Who is Joe Mullen ?
Mullen, Joseph Patrick (born February 26, 1957), is a retired professional ice hockey player from the United States. Between 1980 and 1997, he played for the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL). With the Flames in 1989 and the Penguins in 1991 and 1992, he was a member of three Stanley Cup championship teams.
Mullen began coaching in 2000, first as an assistant in Pittsburgh and then as the head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a brief period of time. From 2007 through 2017, he worked as a coach for the Philadelphia Flyers.Mullen was an all-star with the Boston College Eagles before joining the Blues’ organisation as an undrafted free agent.
As a member of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the Central Hockey League (CHL), he was voted rookie of the year in 1980 and most valuable player in 1981. As a member of the Flames, he received the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy twice as the league’s most gentlemanly player, as well as the NHL Plus-Minus Award on two occasions. Mullen was a member of the 1988–89 NHL First All-Star Team and appeared in three All-Star Games.
Mullen has participated in three Canada Cup competitions with the United States National Team. In his career, he was the first American player to score 500 goals and 1,000 points. In 1995, Mullen was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for his achievements to American sport. In 1998, he was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Mullen was born on February 26, 1957, in New York, New York, and grew up in the Gambino-controlled Hell’s Kitchen district of Manhattan. It was a difficult neighbourhood; Mullen later said that many of the individuals he grew up with became involved in gangs and drug addiction, and that some of them died before reaching the age of 21.
Ken, Tom Jr., and Brian are his three brothers, while Debbie is his sister. Joe’s father, Tom, was a long-time employee on the ice and maintenance staffs at Madison Square Garden, and the Mullens resided less than a block away. Joe and his siblings used to hang out with their father at the arena, playing with old sticks.
He started playing roller hockey at the age of five, using a sanded down roll of electrical tape as a puck and playing on a concrete schoolyard. Emile Francis, the general manager of the New York Rangers, was partly inspired by the boys’ playground activities when he founded the Metropolitan Junior Hockey Association in 1966.
Mullen did not begin to skate until he was ten years old, yet he joined the Metropolitan Association as one of the league’s youngest players at the age of fourteen. Between 1971 and 1975, Mullen spent four years in the league. In 1973–74, he had 71 goals and 182 points in 40 games, then in 1974–75, he had 71 goals and 182 points in 40 games.
Mullen had 52 more goals than his nearest rival in 1974–75, with 110. Mullen entered the NHL with excellent skating balance, which his teammates and coaches attributed to his roller hockey experience. His coaches appreciated his determination to play in the most difficult parts of the ice, despite his little stature and the fact that he would have to take a hit to make a play.
Mullen was dubbed “Slippery Rock Joe” by Pittsburgh Penguins play-by-play announcer Mike Lange because of his ability to elude opponents. Mullen was the first American player in NHL history to score 500 goals and 1,000 points, and his totals of 502 goals and 1,063 points remained American records until they were eclipsed by Mike Modano and Phil Housley.
Mullen received the Lester Patrick Award for his achievements to hockey in the United States in 1995, along with his brother Brian. In 1998, he was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame, the Pittsburgh Penguins Hall of Fame, and the Hockey Hall of Fame two years later. Four players who wore uniform number 7 for the St. Louis Blues were honoured in 2011.
The ceremony honoured Mullen, Red Berenson, Garry Unger, and Keith Tkachuk. Mullen began his coaching career in 2000, when he joined Ivan Hlinka’s Penguins’ coaching team as an assistant. When Hlinka was sacked a year later, he was replaced by Rick Kehoe, who was then replaced by Ed Olczyk.
When the Penguins fired Olczyk and his whole staff midway through the 2005–06 NHL season, Mullen was fired. He was, however, retained by the organisation and named interim head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for the balance of the AHL season. Mullen has a 28-win, 16-loss, 3-tie, and 5-overtime loss record in 52 games.
After the season, the Penguins decided not to keep Mullen. He then went to work for Pittsburgh’s cross-state rival, the Philadelphia Flyers, first as an assistant with the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms in 2006–07and then as a member of the NHL team in 2007. Mullen was a member of the coaching staff when the team reached the 2010 Stanley Cup Final and coached the team’s power play.
He stayed on the Flyers’ coaching staff until the end of the 2016–17 campaign. Mullen and his wife Linda have four children: Ryan, Michael, and Patrick are males, while Erin is a daughter. Patrick also plays ice hockey professionally. For the 2013–14 season, he inked a deal with the Ottawa Senators.
