Who is Jennifer Hudson?

Jennifer Hudson, popularly referred to as J.Hud, is an American singer, actor, and talk show host. She was born on September 12, 1981. She has won numerous awards during her career for her contributions to theatre, film, television, and recorded music. Hudson became the second African-American woman and the youngest person to win the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony honours in the history of American entertainment. In 2013, she was also awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  She was listed by Time as one of the top 100 global influencers in 2020.

As a finalist on the third season of American Idol in 2004, Hudson gained notoriety after finishing seventh. Her role as Effie White in the musical Dreamgirls marked her acting debut, and for that role, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making history as the youngest African-American to do so in a field with so much stiff competition. Hudson’s self-titled first studio album, which was rated Gold in the US and the UK and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, was released in 2008 after she signed with Arista Records. On September 12, 1981, Hudson was born in Chicago, Illinois.

She is Darnell Donerson’s and Samuel Simpson’s third and youngest child.  She was born and raised in Englewood and attended Dunbar Vocational High School, where she received her diploma in 1999.  She names Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, and Aretha Franklin as her three main sources of inspiration.  Mariah Carey has also been named as one of her musical “heroes” by the speaker.  With the assistance of her deceased maternal grandmother Julia, she began performing when she was 7 years old by singing in the church choir and participating in community theatre.  She initially enrolled in Langston University, but she withdrew after a semester due to homesickness and dissatisfaction with the climate, and she then enrolled at Kennedy-King College.

In Atlanta, Hudson submitted an application for the third season of American Idol. Judge Randy Jackson remarked that she had been performing as one of the Muses from Hercules on Disney Cruise Lines  for the previous few months and said, “We’re expecting more than a cruise ship performance from you.”  After performing Elton John’s “Circle of Life” on April 6, 2004, Hudson garnered the most votes in the “Top 9,” but two weeks later, she was eliminated on the “Top 7” programme after singing Barry Manilow’s “Weekend in New England.”  MTV ranked Hudson as the sixth best competitor in American Idol history in May 2009 and said her elimination was the most unexpected ever.

The Los Angeles Times ranked Hudson third among all of the American Idol contestants in May 2010, behind season one winner Kelly Clarkson and season four winner Carrie Underwood. Hudson is featured in a duet on Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose, “The Future Ain’t What It Used to Be,” marking one of her earliest recordings. On Fox Chicago Morning News in September 2006, Hudson gave a live performance of the song “Over It.” Although she wasn’t yet signed to a record label at the time of the interview, she said the song will appear on her first album, which was scheduled to be released in early 2007.

Hudson and Arista Records agreed to a record agreement in November 2006.  Hudson also released a recording of “Stand Up,” a song that she co-wrote with Bill Grainer and Earl Powell and which was previewable on her fan page. Powell and Herman Little III, both from Chicago, produced the recording and also orchestrated the song.  Later, the power ballad would be included as a bonus track on Hudson’s self-titled album’s deluxe version.

Hudson was hired to play Effie White in the Dreamgirls movie adaption, which also starred Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, and Eddie Murphy, in November 2005. Hudson made her acting debut in the part. She defeated hundreds of seasoned actors and singers, including Fantasia Barrino, to land the part.  Dreamgirls began filming on January 9, 2006, and on December 25, 2006, it was released in limited release. On January 12, 2007, it was released nationwide.

The hallmark song for the character, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” which had previously been recorded and had already attained the status of a musical standard thanks to the unmistakable voice of Jennifer Holliday, has garnered special accolades for Hudson’s show-stopping onscreen interpretation. “Five mellifluous, molto vibrato minutes that have unexpectedly pushed Ms. Hudson… into the position of front-runner for the best supporting actress Oscar,” the New York Observer wrote of Hudson’s rendition of the song.

According to Newsweek, Hudson’s performance of the song “is going to cause goose bumps across the land” for moviegoers.  Hudson’s performance, according to Variety magazine, “reminds one of debuts like Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl or Bette Midler in The Rose, with a voice like the young Aretha,”  “Love You I Do” received the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media after being nominated for the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Hudson and Chicago-based independent record label Righteous Records inked her first recording deal in January 2002. She was freed from her five-year Righteous Records contract so that she could participate in the 2004 season of American Idol.I Remember Me and JHUD, Hudson’s subsequent studio albums, both peaked in the top ten of the Billboard 200, with the former also receiving US Gold certification.

She also appeared in the movies Sex and the City, The Secret Life of Bees, Winnie Mandela , Black Nativity, Sing, Cats, and Respect, as well as the television series Smash, Empire, and Confirmation. She also made her Broadway debut in the musical The Color Purple. From 2017 to 2019, Hudson served as a coach on both the UK and US editions of The Voice, where she made history by becoming the first female coach to take home the first prize.  She started presenting a talk show called The Jennifer Hudson Show in 2022.
