Who is Joanne Froggatt?

Joanne Froggatt is a British actress who was born on August 23, 1980. She played Anna Bates in the ITV historical drama series Downton Abbey from 2010 to 2015. She won the 2014 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series for her role, for which she garnered three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She acted in the ITV drama series Liar from 2017 to 2020. In the North Yorkshire village of Littlebeck, Froggatt was both born and raised. After operating a corner store, her parents Ann and Keith Froggatt then established a rare-breed sheep farm on a smallholding close to Whitby.

Joanne has compared the environment of her early years to that of Emily Bronte’s well-known book Wuthering Heights.  Froggatt first joined a theatre company in Scarborough before relocating to Maidenhead, Berkshire, at the age of 13 to enrol in the Redroofs Theatre School. In the enduring ITV drama The Bill, Froggatt had her television debut in 1996. Soon after, she was cast as teenage mother Zoe Tattersall in Coronation Street. When her role was deleted in 1998, she quit the show.  She played the role of teenage mother Rachel Hicks in the first four episodes of the Bad Girls prison drama’s first season in 1999.

Froggatt portrayed the title character in the divisive one-off drama Danielle Cable: Eyewitness in 2003. The film was based on the true account of a teenage girl who saw her boyfriend killed in an alleged act of road rage. She met Cable while doing research for the part, and he later got in touch with her to give her praise for the play. The movie received a nomination for Best Single Drama at the BAFTA TV Awards.

In the ITV miniseries Island at War, which chronicles the German conquest of the Channel Islands, Froggatt plays the part of Angelique Mahy. It premiered on July 11, 2004. She portrayed Myra in Monica Dickens’ My Turn to Make the Tea on BBC Radio 4 that same year. Alongside Gregor Fisher, Froggatt played the lead role in the drama Missing, which SMG Productions released in 2006. Because Missing had two 90-minute time slots and ITV having switched to 60-minute time slots, the two-part drama was not broadcast on STV until November 2008.

Froggatt portrayed Myra Hindley’s sister in the ITV drama See No Evil: The Moors Murders in 2006. Later, she played the lead in the contentious television series Joanne Lees: Murder in the Outback, which premiered on Channel Ten in Australia on March 18, 2007, and debuted on ITV in Britain on April 8, 2007.  In order to play the part, which required portraying a real-life kidnapping, Froggatt had to act out sequences while gagged by having tape wrapped around her mouth. She played Sister Rosa in the adaption of All About My Mother on the London stage, which performed at the Old Vic Theatre from July to November 2007.

Kate, a peasant, was represented by Froggatt in the third season of the BBC television series Robin Hood. She appeared in the BBC Radio production of Solaris as Rheya and as Hannah in Spooks: Code 9. She played Kelly in the BBC drama Moving On in May 2009. Froggatt performed the title part in the BBC Radio Four production I Am Emma Humphreys on September 25, 2009. Froggatt performed the role of Princess Yvonne in the BBC Radio Four Saturday production of The Von Trapps and Me on October 3, that same year.

Froggatt and Lee Ingleby starred together on April 15, 2010, in Peter Walley’s The Disappearance for BBC Radio 4. Froggatt played Suzy, a soldier with post-traumatic stress disorder, in her debut movie, In Our Name. She received favourable reviews for her portrayal and the British Independent Film Awards’ Best Newcomer honour.

Coronation Street, Bad Girls, dinnerladies, and A Touch of Frost are just a few of Froggatt’s early television performances. Before earning the British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer for her major role in the 2010 film In Our Name, she went on to feature in the television movies Danielle Cable: Eyewitness, See No Evil: The Moors Murders, and Murder in the Outback.
