Who is Jenna Ushkowitz?

On April 28, 1986, Jenna Ushkowitz  was born. was born Min Ji is an American actor, singer, producer, and podcast host who was born in South Korea. She is well-known for her roles as Tina Cohen-Chang on the Fox comedy-drama series Glee and for her appearances in Broadway musicals including The King and I and Waitress. She has received two Tony Awards for her efforts as a producer of the Broadway productions of Once on This Island and The Inheritance. Ushkowitz, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, was adopted when he was three months old and was reared in East Meadow, New York.

Her father Brad worked in sales for the transportation business, and her mother Judi was a former secretary who now stays at home. Gregg is her older brother.  Her adoptive paternal grandpa was Jewish, and her immediate adoptive family is Catholic.  She went to Holy Trinity Diocesan High School, a Catholic institution in Hicksville, Long Island, after finishing elementary school at the Parkway School in East Meadow.  She started her career in print commercials as a young child with a promotion for Playskool’s Dress Me Up Ernie doll. She then appeared in a Toys R Us television commercial, three Burger King and Hess toy truck ads, and three Jell-O commercials with Bill Cosby at ages 3, 6, and 11. Ushkowitz made his television debut at age 3 on Sesame Street and other kid-friendly programs.

She made her Broadway debut in The King and I’s 1996 revival. Ushkowitz, then 13 years old, performed the American National Anthem before a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden.  In the 2008 Broadway production of Spring Awakening, Ushkowitz understudied the parts of Ilse, Anna, Martha, and Thea.  Ushkowitz was cast as Tina Cohen-Chang in 2009’s episode of Fox’s musical drama Glee. Ryan Murphy, the show’s creator, looked for actors who could relate to the thrill of playing leading roles in plays while casting Glee. He spent three months on Broadway before discovering Ushkowitz instead of using standard network casting calls.

When she first learned a little about Tina’s past, she thought the character’s stutter was genuine.  The songs “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper, “I Follow Rivers” by Lykke Li, “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion, “Gangnam Style” by PSY, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, “Hung Up” by Madonna, and “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry have all been performed by Ushkowitz as solos. The “True Colors” cover was praised by Raymund Flandez of The Wall Street Journal for displaying Ushkowitz’s “strong crystalline voice.”  In an article for the Los Angeles Times, Gerrick D. Kennedy stated that the “poignant” performance was one of his “feel-good, tearjerker moments.”

The song’s chart positions were number 47 on the Australian Singles Chart, number 38 on the Canadian Hot 100, number 15 on the Irish Singles Chart, number 35 on the UK Singles Chart, and number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100.  According to Rolling Stone reporter Erica Futterman, Tina’s rendition of “Because You Loved Me” “removes some of the Lite FM softness buried in the melody,” and it’s wonderful to see her “receive a song that complements her vocal powers.”

Ushkowitz and her Glee co-stars went on live concert tours in 2010 and 2011, including appearances in the United States, Canada, England, and Ireland. Ushkowitz played Gaga’s pal in a brief appearance in the 2011 music video for “Marry the Night” by Lady Gaga.  On May 14, 2013, Ushkowitz’s autobiography, Choosing Glee, was published. Ushkowitz’s character graduated and received admission to Brown University during Glee’s fifth season.

Ushkowitz was given the role of Jeannie Ryan in the Hollywood Bowl production of Hair in August 2014. The Kindred: The Foundation for Adoption was established to offer domestic and international adoptees, as well as their families, services like travel, translation, and support for those who wish to reunite. Ushkowitz was approached to start the organisation by fellow adoptee Samantha Futerman in 2014. Ushkowitz executive produced the documentary Twinsters in 2015 with the same motivation that inspired her to write Kindred.

The film depicts the connection between Samantha and Anas, identical twin sisters who were split up at birth. The movie had its world debut at South by Southwest 2015. She was chosen to play Julia Sullivan, the main role, in a special performance of The Wedding Singer at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera the same year. The play was originally scheduled to run for one week, but its run was extended due to the enthusiastic reception from audiences and critics.

Ushkowitz made multiple musical theatre appearances while in high school, including the first high school production of Les Misérables. Her other roles included Romaine Patterson in The Laramie Project, Inez in The Baker’s Wife, Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods, and Penny in Honk! Ushkowitz completed her high school education in 2004 and enrolled at Marymount Manhattan College, where she once more played Little Red Riding Hood in the musical Into the Woods.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts in theatrical arts from Marymount Manhattan in 2007 with a major in performance and a minor in musical theatre.
