Who is Jennifer Saunders?

Jennifer Saunders, an English actress, comedian, singer, and screenwriter, was born on July 6, 1958. Saunders gained notoriety when, along with her comedy partner and best friend Dawn French, she joined The Comic Strip in the 1980s after graduating from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She co-wrote and starred in French and Saunders, their self-titled sketch show, which they both received a BAFTA Fellowship for in 2009. In the 1990s, Saunders won praise for creating and portraying Edina Monsoon in her sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. On July 6, 1958, Jennifer Jane Saunders was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England.

Her father, Robert Thomas Saunders, was a pilot in the Royal Air Force, and her mother, Barbara Jane Saunders née Duminy, was a biology teacher who was born in France. He eventually rose to the position of group captain and went on to work for British Aerospace. Three brothers are hers. Saunders attended various schools throughout her childhood because her father was a member of the military. She attended boarding schools for her education from the age of five to 18 before enrolling in the west London independent school St Paul’s Girls’ School. Following graduation, she spent a year working as an au pair in Italy.

French and Saunders would eventually get recognition from the general public while participating in the informal comic group The Comic Strip in the early 1980s alternative comedy scene. They responded to an advertisement placed in The Stage newspaper in 1980 seeking female comics to appear at The Comic Strip, which had previously solely featured male comics.

They were informed right away when they entered the audition, “You’re scheduled. When may you begin?” They continued to be a part of The Comic Strip along with Robbie Coltrane, Rik Mayall, Peter Richardson, and Adrian Edmondson.  The first episode of The Comic Strip Presents: Five Go Mad In Dorset, which aired on November 2, 1982, was the group’s on-air debut on Channel 4.  Saunders portrays a trashy rock journalist on the road with the fictitious heavy metal band Bad News in the episodes “Bad News” and “More Bad News.”

With French, Tracey Ullman, and Ruby Wax, Saunders co-wrote and co-starred in the 1985 film Girls on Top, which featured four outlandish women living together in a London apartment. In the six-episode BBC situation comedy Happy Families, in which Saunders also made an appearance, she played several members of the same family, including the four Fuddle sisters. A little-known satire of glossy 1980s police dramas, The Supergrass from Comic Strip was directed by Peter Richardson and starred Saunders. In Strike, a Comic Strip parody of the 1984 miners’ strike, Saunders played Meryl Streep as Arthur Scargill’s wife. She was a guest on The Young Ones twice.

She and French produced the popular sketch comedy series French and Saunders for the BBC in 1987; it ran until 2007. The comedy programme had established itself by the end of the 1980s and was a mainstay of BBC television.  Along with Dawn French and other celebrities, Saunders participated in the 1989 live benefit performance of The Secret Policeman’s Biggest Ball for Amnesty International.

Saunders and French maintained their comic sketch show while pursuing separate occupations. Absolutely Fabulous has become Saunders’ most notable solo achievement. Actually, a fourteen-minute French & Saunders routine called “Modern Mother and Daughter” served as the foundation for a big portion of the comedy. French and Saunders were set to co-star in the comedy film, but just as the studio was reserved, French got the anxiously awaited call informing her that an adoption agency had a new baby for her to adopt.

The group developed a cult following while performing at the Boulevard Theatre, located above Soho’s Raymond Revuebar. Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, and Robin Williams were among the celebrities who once attended the performance. French had already started a career as a drama teacher by the time she and Saunders joined The Comic Strip, whereas Saunders was unemployed and spent the majority of her time in bed. Saunders was accepted into a drama teachers’ degree at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London in 1977, where she first met Dawn French, who would later become her comedy partner. Despite having grown up on the same base, shared a close friend, and come from RAF backgrounds, French and Saunders had never met.

At first, the comedy team did not get along, and Saunders thought French was a “cocky little upstart.” Saunders was viewed as snobbish and rigid by French, who shared Saunders’ mistrust. Saunders detested the idea of becoming a drama teacher and didn’t fully comprehend the course’s purpose, so she didn’t like French for being enthused and confident about it.  Saunders was surprised to learn that she was enrolled in a teacher-training programme because her mother had completed the application. When Saunders decided against applying to an Oxbridge university, her mother was upset.

Following their initial conflict in college, French and Saunders cohabited in a flat. Saunders’ messy habits have been brought up by French, who said: “She had a room up in the house when we shared a home in Chalk Farm. The police responded to our break-in by saying, “Well, it’s not great, but that room up top is the worst.” Naturally, no one had been inside.”

The two performed together after graduation, working the festival, cabaret, and stand-up circuits. They formed a double-act called The Menopause Sisters. Saunders described the act, which involved wearing tampons in their ears, as “cringeworthy.”  The manager of the club where they performed recalled, “They didn’t seem to give a damn. There was no star quality about them at all.”
