He currently co-hosts The Talk, voices Commander Jack Ransom on the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, and conducts a syndicated game of Pictionary on Fox stations. O’Connell was born in Manhattan, the eldest child of art educator Linda and British-born art director Michael O’Connell of an advertising agency.  His ancestry is split equally between Irish and Polish, Italian, and Polish. O’Connell was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland; his maternal grandmother came from County Cork, Ireland.  Charles S. Witkowski, the 34th mayor of Jersey City, New Jersey, was his maternal grandpa. O’Connell and his younger brother, actor Charlie O’Connell, were raised in Manhattan.

He attended the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan while he was a teenager. He studied film at New York University from 1991 to 1994 and graduated. He pursued screenwriting there, participated in fencing competitions, and even held the position of sabre team captain while there. His graduation was in 1995.  O’Connell started performing when he was a little child. He worked on advertisements for Duncan Hines cookies when he was younger.  He was cast in Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me as Vern Tessio shortly after turning eleven, giving him his first leading role. O’Connell made an appearance in a Frosted Flakes advertisement in 1987. He played the teenage hero who possesses superhuman qualities in the Canadian science-fiction sitcom My Secret Identity from 1988 to 1991.

Jerry co-starred with Jason Priestley and Gabriel Olds in the feature picture Calendar Girl while on summer break from NYU. In 1992, he also made an appearance alongside Jay Mohr and Hilary Swank in the short-lived ABC sitcom Camp Wilder. O’Connell went for the television pilot Sliders during his junior year. The show, which aired for three seasons on Fox and two seasons on the Syfy Channel, gave him the part of Quinn Mallory. During his fourth season, he was the producer and is credited with writing and directing a number of the episodes. Since then, O’Connell has starred in films including Jerry Maguire, Body Shots, Mission to Mars, Tomcats, Scream 2, and Kangaroo Jack, among others. O’Connell has also dabbled in scripting; in 1999, he sold his first script, for the movie First Daughter, to New Regency.

Davis Entertainment, a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, released the movie in 2004. O’Connell worked as the movie’s executive producer and was given the “story by” credit. Michael Keaton and Katie Holmes were the stars. O’Connell participated in the creation of the “Young Hillary Clinton” parody video, which mocked Hillary Clinton’s primary campaign in 2008.  O’Connell presided over VH1’s Pepsi Smash Super Bowl Bash on February 2, 2008, which aired the evening before Super Bowl XLII and featured musical guests Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5.  He made a guest appearance on Samantha Who? on ABC on April 28, 2008. Late in 2008, O’Connell co-starred with Niecy Nash in Fox’s Do Not Disturb, which was cancelled by the network after just three episodes.

O’Connell was engaged to actress Rebecca Romijn while he played Detective Woody Hoyt on the NBC crime thriller Crossing Jordan  until the show’s cancellation in May 2007. In the Ugly Betty episode “Derailed,” he and her shared a screen together. In several episodes of Las Vegas, he played Hoyt. He used a diaper in a faux commercial skit for the GoodNites bedwetting solution on Last Call with Carson Daly in 2004. He was caught on camera recording the skit, and The National Enquirer published a picture of him wearing diapers.

O’Connell appeared in a single episode of Justice League Unlimited’s animated season in 2005. He played Captain Marvel in the “Clash” episode. In the DC Universe Animated Original Movies short Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam, he played Captain Marvel once more opposite George Newbern, who played Superman after providing the voice for the animated series.

Charlie, Jerry’s younger brother, has made appearances in a number of plays in which his brother was a star, including Crossing Jordan and Sliders. O’Connell appeared in the ABC television series Carpoolers in 2007–2008, which aired from October 2, 2007, to March 4, 2008.
