L. Q. Jones (born August 19, 1927) is an American actor and filmmaker who is most known for his roles in Sam Peckinpah’s films. Jones was born in Beaumont, Texas, on August 19, 1927, to railroad worker Justus Ellis McQueen Sr. and Jessie Paralee (née Stephens; 1897–1931).

In 1931, after an automobile accident, his mother died in a hospital.  Jones studied law at the University of Texas at Austin from 1950 to 1951 after serving in the US Navy from 1945 to 1946.  After corresponding with his former college roommate, Fess Parker, he turned to acting after working as a stand-up comic, temporarily playing professional baseball and football, and even trying ranching in Nicaragua.

Parker was already working in Hollywood as a film and television actor in 1954. Jones is a Republican and a practising Methodist. Jones made his film debut in Battle Cry in 1955, playing the role of Justus McQueen, his birth name.

His character’s name in the film was “L. Q. Jones,” a moniker he loved and intended to use for all of his future acting assignments. He played “Smitty Smith” in three episodes of Clint Walker’s ABC/Warner Brothers western series Cheyenne, the first hour-long western on network television, in 1955.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Jones starred in various films.
