Who is Jess Glynne?

Jessica Hannah Glynne is an English singer and songwriter who was born on October 20, 1989. She gained notoriety in 2014 after signing with Atlantic Records when she was a featured artist on the UK number-one singles “Rather Be” by Clean Bandit and “My Love” by Route 94. In 2019, Forbes magazine listed her as one of the “Most Influential People Under 30.” Jess Glynne was raised in a Jewish family in Muswell Hill, North London, after being born in Hampstead. Alexandra (née Ingram), her mother, worked in A&R for the music business.  Her grandpa changed the family name, which was originally Goldstein, to Glynne.

Glynne completed a month-long music course at Access to Music London in East London, where she made friends with the composer Jin Jin and the producer Bless Beats, with whom she would later collaborate. She attended Westminster University as well. Black Butter Records heard one of Glynne and Jin Jin’s compositions, and they signed her to a publishing contract and introduced her to music managers and attorneys.  Joe Gossa, a co-president of Black Butter, stated of Glynne, “Her voice freaked me out because of its ferocity. She has this amazing ability to discuss common topics “.  She left her position as brand manager for a drinks company in August 2013 after signing a contract with Atlantic Records.

The deep dance producer Route 94 contacted Glynne in 2013 to discuss revising and contributing vocals to his song “My Love.”  Later, it was made available as a single, and it peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart in February 2014. It later received a Platinum certification from the British Phonographic Industry. After hearing “My Love,” the British band Clean Bandit approached Glynne about appearing on their song “Rather Be.”  Jack Patterson of the band remarked that she had “a wonderful subtlety of passion in her voice.”

As the third-fastest-selling single and most-streamed song of 2014, the single from the duet also peaked at the top of the UK charts.  The song peaked at number one and in the top five on charts throughout Europe and Oceania. It also cracked the top ten on the US Billboard Hot 100. At the BRIT Awards, “Rather Be” and “My Love” were both nominated for Best British Single.  Glynne received nominations for Song of the Year at the first BBC Music Awards and won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for her work on “Rather Be.”

Glynne’s debut solo single, “Right Here,” which was created by Gorgon City, was released in July 2014. It made the charts in a variety of nations, peaking at number six in the UK. In the middle of 2014, Glynne performed at a number of British music festivals, including Bestival, Glastonbury, Lovebox, V Festival, and Wireless.  Beginning in Sheffield and concluding at the Electric Brixton in London, she began her UK tour in October 2014. Glynne worked on songwriting collaborations with Little Mix, MO, Rudimental, and Tinie Tempah throughout 2014.  “Real Love,” a second joint effort with Clean Bandit, debuted in November 2014 and peaked at number two in the UK.

“Hold My Hand,” Glynne’s second solo song, was made available in March 2015. It lasted three weeks at the top of the charts in the UK, where it debuted.  Glynne was a featured artist on Tinie Tempah’s song “Not Letting Go,” which was released in June 2015. It also debuted at the top of the UK charts, giving Glynne a total of four UK number one songs. She underwent vocal chord surgery in the middle of 2015, which led to the cancellation of numerous live appearances, including the Glastonbury Festival.

The UK saw the release of Glynne’s debut album I Cry When I Laugh in August 2015, following the success of the number one single “Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself.”  Along with her frequent collaborators Bless Beats and Jin Jin, it also includes contributions from Switch, Talay Riley, Starsmith, Knox Brown, Naughty Boy, and Jin Jin.  I Cry When I Laugh debuted at the top of the UK Albums Chart and was later certified triple Platinum.

When she was 15 years old, she submitted an application for the television programme The X Factor, but she withdrew after having an argument with the producers. She went to Rhodes Avenue Primary School before transferring to Fortismere School, where she earned her A-levels in 2008. She also worked at a variety of places, including a boutique, a fitness centre, and a hair salon.

Following a time of extensive travel, Glynne began working for a music management company in her late teens, where she made connections with songwriters and producers and finally spent four years perfecting her craft.I Cry When I Laugh, her first studio album, arrived at the top of the UK Albums Chart and witnessed the success of the singles “Hold My Hand” and “Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself” abroad.

The singles “I’ll Be There,” “These Days,” “All I Am,” “Thursday,” and “One Touch” from Glynne’s second studio album, Always in Between , also debuted at number one in the UK and enjoyed continued success.
