Who is Melissa Fumero?

Melissa Fumero is an American actor. She was born Melissa Gallo on August 19, 1982, in the United States. Her first role in a professional production was in the recurrent part of Adriana Cramer in the television soap opera One Life to Live, which she began performing in the year 2004. After appearing in a few supporting parts, Melissa Fumero finally landed her first major part in the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, playing the part of Amy Santiago from 2013 through 2021. The show first aired on Fox and was then picked up by NBC. Since then, Fumero has lent her voice to the character of Melissa Tarleton in the animated series M.O.D.O.K, and she also featured as Eliza Walker in the Netflix comedy Blockbuster.

She has two boys with her husband, actor and former model David Fumero, with whom she has a marriage and a child. The 19th of August, 1982 saw Melissa Gallo being brought into this world in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. Her Cuban parents emigrated to the United States when they were young adults. While her mother stayed at home to raise the family while her father taught mathematics and worked at a jewelry business, her mother was a hairdresser and a housewife. Although Gallo spent his childhood in Guttenberg, he relocated to Lyndhurst when he was six years old.

Although she and her family spoke Spanish at home, her parents stopped pressuring her and her brother to learn the language when he ran into difficulties while he was in school. When Gallo first started working in the entertainment industry, she experienced feelings of social exclusion. She was only allowed to give her audition for a select few parts. She received the news that she had been awarded the part of Adriana Cramer on the soap opera One Life to Live only hours after finishing her last test at New York University. She referred to this as “the biggest redeeming moment” in her life.

On January 20, 2004, Gallo began appearing in the series. She appeared in two episodes of All My Children in 2005 reprising the character she had previously played. Fumero was scheduled to quit the program immediately after the expiration of her contract with OLTL in January 2008, but she remained in the role until June 11;  her last scenes were shot in May. Between September 2008 and January 2011, Fumero made many appearances on One Life to Live in a variety of different roles.

Fumero’s first major role and breakthrough occurred in 2013 when she was cast in Fox’s unnamed comedy pilot as the female lead opposite Andy Samberg. This role marked Fumero’s first big break in the entertainment industry. In April 2013, it was revealed that the name of the program will be Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The story focuses on a squad of detectives from the New York Police Department working in the made-up 99th Precinct in Brooklyn. Amy Santiago, played by Fumero, is a character that is very competitive and follows the rules.

In order to be ready, she and the cast of Brooklyn went through police and rifle training. Fumero is one of the program’s two regular Latina cast members; the other is Stephanie Beatriz, who plays Rosa Diaz. Beatriz is the only Latina character on the show. Fumero referred to this casting as “groundbreaking,” despite the fact that the two were afraid that one of them would be let go. As a consequence of this, they made an effort to differentiate their physical features from one another as much as they could.

For instance, Fumero’s character has smooth hair, whilst Beatriz’s character has wavy hair. Because Fumero had prior expertise in comedy, she often experienced anxiety, and the writers decided to include this characteristic in Amy’s character. On September 17, 2013, the pilot episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine was broadcast, and it was met with excellent reviews and over six million viewers. The A.V. Club referred to Fumero as “a real find” after praising the disparities between Samberg’s and Fumero’s acting approaches. Additionally, the first season was met with favorable critical reception, and it was seen by a total of 5.2 million people.

In May of 2014, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was given the green light for a second season by Fox, which was scheduled to debut during the television season that ran from 2014–2015. The debut of “Undercover” was met with favorable reviews from the media. Collider praised her comic timing, drive, and vulnerability, while Entertainment Weekly found her acting in a sequence in which Amy tells Jake  “thing’s going to happen” between them romantically believable. The reception of Fumero’s performance was favorable.

The remainder of the season was praised by the media, and the cast was judged to be “winning.” In 2015, the cast of the show was recognized by the Screen Actors Guild for their Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series nomination. As a result of Fumero’s performance, she was nominated for an Imagen Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress; she went on to get three other nominations and one victory for her work on the same program, including one in 2022.

Tiny Dancer was released in 2008, and she appeared in it as Ati, a seventeen-year-old girl who is encouraged to dance. For the part, Fumero had to master the character’s Spanish Harlem accent, which was a challenge for her. She also underwent intensive stretching and yoga training in order to perfect her performance in modern and contemporary dance. Following the conclusion of One Life to Live, Fumero indicated an interest in pursuing a career in comedy and secured a position in Important Things with Demetri Martin for Comedy Central in the year 2009. In the years that followed, she had guest appearances on shows such as Gossip Girl, Royal Pains, The Mentalist, and CSI: New York.

Gallo used to like making plays and putting on performances, and he also started taking dancing classes when he was a kid. After taking in a performance of The Secret Garden on Broadway when she was eleven years old, she began to consider a career in acting. As a consequence of this, her parents enrolled her in acting courses. She found that theater classes were fun since she and her students were encouraged to concentrate more on their performances than on their outward looks.

She continued her education by attending dancing and acting lessons right up to the day she graduated. When she got the admission letter to New York University, which she referred to as her “dream school,” she assumed that the high cost of attendance would prevent her from attending the university. Gallo’s parents put a significant portion of their resources into the cost of her education, took out a number of loans, and had her remain at their house until she went to New York City when she was 19 years old. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater in 2003 and graduated from the institution.
