramount Studios’ picked Nuyen for the film part. Disappointed, Kwan proceeded with the stage presentations. Nuyen could not be part of the film owing to personal difficulties. Thus, Kwan earned her first part. ‘The World of Suzie Wong,’ which was about a free-spirited Hong Kong prostitute, debuted in 1960 and proved to be a big hit. Kwan received the ‘Golden Globe award for the ‘Most Promising Newcomer-Female’ in 1961. Kwan’s next film was ‘Flower Drum Song’ (1961), an adaption of a successful ‘Broadway musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II.

The character of a nightclub singer and dancer dubbed ‘Linda Low’ allowed her great space to demonstrate her dancing talents. The film got five ‘Academy Award nominations. Soon, Kwan featured in other American, European, and Eurasian films. In ‘The Main Attraction’ (1962), Kwan essayed an Italian citrus artist, alongside singer Pat Boone. She played a major role as an untamed Tahitian in the film ‘Machine ’ (1963). (1963). After a sabbatical, Kwan reappeared as a Chinese–American scientist, ‘Sally Fraser,’ in the aviation drama ‘Fate Is the Hunter’ (1964). She also starred in two comedies: ‘Honeymoon Hotel’ (1964) and ‘Drop Dead Darling’ (also known as ‘Arrivederci, Baby’). Kwan then performed the major character of ‘Marjorie Lee,’ a British secretary, in ‘The Wild Affair’ (1965). (1965). She played ‘Wednesday,’ alongside Dick Van Dyke, in the popular ‘Disney’ comedy ‘Lt. Robin Crusoe, USN’ (1966). (1966).

In ‘The Wrecking Crew’ (1969), Bruce Lee choreographed the martial arts, while Kwan featured alongside Dean Martin. Following this, she worked in the far-east action movie ‘The Corrupt Ones,’ alongside Robert Stack, and the TV series ‘Hawaii Five-O,’ opposite Jack Lord. In the western ‘McMasters’ (1970), she portrayed a Native American lady called ‘Robin. ’ In 1970, Kwan left Hollywood to be with her gravely sick father and remained there for a decade. In Hong Kong, she created her firm, ‘Nancy Kwan Films,’ and featured in the TV shows Kung Fu and ‘Fantasy Island. ’ She also featured in several action flicks.

‘Spring Comes Not Again’ was her debut Chinese-language film. Kwan met producer-director Norbert Meisel (her future husband) during the making of the movie ‘Fear’ (or ‘Night Creature’). In 1979, she returned to Hollywood and subsequently acted in independent films such as ‘Walking the Edge’ (1985), ‘Keys to Freedom’ (1988), and ‘Night Children’ (1989). (1989). She starred in the TV series ‘Noble House’ (1988) and ‘Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story’ (1993). (1993).
