Tomlin’s career has spanned more than half a century, and throughout that time he has been honored with a wide variety of honors, including seven Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and two Tony Awards. In addition, the Kennedy Center Honor was bestowed on her in 2014, and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award was presented to her in 2017.
Tomlin was the daughter of Lillie Mae, and she was born in Detroit, Michigan. a homemaker who also worked as a nurse’s aide and Guy Tomlin, a manufacturing worker who was born on March 3, 1913, and died on October 24, 1970. Richard Tomlin is her younger brother’s name, and he is her only sibling. The Great Depression forced Tomlin’s parents to uproot their Southern Baptist family from Paducah, Kentucky, and relocate to Detroit, Michigan.
In spite of the fact that she went to a Southern Baptist church when she was a youngster, she did not retain any religious beliefs as an adult. She attended Cass Technical High School and graduated in the year 1957. Tomlin received his undergraduate education at Wayne State University, where he majored in biology. She changed her degree after changing her mind after trying out for a play since it made her interested in pursuing a career in the theater. Following his graduation from college, Tomlin started doing stand-up comedy in nightclubs in the city of Detroit, and then subsequently in the city of New York. She resumed her training at the HB Studio, where she had been studying acting.
Tomlin began her career in the 1960s as a stand-up comedian and also performed off-Broadway. During this time, she also did some acting. Her breakthrough performance came in 1969 on the variety program Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, where she remained a cast member until 1973. Tomlin won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance in the production “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” which premiered on Broadway in 1985. That role, which was written by Tomlin’s then-partner, Jane Wagner, who is now her wife, made Tomlin a household name in the theater world.
She was awarded Emmys for her performance in the special “Lily”, which also earned her a Grammy for “Best Comedy Album” for her album “This Is a Recording”. Tomlin was one of the first female comedians to break out in male drag with her personas Tommy Velour and Rick. She was also one of the first female comedians to perform in drag. In 1982, but subsequently famous for her performance on Saturday Night Live on January 22, 1983, she debuted the character of Pervis Hawkins, a black rhythm-and-blues soul singer with a mustache, goatee, and close-cropped afro haircut, dressed in a three-piece suit. This character was based on Luther Vandross.
Tomlin relied almost entirely on the stage lighting to produce the desired appearance for the role, using very little, if any, skin-darkening cosmetics as part of his performance. This Is A Recording was Tomlin’s first comedy album, which was published by Polydor Records in 1972. It included Ernestine’s interactions with clients over the phone and was her debut in the comedy genre. The album peaked at position No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 200, making it the highest-charting album ever released by a solo comedienne and keeping that distinction as of 2011. During that year, she was honored with a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recording.
Tomlin’s second album, released in 1972 and titled And That’s the Truth, featured her character Edith Ann and was almost as popular as her first album. It reached its highest position on the list at number 41 and was nominated for another Grammy. Among the top three ranking female comedy albums on Billboard, Tomlin owns two of them, sandwiching a Joan Rivers album that was released in 1983.
Tomlin’s third comedy album was released in 1975 and was titled Modern Scream. The album was a satire of movie magazines and celebrity interviews, and it included Tomlin playing numerous characters, such as Ernestine, Edith Ann, Judith, and Suzie. An adaption of her musical that ran on Broadway in the same year, Lily Tomlin On Stage was released by her in 1977. Additional nominations for Grammy Awards were bestowed to Tomlin for each of these albums.
Tomlin collaborated with Barry Manilow to create a song and extended play titled “The Last Duet.” Tomlin was offered $500,000 by AT&T in 1970 to portray her character Ernestine in a commercial for the company, but she turned down the offer because she felt it would compromise her creative integrity. In 1976, she had an appearance on Saturday Night Live as Ernestine in a spoof of a Ma Bell commercial.
In the skit, she shouted, “We don’t care, we don’t have to…we’re the phone company.” referring to the fact that Ma Bell was being parodied. Later on, the figure made a cameo appearance at The Superhighway Summit, which took place on January 11, 1994, at UCLA. He interrupted a speech that was being delivered by Al Gore, who was serving as Vice President at the time, on the information superhighway. She participated in an advertisement campaign for Fidelity Investments in 1998 portraying three of her other personas, although neither Ernestine nor Edith Ann was among them. In 2003, she appeared in two ads for WebEx as an “updated” version of Ernestine.
Tomlin used three animated prime-time television specials in the 1990s to reintroduce Edith Ann to the public eye and bring her back into the spotlight. In 1995, she released Edith Ann’s “autobiography,” titled My Life, which was authored in collaboration with Jane Wagner. Tomlin made her debut in the film industry with Robert Altman’s Nashville in 1975. For her performance in the film, she was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress.
In 1977, she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her portrayal of Margo Sperling in The Late Show.
