Who is Michel Bouquet?

Michel Bouquet was a French theatre and cinema actor who lived from November 6, 1925, until April 13, 2022. From 1947 until 2020, he appeared in over a hundred films. For Toto the Hero in 1991, he won the Best Actor European Film Award, and for How I Killed My Father (2001) and The Last Mitterrand (2001), he earned two César Awards for Best Actor (2005).

In 1998, he won the Molière Award for Best Actor for Les côtelettes, and he won it again in 2005 for Exit the King. He received the Honorary Molière for his entire career in 2014. He receive Michel On November 6, 1925, in Paris, François Pierre Bouquet was born.

He was taken to a boarding school when he was seven years old and stayed there until he was fourteen. He wanted to be a doctor, but his father was taken prisoner during World War II, and he had to drop out of school at the age of 15.

In order to support the family, Bouquet worked as a baker’s apprentice and then as a bank clerk. He returned with his mother to Paris after a brief visit in Lyon.  Marie Bouquet was a theatrical buff, which aided the young Bouquet in his search for a calling. He studied acting with Maurice Escande, a Comédie Française member, and made his stage debut in 1944 in the drama La première étape.

After that, he went to the Paris Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, where he met Gérard Philippe. Michel Bouquet first collaborated with playwright Jean Anouilh and director André Barsacq at the Théâtre de l’Atelier in Montmartre in the mid-1940s.

Bouquet first appeared in Anouilh’s Roméo and Jeannette in 1946, followed by The Rendez-vous of Senlis and The Invitation to the Castle in 1947.  In the 1950s, the actor met and worked with another theatre director, Jean Vilar. At the Festival d’Avignon, founded by Vilar in 1947, Bouquet performed various roles from the classical repertoire (Henry IV in 1950, The Tragedy of King Richard II in 1953, and The Miser in 1962).

Bouquet collaborated with Anouilh on a regular basis until the early 1970s, after which he assisted in the popularisation of British novelist Harold Pinter’s works in France, including The Collection (1965), The Birthday Party (1967), and No Man’s Land (1979).

Michel Bouquet was also named professor at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts at the end of the 1970s, where he taught until 1990. He returned to the Théâtre de l’Atelier in the 1980s and 1990s, where he had started his career. He first appeared in Eugene Ionesco’s Exit the King in 1994, and he reprised the role till 2014.

He won the Molière Award for Best Actor in a Play for Bertrand Blier’s Les côtelettes in 1998, and again in 2005 for Exit the King. He received the Honorary Molière for his entire career in 2014. [9] A year later, the British playwright Ronald Harwood praised the actor for his performance in Taking Sides.

In 2019, Bouquet announced his departure from the stage. Bouquet’s film career took longer to develop than his television career, which began in 1947. He made his film debut in Jean Anouilh’s Pattes blanches, based from his own play and directed by Jean Grémillon, in 1949, and then in Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Manon (1950) and Anouilh’s Deux sous de violettes (1951). (1951).

He appeared in the historical melodrama La Tour de Nesle, directed by Abel Gance, three years later. He narrated the documentary Night and Fog by Alain Resnais in 1955. Our Agent Tiger, directed by Claude Chabrol, was his first collaboration with him in 1965. Bouquet went on to star in a number of Chabrol films, receiving critical acclaim for his roles in The Unfaithful Wife, The Breach, and Just Before Nightfall.

He appears in Mississippi Mermaid (1969) with François Truffaut as Comolli, a private detective slain by Jean-Paul Belmondo, and The Bride Wore Black as one of Jeanne Moreau’s victims. In The Unfaithful Wife, he played the duped husband of Stéphane Audran, and in The Breach, he played Audran’s evil father-in-law. In four films by Chabrol, Bouquet and Audran collaborated.

Bouquet played the obstinate cop who terrorised Alain Delon in Deux hommes dans la ville (1972), a candidate for legislative elections in Nadine Trintignant’s Defense de savoir (1973), the hospitalised press boss surrounded by Claude Jade in Les Anneaux de Bicêtre (1976), and the formidable billionaire in Francis Veber’s comedy Le Jouet.

In Il n’y a pas de fumée sans feu and La Raison d’État, he played two gloomy roles for André Cayatte in this decade. Yves Boisset’s film Plot is another film about politics. In Cop au Vin (1986), still with Chabrol, he played a corrupt notary and Stéphane Audran’s foe.

In 1982, he played Javert in Robert Hossein’s Les Miserables adaption, alongside Lino Ventura as Jean Valjean and Jean Carmet as Thénardier, and he did so brilliantly that many Hugolians regard this performance as the epitome of Javert.

Bouquet recorded and issued discs of his readings of Cervantes, Victor Hugo, Jean-Paul Sartre, and other authors. In 2019, he produced an audio book featuring his readings of 13 of Jean de La Fontaine’s tales, which received a lot of positive feedback. Bouquet married twice and has two children. In 1967, he divorced his first wife, actress Ariane Borg.

Juliette Carré, his second wife, is also an actress with whom he has frequently shared the stage. At the age of 96, Bouquet died in Paris on April 13, 2022.Michel Bouquet died peacefully on April 13, 2022, the 400th anniversary of Molière’s birth. By that time, he had become a national treasure, and innumerable major personalities in France’s cultural and political worlds saluted him proudly and affectionately.

Most people would agree that he had every right to be happy with his job, something very few individuals can claim. In the next millennium, no other actor of his generation is likely to have as memorable a film part. He has put together one of the most amazing theatrical resumes ever, having featured in at least one play every year from 1944 to 2017 (with only a few gaps in between).

Few people can claim to have the same level of public, critical, and peer esteem as he did. However, the master thespian himself was not one to take anything for granted: he had previously stated that he saw his acting career as mostly a form of training leading up to a final act in which he could portray a few roles really well.

Still, given his ability to satisfactorily eviscerate multiple roles that marked some of his most celebrated triumphs— such as the King Bérenger role, which he played over 800 times— one can imagine with justified optimism that, by that time, Michel Bouquet would no longer be extraneous with that total sense of commitment he’d been entitled to for a very long time: he finally accomplished everything a dedicated actor of his kind c Won the Legion of Honor’s Grand Cross in 2018.
