Who is Lee Grant?

Lee Grant (born Lyova Haskell Rosenthal on October 31, 1922) is an American actress, documentarian, and director. She made her film début in 1951, co-starring Kirk Douglas and Eleanor Parker as a young shoplifter in William Wyler’s Detective Story. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for this portrayal, and she also won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1952.

She was banned from acting for the following 12 years after being blacklisted in 1952. During this time, Grant was only able to find part-time acting or teaching work. Her divorce was influenced by this. Grant performed in theatre plays during this time.

Grant made her theatrical debut in the Metropolitan Opera’s L’Oracolo in 1931, and later joined the American Ballet as a teenager. She went at New York City’s Art Students League, Juilliard School of Music, The High School of Music and Art, and George Washington High School.

Grant received a scholarship at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, where she studied with Sanford Meisner after graduating from high school. At the HB Studio, Grant continued his education with Uta Hagen.

She went on to New York to study acting at the Actors Studio. She had her daughter Dinah and later divorced by the time her name was removed on the blacklist in the mid 1960s. Grant resumed her television and film career after being removed from the blacklist. She states in her autobiography:

When people asked her about her experiences during the McCarthy era, she would freeze and fall into a “near trance.”Following HUAC’s official clearance, Grant’s first prominent role was as Stella Chernak in the 1960s television series Peyton Place, for which she received an Emmy in 1966. Her off-Broadway performance in Jean Genet’s The Maids in 1963 earned her critical acclaim.

In the Oscar-winning film In the Heat of the Night, she portrayed the anguished widow of a murder victim.  Grant played the wife of a U.S. diplomat who goes undercover to discredit a rogue diplomat in an episode of Mission Impossible in 1968. She had supporting roles in The Big Bounce, a crime thriller, and Marooned, a science fiction drama, both of which were not successful in 1969.

Grant’s second picture with director Hal Ashby was Shampoo. Grant “is such a cool-style comedienne that she’s in risk of having people say that she’s good, as always,” according to critic Pauline Kael, who compared the two films.

She had severe problems with Beatty, who was also the producer, during filming and was on the verge of quitting. She wanted to play one scene in a way she thought was more authentic from the perspective of a woman, but Beatty disagreed. She told director Ashby that she couldn’t do it Beatty’s way and that she was quitting after thinking about it for a few days.

Beatty stopped her on her way out and inquired about her problems. She stated, “I sat down and informed him.” ‘Play it your way,’ he murmured, throwing up his hands. I have no idea. I am an adult male. Grant won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1986 for his film Down and Out in America.
