Who is Jennifer Lien?

Jennifer Lien, an American former actress who was born on August 24, 1974, is best known for portraying the alien Kes in the Star Trek: Voyager television series. Lien, the youngest of three children, was born in Illinois on August 24, 1974 and enrolled in the Illinois Theatre Center at the age of 13.  In a bubble gum commercial, Lien made his debut appearance on television while portraying twins. She made her debut on television in a 1990 episode of Brewster Place, which starred Oprah Winfrey, as a music academy student. In the same year, she lent her voice to the French horror movie Baby Blood’s English-language dub.

After being hired to play Hannah Moore in the soap opera Another World, Lien relocated to New York in 1991. While working on this series, she attended and graduated from the Professional Children’s School.  Lien stated in an interview from 1992: “I mentioned that I could play baseball while I was trying to secure an audition for a baseball movie a few years back. When I was growing up, we used to play a lot, often in the backyard. However, when I arrived at the audition, I was met by these testosterone-filled, Goliath-like women who could actually play. The two days of training and auditions were successful, but I felt like I had pulled every muscle in my body.

Lien was chosen to play Roanne in the Judith Light–starring sitcom Phenom in 1993. She also took part in the production of Adam Sandler’s comedy album They’re All Gonna Laugh At You, appearing as one of the daughters on the song “Oh, mom” and the valedictorian on the song “The Buffoon And The Valedictorian.”  Lien was chosen to play Kes in Star Trek: Voyager in 1994. She plays an Ocampan, a species that only exists in the Star Trek universe for eight to nine years, who joins the crew of the starship when it becomes stranded 70,000 light-years from Earth.

Phil Hwang, a writer and director, is Lien’s husband; their son Jonah was born on September 5, 2002.  When her son was born, Lien stopped doing voiceovers and acting, but she was listed as the executive producer of her husband’s 2008 movie Geek Mythology.  Lien stated in August 2010 that she planned to become a dietician after graduating.

In a 2000 interview, Lien stated that she enjoyed listening to all genres of music and that she had started playing the trombone in high school. She mentioned working with Camp 40 and supporting organisations that aid those suffering from AIDS, saying, “I want to be doing what I can for people who need it.” Lien was detained between 2015 and 2018 and accused with a number of offences, some of which were later dropped.

The court ultimately mandated that she receive mental health care.In the inaugural episode of The Critic the same year, Lien provided the voice for Valerie Fox.”The medical staff in Star Trek best embody the humane values embedded in this franchise,” wrote Richard Lutz. “The most notable of these is Kes, thanks in large part to Jennifer Lien whose remarkable performance brought to life a beautiful child-like being, whose short lifespan and humanity reminds us that the most important element in a life worth living is a loving connection with our fellow human beings.”

Due to unsolved personal concerns that had a negative impact on her performances, the showrunners regrettably terminated Lien’s contract as a primary cast member of Voyager. Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, a new character, took her place. Lien made a cameo appearance in season six’s “Fury” episode in 2000.

Following Voyager, Lien played Edward Norton’s younger sister in the film American History X. She acted as Sandy, Matthew Lillard’s character’s wild lover, in the 1998 film SLC Punk! She also provided the voice of Agent “L” for the first seven episodes of the 2000 season as well as the first three seasons  of Men in Black: The Animated Series.

Lien stated in an interview from 1992: “Because I felt quite uncomfortable where I lived, my upbringing was wild (the South Side of Chicago). If you didn’t fit in, you got your ass kicked; it was really industrial. I was simply being myself, and in order to live, I had to have a very thick skin. I seen several of my friends who used narcotics pass away.”

In Chicago when I was younger, I used to pretend to be someone else all the time. I was a tomgirl who wrote short plays and spent a lot of time hanging around with men. I’ve never been one for hanging around with women. When I was in the seventh year of junior high school, I joined the theatre club and discovered that I could fit right in, that I could unwind, and that I could do anything I wanted. I was usually creating plays, watching movies, or reading books.

I started to believe that I could influence people and make them happy. For a while, I believed that I had a small positive impact on the world. After taking acting classes and finding an agency, I followed the advise of my eighth-grade teacher. I made some theatre and commercials. I was soon hired by casting directors, and after that, I was invited to an interview with AW. I was requested to visit New York because they liked me, and so here I am.
