Who is Kyrie Irving?

Kyrie Irving is an American professional basketball player now employed by the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association. His Lakota name, éla, literally translates to “Little Mountain,” and he was born on March 23, 1992. Upon his selection by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first overall choice in the 2011 NBA draft, he was honored with the title of Rookie of the Year by the league. He has been selected for the All-Star Game eight times and has been named to the All-NBA Team three times.

In 2016, he helped the Cavs win the NBA title. Irving has been a proponent of a wide variety of conspiracy theories during the course of his career. Since he refused to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine, he missed the entirety of the 2021–2022 NBA season and was suspended by the league. Antisemitic attitudes have been attributed to several of these plots, such as tweeting a link to the video Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America. On March 23, 1992, Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia, to American expatriates Drederick Irving and Elizabeth Irving. Irving is the son of Frederick and Elizabeth.

He has two sisters; the elder one is named Asia, while the younger one is named London. His dad, Drederick, was a collegiate basketball player at Boston University, where Shawn Teague was also a student. After Irving’s father finished his collegiate career, he relocated to Australia to play basketball professionally with the Bulleen Boomers in the South East Asian Basketball League. Before moving to the United States when he was just two years old, Irving and his family resided in the area of Kew, which is located in Melbourne, Australia.  He was born in the United States but also has Australian citizenship.

Irving was instructed not to use his left hand when he attended a Catholic elementary school in 1996, despite the fact that he was born with a dominant left hand.  In his first season with the squad, Irving led them to win the New Jersey Tournament of Champions for the third time in the last four years. He led the team to an average of 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. During the month of August in 2009, he captained the USA East team that won the Nike Global Challenge event.

He averaged 21.3 points and 4.3 assists per game, which led to his being named Most Valuable Player. The following year, St. Patrick was not allowed to compete in the state tournament due to the fact that they had had practices before the official start of the winter sports season.  During his senior season, he ended with an average of 24.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game, helping St. Patrick to a record of 24–3 and the title of the Union County Tournament.

Irving found out on January 19 that he had been chosen for the Junior National Select Team for 2010. On April 10th, the squad participated in the Nike Hoop Summit 2010 that was held in the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon.  In addition, he was chosen to participate in the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic in 2010, the latter of which earned him the title of the co-most valuable player with Harrison Barnes. Irving was a member of the United States squad that triumphed in the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship in June of 2010, bringing home the gold medal.

When he was four years old, his mother, who was African American and Lakota, passed away from an illness. Drederick, along with the assistance of Irving’s aunts, was responsible for raising him. Irving’s mother divorced Irving’s biological father in 2004 and remarried Shetellia Riley, who became Kyrie Irving’s agent in March of 2022. Irving has his membership in the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe officially recognized.

During his freshman and sophomore years of high school, Irving was a member of the Montclair Kimberley School football team. He became just the second player in the history of the school to score 1,000 points. He also had a scoring average of 26.5 points, 10.3 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.6 steals. During his sophomore season, he led MKA to the New Jersey Prep ‘B’ state championship for the very first time.

After completing that academic year, he decided to enroll in St. Patrick High School because he desired a more difficult academic environment.  As a result of the move, he was had to sit out the first thirty days of St. Patrick’s season.  Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who was generally considered as one of the finest players in the class of 2011, was a teammate of Irving’s at St. Patrick, where Irving was a player. Irving spent most of his childhood in West Orange, New Jersey, and it was there that he became a fan of his father’s adult basketball league.

After participating in a game at Continental Airlines Arena while on a school trip in the fourth grade, he vowed to himself that he would one day play in the National Basketball Association. “I will play in the NBA, I swear.” Irving was able to spend a lot of time in Boston because of his father’s ties to Boston University. While there, he participated in the basketball skills camp that BU offered. Irving said that when he was in the fifth grade, the head coach at Boston University at the time, Dennis Wolff, extended a scholarship offer to him.  Irving was a member of the Road Runners of the Amateur Athletic Union when he was a young man.

He has written, directed, and performed in a series of commercials playing the part of “Uncle Drew,” which was adapted into a full-length feature film in 2018. In the film Kickin’ It, he played the role of himself, and he has also provided his voice for the animated films We Bare Bears and Family Guy.

Before joining the Cavs in 2011, Irving was a member of the NCAA basketball team known as the Duke Blue Devils. The Most Valuable Player title, which is given out during the All-Star Game, went to him in 2014. Irving kicked off the Cavs’ incredible comeback against the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals by sinking the game-winning three-point field goal that ultimately won them the title. Irving made it to other Finals in 2017, but this time he asked to be traded, which led to him being sent to the Boston Celtics.

He spent the first two years of his career with the Boston Celtics before becoming a free agent in 2019 and signing with the Brooklyn Nets. Irving had been a member of the Nets for four years prior to his trade request, which resulted in his move to the Mavericks in 2023. In addition, he has competed for the United States national basketball team, with whom he helped the squad win the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic gold medal in 2016. In February of 2020, he was selected by the members of the National Basketball Players Association to take the place of Pau Gasol as one of the seven vice presidents of the organization.
