Who is Kelly Rutherford?

Actress Kelly Rutherford was born in the United States on November 6, 1968. She is well-known for her television roles as Lily van der Woodsen on The CW’s Gossip Girl and Stephanie “Sam” Whitmore on the NBC daytime soap opera Generations, Megan Lewis on the Fox primetime soap opera Melrose Place, and Stephanie “Sam” Whitmore on the NBC daytime soap opera Generations. The daughter of Ann Edwards, Kelly Rutherford was born on November 6, 1968 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.  Anthony is her brother.  She studied at Newport Beach, California’s Corona del Mar High School.

Thereafter, she pursued studies at the Beverly Hills Playhouse in California and the HB Studio in New York City.  Daytime soap operas were where Rutherford started her career. In 1987, she made an appearance on Loving, and from 1989 to 1991, she was a regular cast member on Generations. She joined the ABC show Homefront’s cast in 1992. In June 2001, Rutherford wed Venezuelan banker Carlos Tarajano.  Rutherford requested a divorce in January 2002, six months after they had been wed.  Shortly after, the wedding was highlighted in the February 2002 issue of InStyle.

In August 2006, Rutherford wed German businessman Daniel Giersch, who became her second spouse. In October 2006, she gave birth to their son Hermés Gustaf Daniel Giersch. On December 30, 2008, Rutherford filed for divorce from Giersch while expecting their second child.Rutherford and Giersch then got embroiled in a custody battle for their son and unborn child. In June 2009, Rutherford gave birth to their daughter Helena, the couple’s second child.

Rutherford and Giersch came to a temporary agreement of joint physical custody in August 2009, which was in force until April 2010.The next month, Rutherford also succeeded in getting a temporary restraining order against him. Once Rutherford’s attorney alerted the State Department to problems involving Giersch’s enterprises, the department decided they had enough evidence to deport him and cancelled Giersch’s U.S. visa in April 2012.

After being ordered to bring her son and daughter back to the United States from Monaco, where they had been living with their father since 2012, Rutherford was given temporary exclusive custody of her kids in May 2015.  On July 23, 2015, a California judge determined that Rutherford’s child custody issue did not fall under California’s purview because she now resided in New York, and her ex-husband was once more granted custody.

Rutherford then brought a lawsuit in New York, but the court determined on July 27, 2015 that it lacked jurisdiction as well. The children’s father was nonetheless granted full custody by the Monaco courts in December 2015, and Rutherford was given wide visitation rights in both France and Monaco as well as the ability to provide input on “health, schooling, religious education, and any change of residence”.

According to reports, the allegations included fraud or involvement in South American drug and weapon trafficking, both of which are classified as acts of terrorism under the PATRIOT Act. Giersch moved to France and Monaco as a result of being forbidden to enter the United States.  The children of Rutherford and Giersch travelled to France in May 2012 to spend the summer with their father.  Rutherford urged the court to give her sole custody so she could keep the kids mostly in the US after their trip to France, as the shared custody arrangement required her to travel a lot so Giersch could spend time with the kids.

A California Superior Court judge decided in August 2012, in a widely publicised decision, that the 50/50 custody arrangement should be maintained and that, because Giersch is unable to travel to the United States, the kids should live and attend school in France with him, with Rutherford travelling there to visit them. Rutherford disagreed with the ruling and asked for a stay of the proceedings while she filed an appeal; nevertheless, her motion was granted, and it was decided that in two years, his eligibility to enter the country and the children’s ensuing well-being will be reviewed.

Rutherford declared bankruptcy in June 2013, claiming she owed $2 million in debt, the most of which came from the $1.5 million she spent on legal bills associated with her divorce and custody battle with Giersch. In The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. on Fox from 1993 to 1994, Rutherford played Dixie Cousins, a saloon singer and con artist who shares a fleeting romance with Brisco.

Dixie takes over as Brisco’s main love interest in later episodes. She also made an appearance in I Love Trouble. She also played Frankie Collet in the ill-fated television series The Great Defender in 1995 and Caitlin Byrne in Kindred: The Embraced. Rutherford began as Megan Lewis in the Fox primetime soap drama Melrose Place in 1996. She appeared in the show from 1993 to 1999.

Moreover, she played Christine Hamilton in the gruesome movie Scream 3. She played Special Agent Frankie Ellroy Kilmer in the ABC programme Threat Matrix from 2003 to 2004. She appeared in the brief NBC television series E-Ring the next season. Rutherford debuted as Lily van der Woodsen in the CW drama Gossip Girl in 2007. 2012 saw the end of the series.  Rutherford has been in several Lifetime films. Rutherford was cast as Laura Wyatt, a recurring character, on the ABC suspense drama Quantico in 2016.  In the CW reboot series Dynasty from 2018 to 2019, Rutherford portrayed Melissa Daniels on a regular basis.
