This was followed by a minor part in the drama Kissing a Fool, which was filmed in Chicago. In Darren Stein’s black comedy Jawbreaker, she was given her first starring part as Fern Mayo, a geeky adolescent who discovers her classmates’ friend’s death. The movie eventually developed a cult following . Greer then had modest roles in the romantic comedies What Women Want  and The Wedding Planner as a result of this. She and Stephen Colbert were cast in the Untitled Ken Finkleman Project, a 2002 NBC pilot that was based on Ken Finkleman’s Canadian television programme The Newsroom. Greer played Finkleman’s sister, and Colbert played Finkleman.

The Boston Globe’s Ty Burr referred to the movie as “an actor’s playpen” and observed that Greer “tears into this part – a smart, loving mother afraid of her own son – as if it were prime rib” since she had “been confined so long in silly supporting roles.”  Greer then had an appearance in the drama In Memory of My Father before making an appearance in Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Alec Baldwin, and Susan Sarandon’s tragic-romantic comedy Elizabethtown directed by Cameron Crowe. Critics gave the movie poor ratings after its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
