Who is Kellita Smith?

Williamena Kwapo is my name. I’m a second-year Berkeley Journalism student studying short form video, and I feel tremendously privileged to serve as your MC today. So sweet of you. Okay, so a lot of people’s assistance was required to make this event possible. Now that I’ve thanked them, I want you to take a moment to unwind, take a deep breath, and cooperate with me while I continue. OK? I’m good. More gratitude.

In particular, I would like to thank the American Culture Center, the Department of African American Studies, the History Department, the American Studies Department, the Othering and Belonging Institute of the School of Public Health, and the… You guys don’t have to applaud each time they finish. I’m grateful. The Department of Gender & Women’s Studies, the American Cultural Center, and the… I definitely get a cheer for that one. and the programme in ethnic studies. All of you are appreciated. Okay, so after Ericka, Judy, and Madalynn speak, there will be a Q & A session. After the Q and A with our moderator, we’ll pass around a microphone for anyone who wants to ask them a question.

It is now appropriate to discuss Comrade Sisters. I’d want to start by extending a warm welcome to Stephen Shames, co-author of Comrade Sisters: Women of the Black Panther Party and photographer. Prior to Stephen, a brief introduction. Stephen Shames used photography to draw attention to social issues, with an emphasis on racial inequality and child poverty in particular.

40 significant museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, have permanent collections of Steve’s images. Power to the People: The World of the Black Panthers, Bronx Boys, and Outside the Dream are just a few of Steve’s 15 monographs. He has won many honours, including the Kodak Crystal Eagle Award for Outside the Dream’s impact on photojournalism. Steve was listed among the top 15 underestimated photographers by American Photo. PBS also gave Shames… among two other names.

A big thank you to Waldo Martin, a history professor at UC, for his assistance in contacting so many school departments and securing their sponsorship, which made this event possible. I’m grateful, Waldo.Last but not least, I want to thank the Berkeley journalism students who are ushering and helping out today. I want to express my gratitude to the instructors and staff that worked diligently behind the scenes to make this occasion possible. Please accept my sincere gratitude.

Hello. The event is presented by the UC Berkeley chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists with assistance from the Reva and David Logan Gallery of Documentary Photography in the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Professor Lisa Armstrong serves as the academic adviser for the NABJ, while Professor Ken Light, the Reva and David Logan Professor of photojournalism at the Berkeley School of Journalism, serves as the faculty advisor for this event.

The Picture Vision Endowment and AAC Art Books, the company that published Comrade Sisters, both contributed to the success of this occasion. We would especially like to extend our gratitude to Jonathan Logan, the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, and the Reva and David Logan Foundation for their support of this event through the endowed funding of the Berkeley photojournalism programme and Reva and David Logan Gallery of Documentary Photography.

Stephen Shames will exhibit some incredibly touching photographs to start off the evening, which will be followed by a spirited discussion between Ericka Huggins, Madalynn Rucker, and Judy Juanita Hart.Sadly, beloved novelist, academic, and activist Angela Davis was unable to join us tonight as scheduled. Hence, our very own Corey Antonio Rose, an audio journalist and co-chair of the UC Berkeley Society of Black Journalists, will moderate the discussion between the powerful ladies of the Black Panther Party.

We are aware that Black women’s contributions to the struggle for social justice far too frequently go unacknowledged. Women made up to than six out of ten Panther Party members, and via community building and organising, they all served as the movement’s backbone. Shames and Huggins’ work depicts the lives of these women and the crucial labour they performed for the community through personal images. By showcasing their contributions and holding events like these, we hope to enhance the story of the part Black women have played and continue to play in realising and advancing the future we want.
