English actor Jonathan Bailey was born on April 25, 1988[1]. He has won a Laurence Olivier Award and been nominated for an Evening Standard Theatre Award. He is recognised for his humorous, dramatic, and musical performances on stage and cinema. Jonathan Stuart Bailey was born on April 25, 1988, in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, to a mother who is an audiologist and a managing director of Rowse Honey. The youngest of four children and the only boy, he was raised in the nearby community of Benson.  He spoke of having “a co-operative of four intelligent women and a dad who has a fantastic work ethic” as his upbringing.  After his grandmother took him to attend a performance of Oliver! by Lionel Bart in London when he was five, Bailey made the decision that he wanted to be an actor.

In a primary school production of Noah’s Ark, he made his debut on stage as a raindrop.  At the age of seven, Bailey used his dance studio in Henley-on-Thames to audition for and secure the alternating parts of Tiny Tim and Young Scrooge in the 1995 RSC production of A Christmas Carol at the Barbican Theatre in London. On his audition, he performed “Where Is Love?” from Oliver! He made his television début in the Victorian era drama Bramwell the following year. In the RSC’s 1996 production of Les Enfants du Paradis, Bailey also played Little Baptiste.

He was playing Gavroche in a West End performance of Les Misérables by the age of eight. In the 2011 CBBC action-adventure series Leonardo, which follows a young Leonardo and his companions in 15th-century Florence, Bailey portrayed the titular Leonardo da Vinci. The programme produced an online game, ran for two seasons, and won four KidScreen Awards.   In the same year, he played Flatpack, a student athlete with Olympic potential, in the comedy Campus, a semi-improvised sitcom.

Bailey’s performance in David Hare’s well-received production South Downs at the Minerva Theatre in 2011 and its subsequent move to the Harold Pinter Theatre the following year earned him a nomination for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards.According to The Telegraph, he is one of “the brightest up-and-coming actors now playing on the West End stage” and a future star. He also starred as the popstar Tom in the Disney Channel musical comedy Groove High, which ran for 26 episodes from 2012 to 2013. The show featured a mix of live action and animation, and Bailey sang and provided the voiceover for the animated version of his character.

Bailey performed the role of Prince Arthur in the RSC’s King John in 2001. In 2004, he made his big-screen debut in the fantasy version of E. Nesbit’s book of the same name, Five Children and It. On the day of his final A level exams in 2006, he began practising for a London revival of the play Beautiful Thing, replacing Andrew Garfield in the title role.  According to The Telegraph, Bailey “memorably lighted up” the play. This was followed by cameo appearances in enduring favourites of British television including Doctors and The Bill.  In the 2009 BBC sitcom Off the Hook about a group of university freshmen, he played the show’s first major lead.

Bailey studied at The Oratory School while taking dance classes and later pursued piano and clarinet studies at Magdalen College School in Oxford while receiving a music scholarship. He eventually turned down his university acceptance offer and decided not to attend theatre school after signing with a talent agent at the age of 15 and landing acting roles, Later claiming that it helped him stay grounded in the performing arts,  “I’ve never entered a situation as the overdog, and I don’t want that to ever change because it’s liberating. I simply want to let my personal experiences shine through.”

By the age of eight, Bailey was playing Gavroche in a West End production of Les Misérables. Bailey began his his career as a child actor in Royal Shakespeare Company plays. Since then, he has appeared in modern plays like South Downs in 2012, The York Realist in 2018, and Cock in 2022, as well as classic plays like Othello at the Royal National Theatre in 2013 and King Lear at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2017. He has also appeared in musicals like the London revival of The Last Five Years in 2016 and the gender-flipped West End production of Company, for which he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical.

Before becoming well-known for his roles in the ITV crime drama Broadchurch, the BBC satire W1A, and the Channel 4 comedy Crashing, Bailey first gained recognition for his roles in the CBBC action-adventure series Leonardo and the Disney Channel musical-comedy Groove High.
