Who is Kelly Clarkson?

Kelly Brianne, also known as Kelly Clarkson in the music industry, is an American singer, songwriter, novelist, and television personality who was born on April 24, 1982. She gained notoriety in 2002 when she won the inaugural season of American Idol and signed a record deal with RCA. Her first track, “A Moment Like This,” peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and ended up being the best-selling single in that nation in 2002.

It was a part of her first studio album, Thankful, which came out in 2003 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. On her second studio album, Breakaway, Clarkson left the management of American Idol in an effort to change her image. Breakaway, which had four top ten singles in the US, including the title tune, “Since U Been Gone,” “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” and “Because of You,” sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and took home two Grammy Awards. Almost 25 million albums and 45 million singles by Clarkson have been sold globally.

She has nine top-ten singles in the UK, Canada, and Australia in addition to her eleven top-ten singles in the US. She made history by becoming the first performer to ever top the pop, adult contemporary, adult pop, country, and dance charts on Billboard. Between the fourteenth and twenty-first seasons of The Voice, as well as the twenty-third season, Clarkson worked as a coach. She has been the host of her own talk programme, The Kelly Clarkson Show, since 2019.

Among her many honours, Clarkson has been given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, three MTV Video Music Awards, four American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and five Daytime Emmy Awards. While VH1 rated Clarkson sixteenth on their list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music, Billboard praised her as “one of pop music’s finest singers” and presented her with the Powerhouse Award. Jeanne Ann, an English teacher of first grade, and Stephen Michael Clarkson, a former engineer, welcomed Kelly Brianne Clarkson into the world in Fort Worth, Texas.

She is the youngest of three children; her siblings are Alyssa and Jason.  Clarkson’s father’s second marriage gave birth to two younger half-brothers as well.  After her parents separated when she was six years old, her sister moved in with an aunt, her brother moved in with their father, and she continued to live with her mother. Later, Clarkson’s mother wed Jimmy Taylor. Clarkson has ancestors from England, Wales, Ireland, and Greece.

Clarkson’s episode of Who Do You Think You Are? from 2013 featured Isaiah Rose, a Republican state legislator, whose life story was explored. Her mother is a decedent of Rose. Clarkson was brought up as a Southern Baptist. I always grew up in the church, she has stated. I served as our youth group’s leader. I always had a good relationship with God and the church growing up. But, I believe that I have simply grown closer to Him because He is the only one I can rely on.  “My family was really traditional; I had to go to church on Sunday and Wednesday,” she subsequently recalled of her childhood.

Clarkson attended Pauline Hughes Middle School for his education. Cynthia Glenn, the choir instructor at the school, overheard her singing in a hallway in the seventh grade and invited her to try out for the chorus. She never received any formal vocal training, according to Clarkson.  In 2000, Clarkson graduated from Burleson High School, where she appeared in a number of musicals including Brigadoon, Annie Get Your Gun, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Clarkson began voice lessons in the hopes of obtaining a music scholarship for college.

Clarkson turned down full scholarships to the University of Texas, University of North Texas, and Berklee College of Music after graduating from high school. I’d already composed so much music, so I wanted to try on my own, she said when she denied them. I also believed that you can never be too old to attend college.  She took on multiple jobs to pay for a demo, recording songs and pitching it to record labels, but she got little interest. Jive Records and Interscope Records offered Clarkson two recording deals, but she declined both of them because she believed she would be labelled as a bubblegum act.

I had enough faith that a better opportunity would present itself.  She moved to Los Angeles in 2001 to pursue a career in music. She temporarily collaborated with guitarist Gerry Goffin to record five demo tracks in an attempt to land a record deal, and she made appearances as an extra in several television series, including Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and Dharma & Greg. As she was rejected by nearly every US record label for sounding “too black,” Clarkson claims that her early attempts to establish her music career failed.  In order to support herself, Clarkson moved back to Texas, where she promoted Red Bull energy drinks, worked as a telemarketing, and served drinks in a comedy club due to a lack of other employment prospects and a fire incident in her apartment.

For her third studio album, My December, Clarkson had even more creative control by co-writing every song and serving as the album’s executive producer. The heavier rock music on the album, however, disappointed her label, and it was reluctantly pushed. All I Ever Wanted and Stronger, Clarkson’s fourth and fifth studio albums, respectively, reverted to a lighter mood and pop rock sound. The former became her second US number-one album, and the latter made her the first performer to win the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album twice.

Both of her albums produced a Hot 100 number-one song: “Stronger,” which went on to become her best-selling single globally, and “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which holds the record for the chart’s largest rise to number one in history. With Wrapped in Red, Clarkson later had the best-selling Christmas album of the year. The ASCAP named its track, “Underneath the Tree,” the most well-known Christmas song released in the twenty-first century. Piece by Piece, her seventh studio album, debuted at number one in the US, while its title tune made the top ten. Meaning of Life, Clarkson’s eighth album with a soulful flavour, and When Christmas Comes Around, her second Christmas album, were both released after she parted ways with RCA and signed with Atlantic in 2016.
