Who is James Sutton?

James Cook, also known as James Sutton, is an English actor best known for his roles as Ryan Lamb in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale and John Paul McQueen in the Channel 4 serial opera Hollyoaks. The son of Jeanette and Donald Cook, Sutton was born James Cook on January 31, 1983 in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. His stage moniker, “Sutton,” was inspired by his hometown. He has two younger sisters and a younger brother.

He was raised at Haughton, Staffordshire, and went to Stafford’s King Edward VI School. He relocated to Newport, Shropshire, at the age of 14, where he attended the Burton Borough School.  After that, he continued his studies in drama at Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.  Prior to Hollyoaks, Sutton had parts in Lynda La Plante’s Trial and Retribution X as Barry Milne and the Dream Team spin-off Dream Team 80s as Terry Glover.  On October 12, 2012, Digital Spy posted an announcement about his comeback to Hollyoaks. On December 18, 2012, he returned to the programme.

He revealed on Twitter in May 2012 that he has founded Broken Leg Workshops, a firm that performs pop-up workshops for aspiring actors and provides guidance similar to what he wishes he had been given when he first started out in the industry. Liverpool hosted the inaugural workshop, which was followed by events in Manchester and Leeds. The Anfield Wrap introduced Sutton to playwright Ian Salmon, and as a result, Sutton performed in Salmon’s play Venus Rising at Liverpool’s Hope Street Theatre in 2018.

In episode two of the new show, Dominic McGregor and James Sutton, who plays John Paul McQueen, discuss Dominic’s struggle with alcoholism. The show’s producers contacted McGregor because of the similarities between his experience and that of John Paul. When it comes to planning events or team-building activities, especially with some founders, everyone immediately says, “Oh let’s get drunk together” or “let’s have our events focused on alcohol.”

His personal and professional lives started to fall apart as Social Chain continued to develop exponentially, and his unstable alcohol use led to a worsening in his mental health.”I was in a downward, vicious spiral where drinking and the things I did when intoxicated were beginning to really affect me and my life.

“I embarked on this voyage of self-destruction, killing my relationships, my life, and myself for alcohol. Alcohol was not viewed as an issue at the age of 22 because it is so pervasive in society. Going out and having massive blowouts is a really typical thing for people to do. It was the last thing I thought of, for myself. I never really gave it a thought until someone suggested that I give up drinking and start living a different kind of life.

“Everyone has experienced the situation where they wake up and wonder, “What did I do last night?,” as I discuss in great detail in the episode about the last time you drank. I should never drink again because I’ve angered people and done some horrible things. However, those feelings about what I did were real for me. I had hurt myself, my friends, and my family so terribly that I had to change.”

As a teenage co-founder of the rapidly expanding social media agency Social Chain in Manchester, McGregor rose to the top and told Prolific North that he quickly discovered how booze dominated the glam brunches and award ceremonies throughout the creative industry.

“You don’t truly know yourself until you’re 19 or 20 years old. At the same time that you’re trying to understand yourself, the world, and this thing called business, you’re also attempting to understand the world. When you add a supercharged fast-growing company on top of the first two—which are already challenging enough—something is bound to give eventually.

“I accepted that culture wholeheartedly. Because I believed it to be the only course of action, I was the one promoting that mentality in our office. I believed that was what businesspeople were expected to do.

He learned how “normalised” drinking was in addition to managing a challenging work environment. He also learned that many times, “people in the industry take it too far.”

He joined the Hollyoaks cast as John Paul McQueen in September 2006. His character started an affair with his best friend, Craig Dean, and came out as gay during this portrayal. Numerous prizes were nominated for and given to the plot. In September 2008, he ceased acting in the soap opera. As Eli Taylor, a character with narcolepsy and cataplexy, in the BBC drama Casualty’s episode “Doing the Right Thing,” which aired on December 13, 2008, Sutton played his first part after Hollyoaks.

The 23rd of March 2009 saw the announcement that Sutton would join the Emmerdale cast on ITV1. Sutton portrayed Ryan Daniel Lamb, a mechanic and the son of Mark Wylde, a well-known character, and newcomer Faye Lamb. Ryan made his debut on June 15, 2009. After around two years on the show, Sutton announced on February 8th, 2011, that she would be leaving. He left the programme on March 18, 2011. He had his final episode air on April 26, 2011.He performed the speech “If music is the food of love, play on” as Orsino from Twelfth Night for the BBC Learning initiative “Off By Heart Shakespeare” in 2011.

Together with Lacey Turner (EastEnders), Sutton made a brief appearance in the second season of Bedlam on Sky Living in the spring of 2012. His persona was an Andy, a paramedic.Sutton made two cameo cameos in episodes of Doctors on BBC1, in “Firestarter” on March 9, 2012, and “The Affair” on January 8, 2019. Additionally, he made cameo cameos in Holby City on BBC1 and the second season of the popular drama Scott & Bailey on ITV1, which premiered on Monday, March 12, 2012.
