Who is Kathryn Bigelow?

Filmmaker Kathryn  Bigelow hails from the United States. Her films span a variety of genres and include Detroit, The Hurt Locker, The Hurt Locker (2008), Point Break, Strange Days , Near Dark, and Point Break . The only child of librarian Gertrude Kathryn  and paint factory manager Ronald Elliot Bigelow, Bigelow was born in San Carlos, California. Her mother was a native of Norway.

Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, California, was where she studied. The Set-Up, a 20-minute critique of violence in movies, is a short film by Bigelow. Two guys are seen fighting in the movie while Marshall Blonsky and Sylvère Lotringer analyse the sights in the voice-over.  During the film’s all-night production, Bigelow instructed her performers to assault and batter one another physically.

Blue Steel, Point Break, and Strange Days, three of Bigelow’s later works, “merged her philosophically oriented manipulation of speed with the business requirements of popular film-making.” Her ex-husband James Cameron wrote the script and oversaw production for Bigelow’s 1995 picture Strange Days. The movie was a critical and financial flop despite some favourable reviews. Furthermore, Bigelow’s apparent effect on the movie was minimised since many credited Cameron with the original concept.

In the movie Blue Steel, Ron Silver plays a psychotic murderer who is stalking Jamie Lee Curtis’ character, a rookie police officer. Eric Red co-wrote the script alongside Near Dark. Due to cost constraints and the fact that Bigelow “doesn’t like movies where you see a poverty flat and it’s the size of two football fields,” the $10 million film was filmed entirely on site in New York. In 1997 and 1998, she oversaw the direction of three episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street.

Bigelow’s 2000 movie The Weight of Water, based on Anita Shreve’s book of the same name, is a picture of two women imprisoned in oppressive relationships. She was the director of the 2002 film K-19: The Widowmaker, starring Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson and centred on a crew of men onboard the first nuclear-powered submarine of the Soviet Union. Critics reacted differently to the movie, and it did badly at the box office.

Following Blue Steel, Bigelow directed the cult favourite Point Break , starring Keanu Reeves as an FBI agent posing as a surfer to capture the “Ex-Presidents,” a group of surfing armed robbers headed by Patrick Swayze who steal banks while wearing Reagan, Nixon, LBJ, and Jimmy Carter masks. Point Break was Bigelow’s most successful “studio” picture, earning almost $80 million at the year of its release. Yet, it continues to get the lowest ratings, both in critical and popular reviews. Critics said that it mostly abandoned the aesthetic depth and subtext of Bigelow’s prior works and that it adhered to some of the outdated clichés and stereotypes of the action genre.

The Loveless, a motorcycle movie she co-directed with Monty Montgomery, was her debut full-length picture. Willem Dafoe played his first leading role in it.Her next film, Near Dark, which she co-wrote with Eric Red, was directed by her. She started her lifelong passion with bending genre and norms in movies with this one.Three performers who have starred in the movie Aliens were among the core cast.  The same year, she was the director of a parody glam metal music video for the New Order song “Touched by the Hand of God.”

Bigelow’s first artistic pursuits were as a painter-student. She enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute in the autumn of 1970, and in December 1972 she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. She was admitted into the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City when she was a student at SFAI. Bigelow resided in the loft of performance artist Vito Acconci for a spell while sharing housing with painter Julian Schnabel. She had a little part in the film Prisoner’s Dilemma by Richard Serra. Bigelow and Philip Glass collaborated on a real estate project where they repaired run-down apartments in the city centre and then sold them for a profit.

Bigelow enrolled at Columbia University’s graduate film programme, where she studied theory and criticism and received her master’s degree. She studied under Vito Acconci, Sylvère Lotringer, Susan Sontag, Andrew Sarris, Edward W. Said, and collaborated with Lawrence Weiner as well as the Art & Language group.

At the California Institute of the Arts, she also taught.  In the short-lived Art & Language magazine The Fox while she was employed there, Bigelow wrote an article titled “Not on the Development of Contradiction” and started work on the short film The Set-Up, which Milo Forman, who was teaching at Columbia University at the time, liked and which Bigelow later submitted as a component of her MFA at Columbia, accepted.

With The Hurt Locker, Bigelow became the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar, Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing, and BAFTA Award for Best Direction. With Strange Days, she became the first female director to get the Saturn Award for Best Director. She was also included among the top 100 important persons in the world by Time magazine in 2010.
