Who is Joan Rivers?

Joan Alexandra Molinsky, better known by her stage name Joan Rivers, was an American comedian, actress, producer, writer, and television host. She was born on June 8, 1933, and she passed away on September 4, 2014. She was renowned for her direct, frequently contentious humorous demeanour, which was delivered in her distinctive New York accent and was extremely self-deprecating and sarcastic, especially against politicians and celebrities. Many commentators regard her as a female comedy pioneer. Rivers published 12 best-selling books and three LP comedy albums under her own name, including Mr. Phyllis and Other Funny Stories, The Next to Last Joan Rivers Album, and What Becomes a Semi-Legend Most? in addition to promoting a line of jewellery and clothing on the QVC shopping channel.

She received a Grammy nomination in 1984 for her album What Becomes a Semi-Legend Most? and a Tony Award nomination in 1994 for Best Actress in a Play for her work as Sally Marr… and Her Escorts’ lead actress. In 2009, Rivers and her daughter Melissa participated in The Celebrity Apprentice’s second season, which they ultimately won. For her book, Diary of a Mad Diva, Rivers got a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album in 2015 after her passing.  Joan Alexandra Molinsky was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 8, 1933. born to Russian-Jewish immigrants Meyer C. Molinsky, a physician, and Beatrice.

She had a sister named Barbara Waxler who was older than her.  Crown Heights and Prospect Heights in Brooklyn are where Rivers spent her formative years. Due to her prior involvement in theatrical activities, she attended the progressive and now-defunct Brooklyn Ethical Culture School and Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn, a college preparation day school, where she served as co-chairman of her school. She participated in the school cavalcades within two years, and at the age of 16, she was vice president of the dramatic club in 1949.

When she was 18 years old, she earned her diploma from Brooklyn’s Adelphi Academy. During her teens, Rivers moved to Larchmont, which is located north of New York City, with her family.  In interviews, Rivers revealed that she suffered with her body image her entire life and that she was overweight throughout her childhood and youth.  In the late 1950s, Rivers made a brief Off-Broadway run of the play Driftwood, which also starred Barbra Streisand. According to an interview with Adweek, it aired on playwright Maurice Tei Dunn’s apartment on 49th Street in NYC for six weeks.

In the early 1960s, Rivers gave performances in a variety of comedy clubs in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighbourhood, including The Bitter End, The Gaslight Cafe, and The Duplex. Woody Allen and George Carlin, two other Greenwich Village comedians who became friends with Rivers, were frequent dining companions. She also talks of working in the Village with famous musicians like Carly Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, Barbra Streisand, and Bob Dylan.  Jim Connell, Jake Holmes, and Joan Rivers performed as “Jim, Jake & Joan” in a cabaret act between 1963 and 1964.

Their inclusion in the film Once Upon A Coffee House, which was also Rivers’ debut on the big screen, was a result of their 1964 performance at The Bitter End. Shortly after, the group split up, and Holmes later reflected on that: “When Bobby Kennedy sought the office of New York senator in 1964, we were meant to hold this rally in his support. We had planned to perform at the event. Joan arrived wearing a button supporting [Republican Senate candidate Kenneth] Keating. Jim commanded, “Take that off.” She responded “no,” remaining true to her political principles. Who needs you anyway, Jim asked? That was the last we saw of Jim, Jake, and Joan “.

She spent two years at Connecticut College before moving to Barnard College, where she earned a BA in anthropology and English literature in 1954. She frequently claimed to have graduated summa cum laude and to be a member of Phi Beta Kappa; however, her biographer discovered that these claims, along with others like sharing a lesbian kiss in a play with Barbra Streisand, were fabrications.

Before going into the entertainment industry, Rivers held a number of positions, including tour guide at Rockefeller Center, writer/proofreader at an advertising agency, and fashion consultant at Bond Clothing Stores.  Tony Rivers, her agent, suggested her to change her name during this time, so she settled on Joan Rivers as her stage name. The television critic for The New York Times Jack Gould referred to Rivers as “very perhaps the most naturally funny lady alive” in 1968.

She was voted sixth among the 50 greatest stand-up comedians of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2017, and in October of that same year, she was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. The documentary Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work features her as its topic.Along with her contemporaries George Carlin, Woody Allen, and Richard Pryor, Rivers began her career in comedy clubs in Greenwich Village.

She then became well-known in 1965 after appearing as a guest on The Tonight Show. The programme, which was hosted by Rivers’ role model Johnny Carson, developed her humorous voice. The first female host of a late-night network television talk show was Joan Rivers in 1986, when she hosted The Late Show with Joan Rivers, a competitor programme. She then served as host of The Joan Rivers Show from 1989 until 1993, earning a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host in the process.

She rose to fame for her humorous celebrity interviews on the red carpet at award shows starting in the mid-1990s. From 2010 to 2014, Rivers co-hosted the E! celebrity fashion show Fashion Police. She also co-starred in the reality series Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? from 2011 to 2014.
