Who is John Cho?
John Cho, an American actor best known for playing Hikaru Sulu in the rebooted Star Trek film series and Harold Lee in the Harold & Kumar movies, was born Cho Yo-Han on June 16, 1972. Cho, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, immigrated to the US in 1978. His family chose Los Angeles as their new home after residing in Houston, Seattle, Daly City, Monterey Park, and other cities in California. His father was from North Korea and served as a minister in the Church of Christ. He had just one younger sibling when he was growing up. Cho earned his high school diploma from Glendale, California’s Herbert Hoover High School in 1990. Cho taught literature in English after graduating. Actor at East West Players in downtown Los Angeles while attending Pacific Hills School in West Hollywood, California.
He had two appearances there: in the 1996 movie The Taste of Kona Coffee by Edward Sakamoto and in the 2000 movie My Tired Broke Ass Pontificating Slapstick Funk by Euijoon Kim. Harold Lee was played by Cho in the 2004 film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Cho returned to the role in the 2008 film Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, which brought in $38 million at the box office, and in the 2011 film A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, which brought in $35 million.
Cho’s part in the well-known franchise was created especially for him by writer Hayden Schlossberg, and Cho has recalled that he was originally dubious when Schlossberg first approached him with the part. Cho joined the Ugly Betty roster as a recurrent character in 2007. Henry Grubstick’s best friend, played by Cho, is Kenny. In Star Trek, directed by J. J. Abrams, Cho portrayed captain Hikaru Sulu. He was complimented by Manohla Dargis of The New York Times for “ultimately and very magnificently own” in his performance.
Together with other famous people, Cho starred in Nas’ “Be a Nigger Too” music video. He also made a cameo on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother in the episode “I’m Not That Man,” where he played a partner in a wicked legal practise. Cho was described as “the scene stealer in this episode” by Staci Krause of IGN, who added that she would “certainly like to see more of him” in the series. In the TV show FlashForward from 2009 to 2010, Cho played FBI Special Agent Demetri Noh. His role as Sulu in Star Trek increased his fame, and the producers changed the show’s plot so that he lived in an effort to raise the show’s dwindling ratings. His character was initially intended to be killed off during what ended up being the show’s sole season.
Cho made an appearance in the July 2004 issue of KoreAm Journal and was cast in the NBC sitcom The Singles Table in September 2006, but the show was cancelled owing to scheduling and production issues. Cho was chosen as one of People magazine’s sexiest men alive in 2006 and again in 2009.Cho rose to fame for his brief appearance as “MILF Man #2” in the 1999 comedy American Pie, which is credited with popularising the abbreviation MILF.
In the three follow-up films, American Pie 2, American Wedding, and the most recent one, American Reunion, in which he plays a considerably larger role, Cho reprised the character. His character didn’t have a name at first, but in the third movie, Cho himself gave him the name “John.”
In the 1998 Charmed episode “Dead Man Dating,” Cho made a brief appearance as a ghost. From 2001 to 2002, Cho starred in the brief run of the situation comedy Off Centre. He starred in the Fox comedy Kitchen Confidential, which was based on Anthony Bourdain’s best-selling book of the same name. He appeared in supporting roles in Ivan Reitman’s science fiction comedy Evolution, Down to Earth, and Bowfinger.
Better Luck Tomorrow, a drama about the struggles of a group of Asian Americans living in Southern California who are academically successful but socially dissatisfied, and as a result engage in willfully violent, illegal activity, starred Cho in the ensemble cast in 2002. The New York Times’ Elvis Mitchell praised it, characterising Cho’s role as having a “lazy magnetism of which he is sweetly aware.” Later same year, Cho starred as a Hong Kong-based film director in the movie Big Fat Liar. He objected to adopting the accent that was written for his persona. He and the director collaborated to rework the part.
Cho studied at Berkeley’s University of California. He made a nationwide tour in 1994 for the Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s stage version of Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in English literature in 1996. In the early years of his acting career, Cho also appeared in the Asian American-focused movies Better Luck Tomorrow, Yellow, and Shopping for Fangs. He won praise from critics in 2017 for his role in the well-received independent movie Columbus. He became the first Asian American actor to lead a mainstream thriller movie in Hollywood history when he starred in the thriller Searching in 2018. For his work in Searching, he received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.
In addition, when he played Henry Higgs in the 2014 sitcom Selfie, he became the first Asian-American actor to be chosen as the romantic lead in a romantic comedy series on American television in the twenty-first century. Cho has had lead roles in series including FlashForward and Off Centre, as well as recurring roles in Go On, Sleepy Hollow, and Difficult People, in addition to his role in Selfie.
