The Great Depression forced Tomlin’s parents to uproot their Southern Baptist family from Paducah, Kentucky, and relocate to Detroit, Michigan.

In spite of the fact that she went to a Southern Baptist church when she was a youngster, she did not retain any religious beliefs as an adult. She attended Cass Technical High School and graduated in the year 1957. Tomlin received his undergraduate education at Wayne State University, where he majored in biology.
