Who is Katherine Langford?

Actress Katherine Langford was born in Australia on April 29, 1996. Her breakout role as Hannah Baker in the Netflix television series 13 Reasons Why, which won her a Golden Globe Award nomination, came after she had roles in a number of small films.  She then went on to feature in the Netflix series Cursed as well as the movies Love, Simon, Knives Out, and Spontaneous, for which she was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Super Award. Langford was reared in Applecross, a riverfront suburb of Perth, and was born in Perth, Western Australia.

She is the oldest child of paediatrician Elizabeth Langford  and flying physician Stephen Langford, who serves as the head of medical services for the Western Operations of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Josephine Langford, her younger sister, is a performer. Langford initially had an appearance in a number of minor indie movies, such as Daughter, Imperfect Quadrant, and Story of Miss Oxygen.

She played the title role in the 2016 Cannes film festival entry Daughter.  After rejecting the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts’ invitation, Langford appeared in an audition for the TV series Will in 2016, which focused on the early years of William Shakespeare. She was not given the part. In the murder mystery movie Knives Out, Langford co-starred in 2019. She was a part of many honours and nominations for the role, including a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Cast, and the ensemble cast garnered favourable reviews.

She appeared in the well-received dark comedy Spontaneous in 2020, for which she was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Super Award for Best Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie. The online television series Cursed cast Langford, it was revealed on September 12th, 2018. Langford plays Nimue, a young woman destined to become the Lady of the Lake, in this reimagined Arthurian universe. In July 2020, Netflix hosted its debut.

After that, Langford was given the role of Hannah Baker in the mystery adolescent drama TV show 13 Reasons Why, where she appeared for the first two seasons. Since she had never worked in the US before, she only had 10 days after accepting the position to get an O-1 visa. She interviewed an adolescent psychiatrist and a representative of the “It’s On Us” sexual assault awareness campaign as part of her research for the part.  Numerous reviewers praised her portrayal of Baker; The Hollywood Reporter stated: “Because of Langford’s painful candour, you find yourself hoping for a result that isn’t likely to happen.

The actress’ portrayal has a wide variety of dynamics, which contrasts with Minnette’s often more challenging duty of distinguishing between emotions that typically range from unpleasant to depressing to red-eyed, hygiene-deprived despair.”  She received several honours and accolades for the part, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Dramatic Television Series.  On May 25, 2018, Langford announced that she will not reprise her role as Hannah Baker for the show’s third season.

She joined the William Morris Endeavor agency in December 2016. She then had an appearance in Shannon Alexander’s indie comedy-drama The Misguided, which debuted in January 2018.  Additionally, she played Leah in the 2018 movie Love, Simon. She was given a part in Avengers: Endgame in October 2018. However, her parts were removed from the finished movie because test audiences thought her sequence needed to be clarified.

In 2005, Langford started taking voice lessons with Heidi Lake. She studied jazz, classical, and modern vocal styles. She received a scholarship to attend Perth Modern School during her senior high school years, where she studied music and acting and competed as a nationally rated swimmer in addition to being the sports captain.

Langford first considered studying medicine and politics in addition to musical theatre while she was in high school. When Langford was a teenager, she went to the Born This Way Ball, a Lady Gaga event, which gave her the idea to start studying the piano.  She posted videos of herself performing the songs “I’ve Got a Crush on Zoe Bosch,” “Young and Stupid,” and “3 Words,” three of her own compositions.

She penned the anti-suicide song “Young and Stupid” in 2013 after three Perth teenagers committed themselves.  Langford decided to give up swimming and devote her last year at Perth Modern to music and performance.  She achieved victory in many musical and dramatic contests. Langford graduated in 2013 and had an appearance in the school’s production of Hotel Sorrento.

Langford majored in music theatre at the Principal Academy of Dance & Theatre Arts from 2014 to 2015 and performed in a Godspell play. The National Institute of Dramatic Art  Advanced Actors Residency in 2015 chose her as one of five students to attend. Langford also received a place in the Western Australian Academy of Programming.  She received her training at Nicholson’s Academy of Screen Acting the same year, and in its 2015 production of Evita, she played Juan Perón’s mistress.
