He played Mitchell Pritchett in the comedy Modern Family from 2009 to 2020, for which he received five consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Anne Ferguson and Robert “Bob” Ferguson welcomed Jesse Tyler Ferguson into the world in Missoula, Montana. When he was 18 years old, his parents got divorced. Ben Ferguson is Ferguson’s brother, while Kelly Ferguson is his sister.

Ferguson was given the name Jessie Uppercue Ferguson in honour of his paternal grandmother, with whom he had a close relationship as a child. Jesse was also the name of his paternal great-grandfather. Ferguson mostly performed in Off-Broadway and Broadway productions in New York City, notably the Tony Award-winning production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, in which he created the part of Leaf Coneybear. Ferguson played the title role in both The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Public Theater. He performed the role of Sir Robin in the Hollywood Bowl version of Monty Python’s Spamalot in the summer of 2015.

Ferguson played Dr. Ilan Meyer in a staged reenactment of Perry v. Brown, the federal trial that invalidated California’s Proposition 8 prohibition on same-sex marriage, in March 2012’s production of Dustin Lance Black’s play 8. To collect money for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, a nonprofit group that is supporting the plaintiffs’ legal team and hosting the play, the performance was held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre and webcast on YouTube.  Ferguson played Richie Velch in the short-lived CBS sitcom The Class, which had a sizable ensemble cast.

In the suspense film Untraceable from 2008, Ferguson costarred. Ferguson and his lawyer husband Justin Mikita established the non-profit organisation Tie The Knot in September 2012 in an effort to collect money for same-sex marriage by selling bow ties to retail customers.  In a video posted online, they formally announced it as their engagement while explaining that only seven states at the time permitted same-sex unions.  Ferguson said in an interview that he wanted to start with something simple and controlled in case the economic model didn’t work out.

Limited-edition bow ties are sold by the foundation to benefit groups that support same-sex unions. The Tie Bar, an online retailer of men’s neckwear with headquarters in Naperville, Illinois, sells the couple’s collections in addition to those created by guest designers. Sheila Simon, the lieutenant governor of Illinois, sought out the couple in January 2013 to push lawmakers on behalf of SB10, which would permit same-sex unions.

After being approved by both chambers of the legislature and being signed into law by the governor, Pat Quinn, the legislation became effective on June 1st, 2014. The American Civil Liberties Union designated Ferguson the celebrity spokesman for the LGBT community in October 2013.

He actively took part in the “Out for Freedom” campaign of the ACLU. They observed that Ferguson visited his home state of New Mexico to support same-sex marriage initiatives. The only state without a statute or constitutional provision specifically addressing same-sex marriage prior to the state’s complete legalisation of same-sex marriage on December 19, 2013, New Mexico did not expressly legalise or forbid same-sex marriage.  The couple’s non-profit gave the ACLU of New Mexico a gift of $10,000 USD for same sex initiatives.

The fourth collection by the duo, “Tie The Knot,” incorporating professional athlete designs with Scott Fujita and Chris Kluwe, and Brittney Griner, was on display at a pop-up retail store in November 2013 at the Los Angeles Beverly Center. He portrayed Mitchell Pritchett, the openly homosexual attorney on the ABC sitcom Modern Family, from 2009 until 2020.
