It is now appropriate to discuss Comrade Sisters. I’d want to start by extending a warm welcome to Stephen Shames, co-author of Comrade Sisters: Women of the Black Panther Party and photographer. Prior to Stephen, a brief introduction. Stephen Shames used photography to draw attention to social issues, with an emphasis on racial inequality and child poverty in particular.

40 significant museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, have permanent collections of Steve’s images. Power to the People: The World of the Black Panthers, Bronx Boys, and Outside the Dream are just a few of Steve’s 15 monographs. He has won many honours, including the Kodak Crystal Eagle Award for Outside the Dream’s impact on photojournalism. Steve was listed among the top 15 underestimated photographers by American Photo. PBS also gave Shames… among two other names.

Hence, our very own Corey Antonio Rose, an audio journalist and co-chair of the UC Berkeley Society of Black Journalists, will moderate the discussion between the powerful ladies of the Black Panther Party.

We are aware that Black women’s contributions to the struggle for social justice far too frequently go unacknowledged. Women made up to than six out of ten Panther Party members, and via community building and organising, they all served as the movement’s backbone. Shames and Huggins’ work depicts the lives of these women and the crucial labour they performed for the community through personal images. By showcasing their contributions and holding events like these, we hope to enhance the story of the part Black women have played and continue to play in realising and advancing the future we want.
