Who is John Barrowman?

John Barrowman MBE, a Scottish-American actor, author, presenter, musician, and creator of comic books, was born on March 11, 1967. He is well-known for playing Malcolm Merlyn in the Arrowverse as well as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and Torchwood. In addition, Barrowman appears on more than 12 musical theatre records, including cover songs from his albums Another Side from 2007 and Music Music Music from 2008. His two albums, as well as his self-titled John Barrowman, which peaked at No. 11, his greatest chart position to date, all earned spots on the UK Albums Chart. He collaborated with his older sister Carole to write two memoirs and autobiographies, Anything Goes  and I Am What I Am .

The twins have collaborated to write the Hollow Earth series of young-adult fantasy books. Bone Quill, the second book in the series, was published in 2013, and Book of Beasts, the third, was released in 2014. Conjuror, released in 2016, Nephilim, released in 2017, and Inquisitor, released in 2018, made up the second trilogy, The Orion Chronicles. The youngest of three children, John Scot Barrowman was born on March 11, 1967, in Mount Vernon, Glasgow. Carole, his older sister, went on to become a professor at a university. For the first eight years of his life, he resided in Glasgow.

His father worked for the Caterpillar heavy machinery firm in the nearby Uddingston, while his mother was a vocalist who also owned a record store. His father oversaw the Caterpillar tractor manufacturing in Aurora, Illinois, therefore the family was moved there in 1975 by his father’s business.  After settling in Joliet, Illinois, the family sent Barrowman to Joliet West High School, located in the centre of a “typically middle-class, conservative community.”

His high school English and music professors encouraged him to reach his full artistic potential, and his music tutor instilled in him a love for performance. These two teachers fundamentally altered the trajectory of his life. His English teacher trained him for the school’s speech team and pushed him into a programme for exceptional kids. He participated in statewide speech competitions with other schools with the help of his teacher, where he improved his reading of play excerpts.

Barrowman developed a general American accent that also had a trace of a Mid-Atlantic accent as a result of his classmates making fun of his native Scottish dialect. He was cast in multiple musical plays as a freshman, appearing in Oliver!, Camelot, Hello, Dolly!, Li’l Abner, and Anything Goes between 1983 and 1986. Anthony Rapp and Andy Dick were two of his high school classmates who were also involved in theatre.  Barrowman apparently has a close friendship with Rapp.

Barrowman has said that he “would not today be appearing in royal command performances in the West End in front of the Royal Family or having Stephen Sondheim invite  to play opposite Carol Burnett” if it weren’t for the encouragement he received in high school.  Barrowman worked as a coal shoveler for an Illinois power plant during his senior year. To offer him experience with manual labour, his father set up the employment. His father informed him, “You’ll be able to tell when you do it; it’s a decision if you want to perform manual labour for the rest of your life. But if you don’t enjoy it, you’ll realise how important it is to educate yourself and, if you determine what you want to do, to be skilled at it.” Despite not like the job, Barrowman spent the entire summer working for the power company. He eventually succeeded in persuading the business to transfer him to the storeroom.

Barrowman was raised in Glasgow until his family relocated to Illinois when he was eight years old. He attended the United States International University in San Diego after being encouraged to do so by his high school instructors there, majoring in performing arts, before being cast as Billy Crocker in Cole Porter’s Anything Goes in the West End of London. He has since made his Broadway and West End debuts in a number of musicals, including Matador, The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, and Miss Saigon.

He was nominated for a 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical after participating in Sam Mendes’ production of The Fix. In the early 2000s, he played Billy Crocker again in the revival of Anything Goes. His most recent West End credit was in the 2009 production of La Cage aux Folles.

Along with his acting career, Barrowman has participated in movies like The Producers and the musical biopic De-Lovely. He appeared in the American television dramas Titans and Central Park West before making the transition to British television, but he is best known for his acting and presenting work for the BBC, which includes his early work for CBBC, his own entertainment programme Tonight’s the Night, and his BAFTA Cymru-nominated performance as Captain Jack Harkness in the 2005 revival of the science fiction series Doctor Who and its spinoff Torchwood. In both the US and the UK, Barrowman has played a variety of supporting roles in television series.

In addition to competing on the first season of the celebrity ice dancing competition Dancing on Ice, he also served as a judge on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical talent competitions How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, Any Dream Will Do, and I’d Do Anything thanks to his theatrical training. With this background, he was invited to join the Dancing on Ice judging panel for the 2020–2021 season. He received the Stonewall Entertainer of the Year award in 2006. In 2013 and 2014, he served as host of the BBC One quiz programme Pressure Pad. Malcolm Merlyn was played by Barrowman in the CW shows Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.
