Who is Mac Miller?

Malcolm James McCormick, better known by his stage name Mac Miller, was an American rapper and record producer. He was born on January 19, 1992, and passed away on September 7, 2018. Miller entered the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene in 2007, when he was just fifteen years old, and started his career there. 2010 saw the release of his breakout mixtapes, K.I.D.S. and Best Day Ever, both of which were released after he had acquired a record contract with the indie label Rostrum Records. Blue Slide Park, Miller’s first studio album, climbed to the top of the US Billboard 200 albums chart, making it the first independently released debut album to do so since 1995. The 19th of January, 1992 saw Malcolm James McCormick being brought into the world in the Point Breeze area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

His mother, Karen Meyers, was a photographer, and his father, Mark McCormick, was an architect. He had an elder brother named Miller.  His parents were photographers. His mother is Jewish, while his father is a Christian. He has two religions in his family. Despite the fact that he and his brother were brought up Jewish, he went to a Catholic elementary school in order to “ensure a good education and the chance to play football and lacrosse.” After that, he continued his education at Winchester Thurston School and ultimately earned his diploma from Taylor Allderdice High School.

Miller was a self-taught musician who started playing the piano, guitar, drums, and bass when he was only six years old. When he was just 14 years old, he made his rapping debut. Prior to it, he had aspirations of becoming a singer. He made the decision to concentrate on his rap career when he was still in high school, and he said years later, “Once I turned 15, I became really serious about it, and it altered my life entirely… I used to be very into athletics, playing all of the sports, and attend all of the parties that were held at my high school. But until I realized that doing hip-hop could nearly be considered a career, that’s all I did. In the beginning, he was known by the moniker Easy Mac, which was commonly styled as EZ Mac. When he was just 15 years old, he released the mixtape But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy.

In 2009, he released two mixtapes under the moniker Mac Miller: The Jukebox: Prelude to Class Clown and The High Life. By this point, he had already established himself as Mac Miller. Miller earned the 21 & Under of the Year award as well as the award for Best Hip Hop Video for his video “Live Free” at the 2010 Pittsburgh Hip Hop Awards. In July of 2010, just before the release of his mixtape K.I.D.S., Miller inked a deal with the indie record company Rostrum Records. Benjy Grinberg, president of Rostrum, first encountered Miller at ID Labs, where he was working as a producer with Wiz Khalifa.

Despite the fact that Grinberg first began providing Miller with career guidance, he did not demonstrate an interest in being actively engaged with Miller’s professional endeavors until Miller started working on K.I.D.S., at which point Grinberg “noticed a maturation in his sound and approach to his music.” At this time, Miller had already begun to get attention from other record labels; nonetheless, he decided to sign with Rostrum because of its proximity to his hometown and its affiliation with Wiz Khalifa. In August 2010, Rostrum made the K.I.D.S. album available for purchase. Miller made his breakthrough during this time period by concentrating on social media interaction, digital sales, and consistent touring. This was done since he did not get radio exposure or mainstream coverage during this period.

Miller was one of 11 up-and-coming rap artists that XXL magazine named to its annual “Freshman Class” list in 2011, which also included Kendrick Lamar and Meek Mill. In March 2011, Miller released his fifth mixtape with the title Best Day Ever. It’s single “Donald Trump” became his first song to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100,  peaking at number 75, and it gained a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. A six-track EP titled “On and On and Beyond” was also published by him in March of 2011. In order to appeal to a wider demographic, four of the album’s songs had previously been included on mixtapes he had released. The EP marked his debut on the US Billboard 200 albums list, where it debuted at position number 55.

Blue Slide Park, Miller’s first album to be recorded in a studio, was released on November 8th, 2011. The album opened at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 144,000 copies, making it the first independently released debut album to achieve such a feat since Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food in 1995. The tracks “Smile Back,” “Frick Park Market,” and “Party on Fifth Ave.” all charted on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Smile Back” reaching its highest position at number 55, “Frick Park Market” at number 60, and “Party on Fifth Ave.” reaching its highest position at number 64. The United States and Canada both awarded Blue Slide Park with the gold certification. Blue Slide Park was met with a relatively mixed critical reception despite the fact that it had an amazing commercial success.

During the year 2013, he established the REMember Music record label imprint. Following the release of his second studio album, Watching Movies with the Sound Off, he parted ways with Rostrum and, the following year, acquired a recording contract with big label Warner Bros. Records. He collaborated with them on the recording of four studio albums, GO OD AM, The Divine Feminine, Swimming, and the posthumous Circles. He was honored with a posthumous nomination for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rap Album for his album Swimming. Under the guise of Larry Fisherman, he was also involved in the record production process for a number of other musicians, including himself.

Miller had a difficult time overcoming his struggles with addiction and drug misuse, which he often referred to in his song lyrics. At the age of 26, Miller passed away on September 7, 2018, at his home as a result of an unintentional drug overdose brought on by the combination of cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol.
